Playtest art question

Will the playtest have art in it? I seem to remember the previous Beta had some. I'm a big fan of Wayne Reynolds art, so I hope to see his work inside. In particular, I'm loving the concept work posted on the blog. Will this be used in the book?

They've mentioned there will be art, some will be b&w/"unfinished" pieces.

If you're a fan of Wayne Reynold's art, I hope you also caught that he's been working on art for the new edition for quite some time now, 2 years if I recall correctly. I'm also looking forward to seeing new works from him.

Nice! Has he talked about this anywhere?

I did not know that. I follow him on Instagram and FB. Got to meet him twice at cons and got him to sign his Art of War book.

Not that I'm aware of. I'm taking this information from the early announcement and FAQ. "We're proud to announce that Wayne Reynolds has been designing new concepts and characters for Pathfinder Second Edition for more than two years now, including updated art for the iconic characters from the Core Rulebook, detailed illustrations of all the key player races, and more (including a new goblin iconic!)."

He also mentions working on this project for years on his FB page. I'm looking forward to seeing what he's created.

I imagine one way they might do it to help encourage people to buy the final release in addition to the playtest book is have black and white art in the playtest, and full color art in the final release.

Thanks Everyone.

I'm pleased to confirm that I've been working closely with the Paizo design team (Bouncing ideas off each other) for the past couple of years on creating visuals for the second version of Pathfinder.

I can't go into too much specific detail at this point.
However, The sketches that you're seeing are the world-building concept images for the new version of Pathfinder.
One of the visual aspects we wanted to address was to define the in-game ancestries and culture to a point where their appearance and equipment makes them instantly recognisable as a Pathfinder - specific visuals.
For example; The differences between a Pathfinder Halfling and a Pathfinder Gnome.
The viewer should now be able to identify which ancestry the character or item is from at a glance.
There are lots of sketches as we've been going into quite a lot of detail. At some point they may end up being colour pieces.

In addition, I've been working on design notes for each of the Iconics. The design notes will describe the inspirations and creative process behind the visuals of the characters. Including details and origins of their equipment.

I hope the new images will be (mostly) met with approval. It's been the kind of project I've been waiting for a large chunk of my career to work on.

Being distinctively "Pathfinder" at a glance visually is exactly what I've been hoping for. ESPECIALLY with monsters. I want to see many more of the monsters get a distinctive look like we saw with the goblin. I want dragons to look different from WotC dragons, I want to see hobgoblins and orcs and gnoll that are distinctive from other settings at a glance, I want demons / devils / etc that are totally different.

I think they already have this to a good degree. But yeah, it is a good thing and should be extended. I totally dig big-headed Paizo goblins and Paizo trolls are much much better looking at those long-nosed, triangle-faced trolls from old school D&D. Of course a large part of what defines the Pathfinder look is Wayne Reynolds art. So it's great to hear he's been working on this for years now and giving a lot of thought to having a distinct look.

Another thing I like about the 'Pathfinder Look' is that it ties into the flavor and setting. So big-headed goblins are distinct from the old school ones in culture and feel (definitely seems inspired heavily by Gremlins, which is a positive in my mind). And the gnomes with colorful hair and Eyebrows of Doom helps make them both distinct from other small people like Halflings but also ties into their Fey history and desire for stimulation, shades of brown is just too limiting for them.

Glad you like the Pathfinder goblins. :)

The inspiration for their big heads with big mouths actually came from an oval bath sponge!
Inspiration sometimes comes from the most unexpected places...

My rule of thumb. If it has normal looking hair, it's a halfling

Wayne - talk to Paizo about collating the sketchbook materials into a... sketchbook of Golarionica - a visual guide to the natural history, lore and artifacts of ancestries and aide memoire for beasties and baddies. I'm sure then pick of the crop and what is needed to fully encompass the setting will be in the CRB, but this could be something extra that would be really, really useful for tables/groups to fully-realise Golarion.

I would love that, especially if there's lots of notes and commentary along with the art.

Unfortunate it's to my understanding that art books sadly haven't sold well for Paizo (I'd love to be wrong on that).

Sponge-Gob Roundhead?

I was actually thinking more about their personality and culture being inspired by Gremlins. Their look is very different, but fits with the personality. Having your goblin art in the first AP module really helped set the 'Pathfinder Look' while the new culture and such helped set the 'Pathfinder Feel.' Both of which are really cool, and compliment each other well. Keep up the good work!
