Pyrausta familiar?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

so what exactly is a Pyrausta dragon good at? i really like the flavor of them very much, but not sure want i would use one for. scouting?
delivering touch spells? pet? though they get pretty good stats if you could convince your GM to make it a elder Pyrausta to add the giant and advance simple templates which bumps it from 1/4 CR to 2 1/4 CR (more then psudodragon but less then a tidepool dragon.) thoughts?

Thought you meant pyrausta the beetle from Battlemage the Summoner series
Pyrausta elder Looks good because of it's self thinking capabilities and it's CHA if 17 if you could convince your Gm to let you get it at the same level as a pseudodragon
If you can't I would probably say scouting however IMO it's not worth the feat other creatures can do scouting as well

I have a backup character with a Pyrausta. He just likes the flavor. It's really just a placeholder until he gets to a level where he can swap it out for a Pseudo-dragon. Don't go poking his campfire, that's where it likes to hang out. They're not a bad scout, but they're not very durable and don't have much in the way of offense.

The standard pyrausta is diminutive with a decent fly speed and stealth. So scouting is a pretty good role for it to play.

It could dart in and deliver a touch spell, but take care as it's not a great "combat" familiar (no regen, invisibility, etc).

When I designed the pyrausta, the only reason I didn't list them as familiars then was that despite my fondness for the cute little guys, they didn't really seem like they could compete with the other options. They've since been added in, but they remain a bit weak compared to other improved familiars; you could maybe take away the fast healing and pinky swear not to use magic items / gear like an improved familiar might with its little dragon hands and then try to see if it could be a regular familiar.

Elder Pyrausta does seem balanced as a 7th level familiar.

With Improved Familiars the special abilities tend to be more important than the CR. Without something like constant Detect Evil or At-Will Invisibility or truespeech it's not going to overshadow top choices like Imps or Lyrakien (Cha 20!). And the pseudodragon's Blindsense and Telepathy still make them competitive with the Elder Pyrausta. Remember that Pyrausta familiars lose fast healing.

I think if I had a player who wanted one I'd tell them to take a normal Pyrausta with Improved Familiar at 3rd level and age it to an Elder at 7th.

A small sized magical child vigilante archetype character, a liberal reading of the rules, and a mauler pyrausta is the combination needed for a low level dragon rider.

sorry to necro my thread, but don't Pyrausta already lose fast healing when they become a familiar?

That looks awful since other Improved Familairs have regeneration.
