Interest Check - Mutants & Masterminds 3e - inFAMOUS

Recruitment

Hey Paizo people. I've been itching to do a super hero RPG for a while now, and I've been familiarizing myself with Mutants and Masterminds 3rd Edition over the last week or so. I'm not quite ready to start a campaign yet, but I thought that it would be a good idea to ask around and see if people would be interested in possibly playing in a super hero game. I'm sort of interested in running a game in the inFAMOUS setting, since it's an old favorite of mine that M&M reminded me of, but I'm still playing around with exact concepts.

Give me your thoughts and show interest if that sounds like something you'd enjoy.

Sounds like fun -- enjoyed inFamous, but haven't played M&M in *years*, and only first Ed.

inFAMOUS was a super fun setting and I am intrigued on what your time setting will be for it. Is it after Second Son? Before? Does it ignore the character stories entirely?

I'd be down for some super-hero shenanigans for certain. I played 2nd edition M&M but not 3rd yet.

Been looking for an excuse to get into superheroics, and M&M more specifically, for ages, and I have some familiarity with InFamous too so this is ticking a lot of boxes for me. Heck yeah, I'd be up for this.

Hooray, I can actually post again!

To answer KingHotTrash's question, my current thought is that I've set up a somewhat alternate ending to Infamous 2 and the game would take place a few years later. So Second Son wouldn't have occurred and likely wouldn't occur outright.

The short summary is that Cole and company were able to find a way to treat the plague without needing to kill all Conduits and the Beast destroyed itself to create a massive blast that started activating Conduits all around the world. That should provide plenty of opportunity for players to make characters and have a reason for them to have powers if they so choose. The current setting idea is a fictional city on the West Coast loosely based on places like LA and San Fran, in the same style as Empire City and New Marais being knock-offs of real famous cities.

I'm 200% down for this.

Sounds awesome.

I imagine, if we're conduits, we should be keeping with a general theme to our powers, lean into alternate effects, and grab energy absorption -- though given some of the mechanical stuff, a normie in a battlesuit would also fit in.

I only ever played the first game, but this sounds fun. I am always interested in playing a superhero game

ok, now that I can post... count me in.

I'm glad that like a week of downtime didn't kill people's interest in this idea. It did give me time to jot down a couple of paragraphs of setting summary to give a general idea of what kind of city I'm thinking. I would like to work with the players to work out specific locations and setting details to tie people into the city when things get started.

El Destino:
El Destino began as a single settlement constructed on a small island just off the western coast of the American Continent. Dubbed La Isla del Destino, or the Island of Destiny, twelve missionaries choose the large, fertile costal island to house a mission where they could live in safety and spread their faith to the local population. Construction began in 1774, and continued late into the year. A single stone bridge connected the island to the mainland, built over the small strait where the Pacific lapped against the shores. Over the next several years, explorers and visitors from other nearby missions began to construct a waystation on the far side of the bridge and eventually other Spanish settlers and converted locals began to build on the island itself, expanding the settlement until a thriving town spread out on both sides of the channel. The missionaries preached messages of tolerance and acceptance, focusing on doing good for the locals and spreading their faith through peace and good intentions rather than trying to convert the local population through force. Non-believers and lay folk were welcomed so long as they followed the tenants of acceptance laid down by the missionaries who owned the land and the common folk thrived on fishing, quarrying the good stone of the region, and farming and ranching in the nearby fields and valleys. By 1780, El Destino had become one of the most successful towns on the western coast.

The town grew consistently over the years, with the small harbor expanding into a major trade port as westward expansion caused the population and wealth on the western coast to swell exponentially over the years. The city saw some troubled times during the 19th century, mainly due to the swings in power between the Spanish, Mexicans, and Americans, but it never truly fell on hard times. The old teachings of the mission were never quite forgotten, even when the building was finally condemned in the late 1800s and replaced with a large stone cathedral that still stands to this day. The people have always been open-minded, at least compared to many of their neighbors, and the city is well known for its large port, wonderful island beaches, and welcoming attitude. The generally friendly locals make it a prime vacation spot, rivaling Los Angeles and San Francisco as the most visited destination by tourists on the West Coast.

However, the people’s open minds were put to the test after the Empire Event and the Marais Blast. The superhuman population of El Destino spiked higher than any other city in America within weeks. The police force was pushed to the limit trying to keep order with the sudden appearance of dozens of people with strange powers and the government took months to send aid to any cities outside the disaster zone along the East Coast. Citizens rallied both for the Conduits and against them as the super humans adjusted to their new powers. Eventually, the fledging Conduit Rights Association set up their West Coast headquarters within the city limits, but that did little to calm tempers. Even after two years, the people are still divided on the treatment and impact of Conduits. Just as many super criminals have made a name for themselves as hometown heroes and the entire nation is struggling to adapt to the new world, even with the formation of SCAR and the government’s firm hand taken against Conduit criminals.

I like the concept -- think we can work within that -- I assume there's some sort of arrangement between the government and the CRA - to keep the military out? Or will there be a (quasi) military faction present (like in Second Son)?

That sounds excellent. I like the setting and the idea. Now I need to get my hands on the rule book for it.

Seems like a well-thought-out setting! The Energy Controller archetype looks to be the logical choice here, but I'd like to see some other concepts that play with different ideas of Conduits.

I was kind of thinking that -- with Second Son introducing things like Neon, Smoke -- could make fun conduits with totally different aspects that aren't energy types.

Thank you for all of the interest!

I'm not quite ready to start a new game quite yet, and I have a couple of systems I'm interested in, but it's extremely helpful to know that there are people who would be interested in M&M. I would definitely like to run this game idea, so it will be on the short list of stuff to work on. Thanks!

Paizo bouncing up and down like a rabbit on crack has stopped me from replying until now, but I'm interested. o wo/

I am very interested! I love that setting. Only played Second Son, but watched LPs of the others.

I'd need to know build rules before solidifying an idea, but at the moment, I'm thinking of something... sparkly. XD Probably using an existing set of powers as a thematic base, since an inFAMOUS-themed game feels like it would be MUCH truer to its origin that way.

EDIT: Wait, I have an idea. 8D Gonna start tinkering at PL 10 for now, and adjust later if need be. Mostly to organize my thoughts. XD

I'm definitely interested! I haven't played the inFamous games, but I can do some research.

...So, I may have gotten a little excited and stayed up late to finish building my character. XD At the moment, they're the Conduit of Flesh - and recognizing the way this can make them appear, they also work for the Conduit Rights Association and try hard to maintain a good public image.

This seems pretty awesome- I haven't played nor seen inFAMOUS 1 or 2, but really enjoyed Second Son. Might do some looking into the first two, but for now I'd like to say I'm definitely interested!

While I'm certainly not going to tell people to stop theorizing about characters, I should make sure that I'm clear. I'm not starting recruitment right now, and probably not for some time. I have other campaigns I'm also interested in looking into and I'll probably have another interest check up to summarize the other games I'm interested in and get opinions on what people are interested in.

Makes sense. XD Personally, I just hit on a nugget of inspiration - I'll be keeping an eye out for any full recruitments.

dotting.

Dark Archive

Ooh, ooh! Mr. Kotter! Ooh ooh! Pick me!

I'm not familiar with the setting, but neither am I choosy about such. I would love to be a part of this!

I'm also playing around with the idea of running a more standard superhero game, not necessarily using the Infamous universe. So if you're just interested in general superheroes, that's also possibly on the table.

Well, my idea would be fairly easy to convert to another setting. ^^ They definitely work best as part of a pro-super organization, though. Depending on the exact setting, I might work on another concept instead.

Count me as interested in that as well. I love superhero RP in general. Plus, Mutants & Masterminds is far too hard to find a game for, I've been wanting to try it out for years. (I only ever played second edition.)

My only preference is we don't go as campy as Batman 66, or as dark as Watchmen. (I'm fine with some funny and silly — my favourite comic of all time is Impulse — I'm just not a fan of the 'holy mashed potatoes' level of silliness.) Anything between those extremes, and I'm on board. :-)

I'd be interested as well. I'm an old hand at M&M, and it tends to be fun in any setting. I love super heroes in pretty much any system, and Infamous has a strong following.

If you do start recruitment, it would be great if you could post an update here as well so we all know when to start working on submissions, and to make sure we dont miss it.

Agreed. I'm watching the RSS of this post now to keep an eye out for such an announcement. :-) I'm guessing it would be after the recruiting for the other game is over, at the very least.

Yeah. I have a much better idea of what I wanted to do for an Iron Kingdoms game than M&M so I decided to do that recruitment first and spend the time to make sure I had exactly what I wanted to do down so I had a quality M&M game to run. I'm still not sure if I want to do Infamous or a custom setting though, so I'm still playing with ideas.

I’m not familiar with inFamous, but I would be game for any M&M game. :)

I also don't really know inFAMOUS, but I love M&M 3e.

What kind of power level heroes/villains does this imply? Street level minor powers like season 1 of Heroes? Mid level powers like most of the X-Men or the lower level Justice Leaguers? Or nigh-gods like Superman, Silver Surfer, and Spawn?

inFAMOUS generally has "rocket launcher with lots of ammo" levels of power. Like, you can blast a gathering of enemies, but you're not picking up buildings and hurling them at people. You may be fast enough to dash down a couple of blocks, but you're not going to circle the world twenty times in the blink of an eye.

Just stumbled onto this and it definitely has my interest piqued; I haven't played inFamous but the setting stuff above all sounds awesome.
