Yes she would be a PERFECT submission for the ALL BARD Council of Thieves AP. ;-)

Right?

RECRUITMENT IS OFFICIALLY REOPENED for VAMPIRE the Dark Ages Venice by Night

I have an opening for a player interested in playing a member of Clan VENTRUE.

Please post a concept but do not submit a character as I will not ask anyone to build until I have selected the candidate for the slot. Thank you.

The game is set in Venice in the Year of Our Lord 1309.

While the rest of the Italian City States are ruled by autocratic despots Venice is still an Oligarchy. Currently Doge Pietro Gradenigo and the members of the Great Council guide the city though this turbulent time period. Recent changes to the law have much of the citizens still grumbling about the dangerous turn the city has taken, through deft political maneuvering the Doge has closed the Council to those who have either already sat on the council or who can prove that relatives were on the council in the past. Though there are still plum positions to be sought by those who are not “included” much of the citizenry has been closed off from having an effective voice in the administration of the city.

Current Noble Families: Dandolo (supporters of the Doge), Gradenigo, Soranzos, Querini, Tiepolo, (last two opponents of the Doge), Ca’Grande.

There are people from all walks of life and all cultures in Venice at this time, merchants and skilled laborers hold great prominence in the city not just the Venetian “nobility”.

Traditionally the East was the concern of Venice. Her founding fathers were as much Byzantine Greek as they were Latin. In fact Venice’s Doge was one of the architects of the fall of the Byzantine Empire over 100 years ago. Since that time though, the Latin Kingdom of Constantinople (never much more than the city and its walls) fell to the Palaeologus line which has revived the Byzantine Empire. Relations between that Emperor and the hated Genoans was long established which weakened Venetian Black Sea trading interests. However, the most serious blow came over 15 years ago when the Mameluke Sultan of Egypt swept away the last of the Crusader states in the Outremer. Though the Venetians immediately opened relations with the Sultan their position which was once one of strength has been diminished by unstable relations with an infidel.

As her Mediterranean power has been checked, her power on land has grown. Venetian mercenaries who unlike the mercenaries of the other Italian city states, are from the lagoon itself owing more loyalty than deep pockets to the Venetian cause. This however changed just over a year ago when Marquis Azzo VII of Este died at Ferrara leaving no legitimate offspring. It would appear that one of Azzo’s two brothers had a claim to the seat of power in Ferrara. Before his death Azzo had named his grandson Folco, from an illegitimate son, to be his heir in his will. The brothers were furious and Folco’s father Fosco appealed to Venice for help.

Naturally Venice was all too eager to aid Fosco’s son retain the title and dispatched a military force to prop up the young heir. The Pope though had no intention of seeing Venice gain such a prize and resurrected the papal claim of Suzerainty over the city declaring in favor of the brothers. Doge Gradenigo refused to yield and did not withdraw Venetian troops when ordered to do so by the Pope. After all, Venice had long been outside of the direct influence of the Pope’s influence. Appeals by the Doge fell on deaf ears and Pope Clement threatened to excommunication and interdict on the Republic, its Doge, his councilors and captains and all those who gave advice against the wishes of the Holy See.

Naturally such a threat was poorly received by the Doge who refused to secede to the wishes of the Pope. A delegation was sent to try a diplomatic solution but was rebuked. It is now February of 1309 and the streets and canals of Venice have become a dangerous place. The Great Council debates over the pending excommunication with the enemies of the Doge as well as his supporters out on the streets calling for the support of the people and in many instances coming to blows.

Perhaps your modern sensibility causes you to ask what is the big deal? The Pope excommunicates people and no one bats an eyelash. However, in the days of the Middle Ages such an interdiction if released in a Bull by the Pope held great weight. The people of Venice would be at the mercy of the rest of the Christian world anyone could enslave them or confiscate their goods at any time with no fear of reprisal. All commercial treaties with Christian neighbors would be annulled, all trade and traffic suspended and enemies would be allowed to freely blockade the city with no fear of reprisal. Worse yet the mass could not be performed in the city and any clergy were bound to leave the city within 10 days of the decree. This is a serious penalty indeed should the Great Council and the Doge fail to find common ground with the Pope.

Other Current Events:

Marco Polo a Venetian led the way decades ago to opening the Silk Road to the west. 1277-1295.
The Mongol Empire is at the apex of its power in the mid and far east.
The Reconquista has pushed the Moors almost entirely out of Spain.
The Sultanate of Iconium in the middle east is at its apex.
The Pope moves the seat of the papacy from Rome to Avignon.
William Wallace is captured and beheaded in London.
King Phillip the Fair expels the Jews from France.
King Phillip the Fair arrests Knights Templars in France for heresy.
The church turns its attention from Crusades in far off lands to Crusades against heresy in the west.
Edward the II crowned King of England.
Robert the Bruce is crowned King of Scotland.
The new Holy Roman Emperor Henry VII is crowned.
Teutonic Knights move their headquarters to Prussia.

If any of this interests you, feel free to somehow tie it into your background.

No, this game does not follow traditional Vampire canon though you will see some familiar NPC's if you have knowledge of the setting.

Mmmmmm
I once played a Toreador in Dark Ages.
Might be interested...

I'm thinking of a pre-Renaissance character, somebody that was part of an affluent family. Leaning towards a character that had many diverse interests but trained courtesans as companions of the elite. Instead of only accruing financial wealth, he also made sure all of his protégées were loyal to him. They would bring him secrets, carelessly spilled during pillow talk, and he would use those secrets to grow powerful.

Surely the Ventrue would value such a man...

I am interested...just want to make as this would be my first play by post game...you want the concepts posted here?

Yes please ;-)

Indeed they would! :-0

I will give it 5 more days to see if anyone comes up with any further interest on this. So my decision will come down on Friday night.

Okay here is my concept...

Veronica in the last five years has become a very popular courtesan in the city of Venice. She possess a dangerous beauty and a sharp mind. The city elite pay a high price for a night with her...as much as for her insightful conversation as her skills in the bedroom. She immensely enjoys the wealth and the special privileges courtesan had over the normal woman...like learning how to read...and she became a skilled Fencer as well. Her other quality is she is very discreet about her client.

Though there is a 'ugly' rumor that she secretly takes female noble clients...though she denies these rumors as lies spread by her competion.

I don't know if the Ventures would recruit a woman like this...buthe I think such a character would be fun to play in a political type game.

Going back to read ElegantlyWasted concept...I kinda wished both character could make it in...as I think we would be enemies...or at least rivals...and in political games those are fun.

I am considering it for the same reason actually.

I have a PC who simply does not post with enough frequency and has not for a while. I'll not say what Clan yet.

Hey, back off my courtesan trade :p
Or I'll fight you!

Thinking if I got in the character wouldn't be terribly physically potent, though. Been a while since I've done White Wolf and gone more the mental/social route.

Recruitment fir VAMPIRE CLOSED

Based on the concepts as presented EW and JK you are both in and will start as Mortals who are familiar with one another!

I'll PM the creation rules to you both later.

Cool deal.

I approve of this message.

Witchguard ranger in coming :)

JDPhipps here, chiming in to say I'm gonna build a Hexcrafter Magus using this alias. Before I start building, would you allow me to build a Magus who wields a two-handed weapon and still use Spell Combat? Technically speaking it seems like you can use it with a one-handed weapon being wielded two-handed (at least, according to RAW), so I was just curious. I think I'll go for a Strength-based Magus and wield a big axe or something of the sort. I'm gonna take the Cabalist archetype as well and get a useful Bloodline for him too.

Also, for the sake of others, would the Hexenhammer Inquisitor be allowed for the same reason the Hexcrafter Magus is?

Okay! I believe Frjya's crunch is done. The backstory will change as Kamenhero25 and I settle into the joint backstory but till then, I give you Fryja Elvanna. Youngest daughter of Queen Elvanna, 14th Queen and Irrisen and daughter of Baba Yaga.

Dotting for Witch Killer Slayer archetype. Still working on the specifics.

This might be a dumb question, but I wanna ask it anyways:

In regards to 3pp material, if it's an archetype of the Witch, is it auto allowed?(Baring you not allowing it for other reasons Shadow)

Yup, the base class is still a Witch.

Next stupid question

Can you play a non-archetype witch?

This is a tentative build for my Witchguard. Still need to work out backstory and confirm one or two things with Timekeeper to make sure our idea works out.

Let's go for a hat trick :)

As someone asked, can we play the hexcrafter? Because I had an idea to get the wail hex from rogue genius games, dress in black robes and maybe take leadership to get a Wyvern mount. Or is that too similar to something? :)

@Monkeygod: Want to form a vampire Clan? The Tyranny of the Sun is setting, our kinsmen grow hungry.

Yes :-)

I'll allow the hexcrafter as it's witchy themed if not witchy named.

Let me think about the first two handed wielder question.

OK for HexCrafter Inquisitor. The scope of classes is fairly limited here so a few exceptions will allow for more diverse submissions.

Yes, Nazgul witchy character here I come.

Just don't trust NPCs bearing Rings as gifts...

But what if I above all else desire power?

I mean, who doesn't?

I'm going to throw Magnus' hat into the ring since I askeed about the Hexcrafter in the original interest thread.

I wanna hold off on the vampire talk till the recruitment actually starts. Let's not clog the Witches fun with talk of our undead horrors, lol.

This goes for PMs right now too, as I want to wait and see what all info Shadow will give us in regards to character creation. Could alter things(all sorts) a great deal.

@Monkeygod: That's fair enough.
We will discuss this later, witches and vampires. How exciting.

Here is my herb witch, Grey Eht. I figure the party will need a true healer type and she fits the bill as well as you can without the ability to channel.

Think I'm gonna have fun and make a White Haired Witch for this. Been wanting to give it a try and see how it works out.
Was originally gonna go for a witch killer but see someone's already booked that ;)

Shadow, for Scarred Witch Doctor, are you using the current version or the one that lets you use Con as your casting stat?

ElegantlyWasted wrote:

Use the most current version.

As you're allowing 3rd Party content, I guess the Witchknight is allowed as well.

Working myself in a Witch Hunter Half Orc, melee style to help all those squishy witches hurl their hexes from a safe distance ;)
