Advice

Playing a witch for a Kingmaker campaign and wanted some advice on gear. I can kind of speculate but I know there might be better ideas for what I maybe had in mind. Heres the skinny:

No more than 4,000gp on weapons, 4,000gp on armor/shields, 4,000gp on other permanent magic items, 2,400gp on potions, scrolls, and other disposables, and keep 1,600gp in non-magical equipment, gems, and coins. There is a little wiggle room here. Also, if you havent figured it out the character level is 6.

Stats in case you need them:

Race: Elf
STR: 9
DEX: 17
CON: 14
INT: 20
WIS: 13
CHA: 14

How are witches by level 15? Whats some good ways to help with lack or armor at those levels? I saw some robes that I could maybe fashion as a dress of some sort. I will be taking mage armor and false life spells.

I would switch charisma and wisdom since wisdom affects saves. You suffer from arcane spell failure if you wear armor so I would not even bother with it. I would hold on to that 4000.

For the permanent magic items I would a rod of silent metamagic lesser, and a cloak of resistance.

I don't know who else is in the party so I would consider a wand of CLW for now. If you get dedicated caster I would not get one though. What scrolls and potions you get should depend on which spells you don't have.

I just read the line saying you can only keep 1600 in coins. In that case I would buy +1 light armor, and a master work shield, but don't wear it. Keep it on your donkey or horse, and just sell it later.

As for nonmagical equipment the only thing you have to have is a spell component pouch.

Witches are really good in Kingmaker. Sleep, and the Evil Eye hex are your friends. Most monsters will be hard pressed to make the saves.

Now that I think about it I would make dex have a base of 13(15 after racial modifiers), and put charisma and wisdom at 14 and 15.

I assume you have the Mage Armor spell. So you might want some magic item with deflection AC bonus that would stack.

Cloak of Resistance +1 is cheap and would help with saving throws.

Silver Crusade

Witches don't know bout my Armor Class.

There is a little wiggle room here

The "weapons" and "armor" categories are bit strained for a Witch, so I would suggest using some of that wiggle room here. If you can only get a tiny bit of wiggle:

* 2,000 plus change for a +1 Composite Longbow
* 2,000 plus change for a +1 Longsword
* 4,000 Bracers of Armor +2
If you can get a little more wiggle room on the weapons, I'd buy a Minor Metamagic Rod, Persistent, and stick with a masterwork bow and sword. Your spells really are your weapons.

"Other" actually covers all the stuff you want as a witch. There are some interesting choices available, but you can't go wrong with a Cloak of Resistance +2 for 4,000.

For your disposable items, I'd stick with wands for the most part. They're the easiest to use in combat, and the most cost effective. You can buy three first level wands for 2250, leaving 150 for a couple of backup scrolls or potions. I would probably choose:
* Cure Light Wounds
* Mage Armor
* Enlarge

Non-magical gear should won't add up very fast. You may want to consider a warhorse, Militia Veteran trait, and one rank in the Ride skill. Fighting and hexing from horseback isn't hard, and I have a feeling that Kingmaker will give you lots of travel opportunities.

Ask your GM what price you should pay for learning spells. Hopefully he'll let your shopping trip include paying people to teach you spells. If so, your starting spell list can get a cheap boost.

The group consists of a ranger1/cavalier5, traditional bard, dark tapestry oracle, and a rogue/monk I believe.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Anymore ideas out there?

Weapon: Lesser Persistent Rod, if your DM lets you get it for the listed price. This is the best item ever for a witch. I get so much use out of this on my witch, its not even funny.

Armor: Dont buy armor, split the difference from the above funds and get a wand of Mirror Image (you can UMD right?); this will do you better than AC in any fight where you have any time at all to prepare, other than that, I would avoid melee like the plague. Is this an option?

Permanent Magic Items for 4k: Either a headband of Intelligence (great offensive item, unless you're going to be pulling shenanigans with Threefold aspect), or a Cloak of Resistance is great.

Armor: +1 Adamantine Haramaki. DR 1/-, +2 AC permanent, virtually impossible to sunder. Total cost: 2153. No penalties for non-proficiency, no spell failure. Haramaki is from the Eastern Armors section of Ultimate Combat.

Weapons: What qualifies as a weapon for your GM? Can you weasel out a Rod or some Wands? There are a number of great 3k Lesser Metamagic Rods out there.

Other: This is where your budget is...ahem...bad. If you could soak the extra 1847 from the Armor budget over here, that'd be great, particularly if you can use that for a Ring of Protection. I keep a Pearl of Power 1, Haversack (this thing is important), Headband of Int, and a few other non-consumables around on my level 5 Witch.

Consumables: Wand of CLW, a couple scrolls of generally situational spells (these are cheap and you should always keep a few at hand), and maybe a potion or two of Bear's Endurance or Cat's Grace. Scrolls can wildly vary based on your particular build, especially with your choice of Patron.

Non-Magical: I keep a fair amount of sitting wealth in case of Familiar death. Other than that, a Light Crossbow (pref Masterwork) and/or a Long Spear are handy.

As said elsewhere, swap WIS and CHA, with the only possible exception being if you plan to somehow pick up the Eldritch Heritage feats (but why would you?). WIS is a much better investment. Your feats will likely be starved out with Extra Hex, which is, on most days, equivalent to 5 extra spell slots per day with specific effects per feat.

On that subject: are we talking a buffing Witch, a debuffing Witch, or a prima donna? Buffing got a substantial buff with the Scar Hex FAQ, which is the main reason I ask. Any way you set this up, though, is going to be fine, as long as you play smart.

I chose the time patron basically for silence, haste, and time stop should we get that high. I think my group has buffing down with the bard and my occasional haste for our ranger/cav and rogue/monk. Other than that Ill be using a lot of battlefield control and maybe some blasts.

UMD will always be maxed.

Sad to say, the only spell that really merits scrolls out of your Patron list is Haste at this point. Some of the later spells are good, but Silence and Ventriloquism aren't really worth the expense at this point. If you're willing and able to UMD other scrolls, I'm sure you can find plenty of non-Witch spells worth trying to cast.
