rounding: up or down (pick one pls)

General Discussion

ok back of the book(299):
Rounding
You’ll often need to calculate a fraction of a value—most often halving damage or calculating a fraction of a cost when crafting. Always round down when you halve or create a fraction or percentage of something. For example, if a spell deals 7 damage and someone takes half damage from it, they would take 3 damage.

EXAMPLE:
Poison Antidote
...this specific antidote attempts to counteract that poison or venom using a counteract level equal to half your level rounded up.

Could we just have one rounding rule for everything? It is odd to look up rounding in the index and then find a bunch of things that don't follow the explanation. I understand the rounding rule is basically saying "unless otherwise noted round down" but it's much easier to remember "always round down"

I noticed this as well. There are a lot of rules that specifically call out rounding up or rounding down individually. While it's nice to have numbers go in the player's favor from time to time, I'm not sure why this needed to be changed from the consistent rule that we had.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Specific always overrides general. So normally you round down, but specific abilities and feats can override this.

Silver Crusade

Half your level rounded up is equivalent to a casters spell level.

The rounded up values usually apply to cases concerning taking half of a characters level. In those cases, you generally need to start at one and thus have to round up or specify minimum one. The other reason rounding up is nice is because of spell levels, as pauljathome mentioned.

Rounding down goes for everything else.
