Think Tank / Interest Check Thing: Wrath of the Demons (or an all eidolon campaign of some sort?)

Recruitment

So, I've been kicking around ideas of a unique campaign idea, and one idea that struck me was "What about a game like Wrath of the Righteous, but all the PCs were redeemed demons? Re-demon-tion? Redeem-ons?" And while at first, I was thinking folks could just grab demons and add class templates as appropriate, but that leaves a lot of differences in powers, even with class levels, and probably would trample through initial scenarios.

And then I recalled that unchained eidolons get a demon subtype, so I thought "Oh! Maybe everyone just plays an eidolon with that and builds from there!" And because I can't turn my brain off like a normal person, it branched off into other campaigns where everyone is eidolons and what they would be like.

But to bring it back to my original idea... does that pique anyone else's interest? An all eidolon campaign, like "Wrath of the Righteous, but everyone is a demon"? Do any other campaigns stick out as possible themes for a group of PCs who all decide to be eidolons for some reason? This isn't a recruitment or anything, I know I lack the skill to be a DM of any capacity, but I liked this idea, so I thought I would toss it out and see if anyone else even shared an interest in the idea.

I always thought it might be interesting to play Devils who go through Wrath, as they would have motivation to battle demons and some of the boxed text would be hilarious.

I’d love to play with a Shadow-plane based eidolon hehe! I miss the one I built years ago before all the unchained changes.

That is actually a cool idea. I can't GM, since I am working on a huge planar game with multiple GMs and playgroups, but I would definitely be cool with joining such a game if someone steps forward to run it.

Yes. :D

This can be potentially really interesting...Atleast with the idea of a Eidolon build everyone has the same starting location where as your idea of demons would make things pretty one-sided, especially against casters as most demons don't gel well with magic user classes.

But going down the Eidolon path is certainly a interesting one. Let me know if you decide to do it.

I've actually considered doing a 'summoned monsters' campaign, where the party are essentially eidolons who adventure on their home plane and then are sometimes randomly whisked to the Material Plane to serve their summoners... only to find the two plot lines converging...

So yeah, I'm curious to see if this goes anywhere. :D

Shadow Lodge

Eldions are weaker than standard characters (for the same reason a fighter is stronger than an animal companion)

It could also be done with the race point system (with a good dose of GM oversight) of course. We set an RP value and everybody builds to it. As we go up, we could get additional RP

I believe that if we use the eidolon build rules of the Unchained Summoner as the base for the race - and then assign a class - we should be more than fine, with no reason for touching the balancing mess of the race building rules. With 4 to 6 players this group could do any AP around, even WotR.

It brings up the question of how this messes with the campaign traits.

Personally I'd be very interested in this. Eidolan's have some very fun/interesting builds, and making them the focus would be an interesting change of pace.

Hi! I'm really interested, though some questions come to my mind. Would there be classes, or just evolutions when leveling up? How would Mythic rules mess with this? Would there be Masters (i.e. Summoners) around? With this I mean if the PCs would be real eidolons or that is just a way to mechanically represent whatever they are.

I'd be totally up for playing an eidolon.

Totally up for playing a redeemed Demon!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I found someone who may be willing to run this! It's not quite 'redeem-ons' in terms of theme, but it will allow PCs to play as Eidolons. Here are some of the big bullet point concepts that were thrown around in the discussion. Let me know whether to give the green light for the prospective GM to post or not, as he doesn't check Paizo much, but is on the Pathfinder Reddit Discord a lot.

Artificial Eidolons: The PCs are not full-on outsiders. They are, instead, mortal beings who either volunteered or were forced into undergoing a super soldier program akin to SOLDIER from FF7.

All PCs have their Eidolon Form and their original form, effectively being able to switch as per Alternate Form. PCs will obviously have the (Native) subtype instead of (Extraplanar). If a PC is knocked to 0 HP or less while in Eidolon Form, they revert back to their mortal form and cannot assume their Eidolon form until they gain 8 hours rest.

I am not 100% certain if this will be implemented, but it was suggested that Evolution lists from both regular and Unchained versions of Eidolons will be smashed together, with conflicting point costs being ruled on a case-by-case basis.

Setting: Magitech setting akin to classic JRPG games such as Playstation One-era Final Fantasy. There will apparently even be enough tech level where vehicles are a thing, as one of the things discussed was PCs being dropped off in some areas by a helicopter. The world was described as "What would happen if you took a typical fantasy world and and had a realistic timeline for technological and societal development."

There was also apparently a war with dragons in the ancient past and some areas in the setting are still tainted by the dragons undying souls, becoming 'dragonblighted'. The few dragons still alive in the setting hide in the wild places of the world, with many having devolved into Linnorms. What's even more intriguing is that some of the most powerful dragons, lost in powerful emotions at the time of their death, can form new bodies out of raw elemental power, becoming Wrack Dragons. As a Scarred Lands fan, I know of those dragons in question and rather like that concept.

Last but not least, instead of nuclear energy being used in the setting, mana drawn straight from leylines is the replacement. Interestingly enough, it was also mentioned that said mana was used in the super soldier program and that agents now require periodic 'submersions' into raw mana in order to keep their minds and bodies functional.

The Campaign: I was not told much about this, but I was told that it would begin as a pretty typical 'soldier campaign' and end up going off the the rails into JRPG, 'let's save the world from the BBEG' territory. The only thing discussed was the first mission featuring a 'meet'n'greet prologue' before having PCs deploy. I know that the GM doesn't want the game to just be endless combat and wants some deep plot development, both on his and the PCs ends.

Hell yeah.

Was the conversation voice or text (and which channel)? I'm curious to look it over.

Interesting idea... not sure how interested I'd be, but I might be. Depends a lot on details.

i'm still interested! Magitek me away!

Would we have class levels? If so can I play a machinesmith? (If not alchemist works)

I've always wanted to try the idea behind Nightbane or Cthulhutech's Tagers in a better system

Oh hell yeah! This sounds amazing! There's a lot of play with evolutions that could lead to interesting character designs, like a six armed six shooter or other zany ideas.

I'm with Tripgnosis, this sounds like the perfect chance to try playing a Tager in a system people actually play
