I just started reading this scenario and I am excited to meet Jairo the Enlightener again! Do we know if he was ever able to liberate himself from his servitude to Pasha Mulia al'Jakri since #6-11: The Slave Master's Mirror? I know some players who are going to ask.

Jairo's story hasn't been addressed since 6-11, and in this module (8-10) it is never mentioned.

The module does say that he remembers any PC who played through 6-11, and even offers to give them a free noble's outfit (with gems) if they do not own one. This is necessary to avoid penalties when doing some of the social skill checks. (Other PCs who have not played 6-11 can buy a noble's outfit.)

So... wing it?

Scarab Sages 4/5 5/55/5 *

Pasha commanded Jairo by using a magic ring, probably a Ring of Djinni Calling. This ring summons a specific djinni from the Plane of Air, and Jairo returned there following the events in The Slave Master's Mirror. So he is probably still susceptible to being conjured by the Pasha, but it does not come up in this scenario.

One of my local GMs and I just ran this at our FLGS earlier tonight. To help players and GMs with the Gala, we came up with a couple of ideas:

For Players - We put the names of the NPCs as well as their races, genders, and professions on note cards. We then came up with descriptions for clothing (for the ones that didn't already have that information in the scenario) and had them "located" at appropriate places at the party. It helped players visualize things, and also gave hints as to who should approach each NPC, and whether or not to do so in large groups or in smaller groups.

The descriptions we came up with:
* Almoshtari (F) Invisible stalker historian - draped in colorful beaded fabric and streaming ribbons. Middle of the gala.
* Fairuza Bereket (F) Djinni librarian - colorful yet monotone robes, everything arranged perfectly and precisely. Edges of the gala.
* Ghassan El-Amin (M) Djinni archivist - dark and professional clothing, raven on shoulder. Far corner of gala.
* Lineji Niarndu (F) Gnome museum curator - frizzy orange hair, mismatched eyes, colorful clothing. Kite stuck in tree, edge of gala.
* Mithradatha (M) Djinni vizier diplomat - muted royal colors, slightly formal style. Edge of the gala near the punch bowl.
* Vivek Vallathol (~M) Air Veela archaeologist - bright colors, nearly see-through clothing. Center of the gala on the dance floor.
* Wan Feng (M) Imperial sky dragon ambassador - appears as a Tian man with white hair and loose, flowing clothing. Middle of the gala.
* Zhalla bint Rathmozen (F) Sylph aristocrat - elven-style clothing in royal colors. Middle of the gala.

For GMs - Kevin, my fellow local GM, came up with a 2 page (or 1-page double-sided) chart with all of the relevant DCs and variables for each NPC. He will be uploading it to the PFS Prep soon (and once he does I'll append this post with a direct link).

Hope that helps people out!

Thanks to Mike for the descriptions, they really came in handy.

There was some serious frustration when I realized the arcanist didn't have spells per day listed.

Very Helpful descriptions, Mike. Thank you! Looking forward to the DC chart on PFS prep.

We are on the bleeding edge, here. I went looking for images of the city, Armun Kelisk. Found nothing. In fact, there is very little about it or the plane of air! All I could find is what is in this module -- Armun Kelisk is a 7 island system floating in air, with magically produced gravity to help humans and others feel safe/normal.

So with no imagery (but my desire to print out something to show my players) I went on the hunt for something that might at least be close. I settled on this image from Tyler:

http://tyleredlinart.deviantart.com/art/floating-city-kerris-318526624

If any other GMs out there try to use artwork, maybe that will tide you over until Paizo starts producing some of their own? Have fun.

There is an error with clue #4:

Clue #4 wrote:
"Curious about the imprisoned elemental lords? I would take care who you ask such dangerous questions. Fortunately for you, I mean you no ill will, and I do happen to have information for you. Ranginori, the lord of air, is trapped in the Untouchable Opal. Lysianassa, the lord of water, is trapped in the Garnet Brand. Atreia the lord of fire, is trapped in the Gasping Pearl. Finally, Sairazul, the lord of earth, is trapped in the Moaning Diamond."

From Planes of Power pg. 6, Lysianassa is trapped in the Gasping Pearl, and Atreia is trapped in the Garnet Brand. The puzzle later in the scenario is correct with the garnet representing fire and the pearl representing water.

I got the Gala helper sheet uploaded last night (but paizo.com was down so I couldn't post the link until just now heh).

Thank GM Kevin for creating it - I'm just the messenger :)

I'm prepping TOW, Part 2 right now and I'm looking at area B, The Fundamental Chamber. The Codex of Fundamental Dominion is written entirely in Auran. What do you do if players don't speak the language, have no linguistics, or do not have comprehend languages? How have any of you who've run this scenario handled that?

One option would be to have the book change languages like Ilyralene's book does in C2. They could also ask for Jairo's assistance, possibly with a fourth wall-breaking reminder to be prepared.

Can someone confirm that Chalissier the Arcanist's stat block is written wrong? There is no (#/day) at each level of spells.

If I am correct a 6th level Archanist with 18 Int should have:
3rd level (3/day) Lightning Bolt
2nd level (5/day) invisibility, sonic scream
1st level (5/day) magic missile, obscuring mist, shocking grasp, windy escape

Or was it intestinal to imply that he doesn't have all his spells left for the day? It makes a big difference if he has three lightning bolts or only one.

They are in a major city. They can run out and get a scroll of comprehend languages for 25gp. Or maybe they can ask one of the azata librarians to translate it for them.

I suspect that it was just a mistake and he really needs every spell.

My mistake on that. I was using some of Chalissier's stats from the previous adventure as a base, and clearly I grabbed that incorrect formatting along with the statblock.

Correct spells per day, should be:

Subtier 3–4
2nd (3/day)
1st (5/day)

Subtier 6–7
3rd (4/day)
2nd (5/day)
1st (5/day)

The encounter in high tier can be a bit rought but players have plenty of cover and could use that to avoid several players getting hit in one attack

Difference between 8–10 and 8–12:
The information Thurston provided in the 8–12 thread is accurate for the version of Chalissier that appears in that scenario, which is different from the version of Chalissier that appears in 8–10. The spells per day in 8–10 are the same as in 8–12 except that in 8–10, the Subtier 6–7 Chalissier receives 3 3rd level spells per day rather than 4. He gains a bit of power as an arcanist between the two scenarios, effectively casting as a 7th level arcanist by the time 8–12 rolls around.

Thank you for correcting me, I didn't read 8-12 in detail, just skimmed it to see what maps and pawns I will need for it.

Hmmm.. Area C2 has some odd wispy cloud bits, just trying to get my head around what the map is of before i try to run through it.

Guessing that it is a part of the library but is it literally clouds on the second floor many feet above C1?

From C1 description:
The most striking details of the room, however, are the thick
clouds suspended in the air between the balcony and the ceiling.
Atop these stationary clouds rest additional bookshelves, chairs,
desks, and podiums.

5/5 5/55/55/5

How many "rounds" are there at the dinner party?

Silver Crusade 4/5 5/5 *

BNW - good thought... guessing for me i will give them the idea they can split up and visit people in groups and a conversation with someone being about a half hour - means the evening can keep going and it will just mean time going on.

Not a definite, but its a social event taking the full day/evening so would not see any hard limits unless they completely nark off someone with their interactions or it has gotten to an in game point where the players have gotten enough intel and seems a good point to guide them on.

Trying to work out if there is a perception/know(nobility)/diplomacy to get the idea of the social dynamics if the players try to scope the room before interacting.

Silver Crusade 4/5 5/5 *

I had the gala more pegged as the formal tux standard around affair with the waiters carrying trays of canopies than a dinner party - might have just been my take on it as the time of day and the style of it are not really pinned down.

More mixing and not restricted to a meal time or seating placements etc. -Was why it was more of stretch on as long as needed type event for social interaction attempts. (and it took me a minute to link from dinner to gala :) )

Appropos of nothing, kudos to author for a gem of a turn of phrase in Ashasar's closing exposition:

Locally, our new motto for the Society is 'calamity through ignorance'. :)

There's a blanket -2 penalty to all charisma-based checks to influence nobles and other prissy people if you aren't in appropriate attire, although technically you don't need noble's outfits to avoid the penalty the vast majority of the time--the slightly cheaper and lighter courtier's outfit will serve that purpose just as well, at least mechanically. (The courtier's outfit is also the item that has this particular rule attached to it.)

Ah, I only checked the entry for a noble's outfit. That said, the PCs don't have to buy one themselves, as he will lend an outfit to each PC even if they haven't completed 6-11.

I'm quite confused about the elevation in area C2. Presumably the clouds in the middle are 40 feet above the balcony on the edge of the map, which is likely around 10 feet above C1. I don't see any mention of how PCs navigate the different height levels and it is unlikely that they can fly, especially in the 1-2 tier.

I also don't understand the arcane reservoir for Chalissier. Is it intended that he has used up 3 points before the fight? He should start with 5 or 9 points depending on the sub-tier.

Grand Lodge 4/5

I have not seen it make a difference, as the PCs tend to stay on the ground save for those with potions of fly. The second floor map has been sadly superfluous.

The book they are looking for is 40 feet off the ground, making it nearly impossible for a set of 1-2 players to read it without Fairuza's help. It just strikes me as poor design.

Sovereign Court 4/5 5/5 **** Venture-Agent, Nebraska—Omaha

Even though only one level is shown, I understood the upper area of the room to be filled with clouds in several levels 10-60ft above the ground level. The clouds on the map are the level at the same height as the balcony. The particular book they are looking for is 50ft above the ground, but anyone with decent Climb and Acrobatics could navigate between the clouds and reach the upper areas by climbing bookcases or on top of desks.

Silver Crusade 4/5 5/5 *

My take on the layout for this fight...

C1 description "An open door on the western wall empties
out into a hallway, and a ladder near the eastern wall leads up to
the second floor balcony."

C2 description "thick clouds suspended in the air between the balcony and the ceiling."

This would be super cool with full 3d maps and full sphere fog clouds but i think in this case we only really have what a couple of maps to pull it off with :)

60ft roof

30-40ft C2 balcony (ladder on the east, Opening to outside on the far East)

0ft C1 (entrance on west, ladder on the east side up) shadows of the balcony

For me i set up both levels (guards were avoided so was only the one combat)
We had Challanor getting nauseated, dimensional sliding into hiding and people dropping onto bookcases and hunting him down.

The ladder is on the middle of the map vertically and 4-5 spaces in..

4/5 *

Is the party under time pressure for this scenario? I was reading through it trying to find a reason why they cannot simply wait for the official opening of the Azure Hall if they cannot negotiate their way in early.

It's an optional encounter. The sidebar says that Jairo can send a letter to get them into the Hall if they can't get in or to avoid the fight.

1/5 *

I don't see a consensus here. C1/C2, I don't understand how the PC's are supposed to reach the upper level with the book. I doubt any of my PC's will have access to flight yet. How have other groups succeeded?

Grand Lodge 4/5

Handwaved, mostly.

We used the flying carpets they provided us with to get around the city.

Silver Crusade 4/5 5/5 *

east side of the room has a tall ladder (between the two tables on the right side) described in the C1 description.
As they were searching in the room I ended up starting the fight on the clouds/balcony.

5/5 *****

I am prepping this now. For low tier groups trying to reach the cloud sections in the last part, each of the guards in the concordance encounter carries a potion of fly which should make life much easier.

I am also looking at Chalissier's stat block.. Is it intended that he shouldn't start with the right amount of arcane pool points? He should have 3+half class level but has significantly less than that in his stat block.

This:

jmclaus wrote:

Plus this:

andreww wrote:

Equals this:

page 6 wrote:
Jairo provides the PCs with flying carpets (specifically, one 10-foot-by-10-foot carpet of flying per two PCs or Small or Medium companion creatures, and one carpet each for Large companions). He informs them that they may use these transports to travel at their leisure after the party for the duration of their stay in Armun Kelisk.

So if the PCs are not able to fly up to the book, a simple wisdom or intelligence check should remind them to just call a carpet over and mount up.

Silver Crusade 4/5

So for purposes of 6-11 boon when it says PC here it means this Character and NOT this Player, correct?

Prepping for this weekend.

If you read (2/7) to mean he's spent (or never had) 2 of his 7, then the low tier reads correctly. High tier is just flat wrong - enough that I'm fixing it. In high tier it appears he should have 5/9 avaliable to him (or he's spent 4/9, as it seems to have been written).

No, they will be accosted anyway; they can try to talk their way out, or they can fight, but that's a pretty important plot point. The skill check only represents whether they find the information before they get jumped. (Subject to verification; I don't have my copy in front of me and it's been a few days since I ran it.)

I'm pretty content to give the players the information as-presented because we're talking about legendary rumor and myth, and perhaps that single detail of the mult-faceted clue is just given incorrectly.
