It's that time again.... We're revving up for Free RPG Day, and I got passed my copy of this module so that I can GM it.

So, question time:

Chronicles and rules for this module:

I cannot find the chronicle sheets under the product description. Where are they? Will deaths be reversible like We Be Goblins (1)? Is there any goal needed for success, or is survival allowed?

Goblin Pregen Sheets:

I prefer to print them out because I have a color printer, and the library's photocopier is black and white only. Will the file for this be available soon?

Maps:

Do the artists know what they have done??? By all that is holy, there are no goblin heads on stakes in this scenario for me to draw on the map. Every OTHER goblin scenario has featured goblin heads on stakes somewhere on the map. I feel like this omission jeoapardizes the entire Paizo spacetime continuity and must be corrected!

Seriously, is there any place where goblin heads on stakes can be logically inserted, or will I have to settle for putting them into my map's compass rose?

Handle Animal:

I am assuming here that Squealy counts as a domestic animal, and thus handle animal can be performed untrained on him as a charisma check. Is this correct?

Other Thoughts:

I would have preferred that the baby goblins had let themselves out of the cages, and that the games they played would have involved wreaking havoc on the adult gobs in the tribe. I have always, for instance, wanted to set fire to Chief Gutwad's home. On the other hand, I love the idea of getting the toad and raiding the wedding party. I also loved Magical Maggie. She'll be an excellent NPC for my characters to interact with.

On Reading:

I've come to the conclusion that all goblins must be secret readers, considering how often opportunities to read come up in these modules. I do love that the sparkly words being the cause of the goblin raid, and the suggestion that the invitation be fire-proof!

Hmm

As far as chronicles go, the rules for running WB4G are usually released a day or so before Free RPG Day, which should include things like resolving deaths and any possible primary and secondary conditions. Hopefully they should have prinable copies of the pregens at the same time.

We are looking at getting the required chronicles and pregens up next week, as well as the sanctioning instructions. Check the blog Monday!

This seems as good a place as any to ask my question. Is there any plan to allow those of us who will be at Origins (GMing even) to get access to the Free RPG Day stuff?

Will these be added to our downloads in time for making maps, for example?

I believe PDF's won't be made avalable until after Free RPG Day. If you need an advance copy, speak to your FLGS and they should be able to get you an advance copy to help with prep.

I made some patches for the first challenge and would love to share them if I could figure out how to put jpgs on here

Ugh they seem to only be getting to our stores in Ottawa on Thursday. Does not leave much time to disseminate them and prep.

Short term: Put them up on Google Drive. Share the link here.

Long term: Upload them to PFS shared prep. Feel the adulation of future GMs. I'm on my phone so I cannot get you a link to PFS shared prep site right now but I'm sure someone will be along shortly with the link.

What is the link of PFS shared prep?

I suspect they will not have anything for We B4 until after Free RPG day though. It isn't officially released until then.

I have a question. I normally try to list events several days in advance here on the boards in the PFS in Northern Indiana. I just tried to set up an event but I did not see We B4 Goblins! listed. How do I create an event if I cannot list the mod? Or should I expect it listed tomorrow?

John, thank you for your rapid response. That is one of the things I love about PFS.

Also, as I am pleased to say that the first session I am running will be my 100th mod as a PFS GM. I wanted something memorable, so I am glad that the stars were right.

Here is a question on a boon.

Spoiler:
Is the only way to remove the Dead Goblin boon via spending 16 Prestige Points to resurrect it and reactivate the boon? Or, if a player does not want the boon again (or perhaps cannot afford the 16 Prestibe Points to raise the toad from the dead), would a remove curse work to remove the penalty on interacting with goblins?

Paizo Employee 4/5 Pathfinder Society Lead Developer

William Ronald wrote:

** spoiler omitted **

Regarding the toad:

The only way to restore the toad to life is to spend 16 Prestige Points. A character who does not want a toad in the first place can always leave the toad at the Grand Lodge, but once the toad has died in the PC's service, it will always remain as an ignoble reminder of its amphibian sacrifice. Remove curse is not an option, but there are some rare Chronicle sheet rewards that allow one to cross out negative boons.

Toad at your own risk!

Fortunately, after about levels 5–7, PCs rarely run into goblins, so the dead toad is unlikely to play a big role at higher levels.

Nice badges!

I think someone didn't cross-check the Languages.

Magical Maggie: Common, Elven, Halfling.
Mugmurch: Goblin, Varisian
The rest only know Goblin.

Should we:
* Have Maggie know Goblin (allows all them to talk)
* Change Mugmurch's language to Common (which restricts dialogue to him, but gives more creature they can talk to)
* Pretend I never noticed and allow all NPCs to communicate freely with the Gobs

I prefer allowing the PCs to communicate with all the NPCs.

Liberty's Edge

Can the Toad boon cross campaigns?

I know the default is that anything earned at a Core table stays in Core and anything earned at a non-Core table stays non-Core.

The Toad boon is a completely separate sheet so it shouldn't cause any bookkeeping issues if someone plays at a non-Core table and gives the Toad to a Core PC or vice versa, but I understand if Campaign management would prefer not to have that happen.

If it helps, the Campaign Setting book for Golarion states that Taldane ("Common") takes a lot of its vocabulary from Varisian. The way I'm running it, Mugmurch knows Varisian well enough to pick up on some of what Maggie says, allowing them to communicate in a rudimentary fashion (probably with lots of pantomime involved) - enough that she can try to sell the goblins her potions and carry on a basic conversation with them (with Mugmurch as the intermediary) almost like a game of Telephone. As an example:

What Maggie says: "Well, look at you fine green gentlemen - and loyal customers to boot! Are you interested in some of my Miracle Medicine? Only 300 gold pieces each for fine goblins like yourselves!"

What Mogmurch hears: "Sell boot.. potion 300 gold pieces! Fine goblins!"

What the rest of the goblins hear through Mogmurch: "She wants to sell us her boot for 300 gold pieces!"

That's just an example I came up with on the fly. You could probably do better.

Bret,

Actually, I am planning on playing that out without understanding. A good merchant should be able to make a deal within those confines (no common language), so it will be interesting to see how the players do it.

I only wish I was fluent enough in another language to pull off speaking in it while running her. It may end up being Charlie Brown teacher/adult talk for her.

Did we ever settle whether WB4G is replayable?

Also, if you play more than once on Free RPG day, can you get the free rpg day boon more than once? Does it matter if you play at different stores? (In practice I am locally discouraging people from doing this, we only have 16 seats across 2 stores, and it would be disappointing to find out someone didn't get to play because someone got greedy.)

Yes, it is replayable for 1st level, as is the case for other Tier 1–2 modules.

My inclination is to say that no, one can only earn a single toad—likely won't have a chance to discuss that with the rest of the team, but I'd play it safe, especially if seats are at a premium.

Am I correct that even if a GM runs this event multiple times, (I am planning on twice today), it is only one toad per player/GM? (It will be amusing for my Dwarven Warpriest of Torag to have the boon.)

Also, I was able to set my event up but had to list it as an unspecified event as WeB4Goblins! was stillnot listed.

Additionally, the badges were great. Let's hope for a lot of fun and mayhem today.

I'd say the Free Toad is limit one per customer, player or GM.

Playing this was tough. I'll save my product review for after I GM it, but table consensus was that this was our least favorite WBG.

The challenges at the beginning were railroady. Giving everyone a Trait that pointed us each towards a particular challenge? It would have probably been better from a player perspective of just having the GM narrate our strengths.

We nearly TPKd during the first fight (slowly and painfully). Two of us dropped, and the remaining two only managed to drop Kettlehead. I think 1 point of fire damage was all we were able to do (via Poog's Burning Hands) to the lackeys. Our GM had them flee, but they could have killed us all in one more round. It was not fun trying to hit Goblin ACs with penalties to-hit and damage.

I played Chuffy, and the GM had to say I "found" a dagger before the last fight. Most of the time I was either at +0 with my rock or -4 with my dart (no Precise Shot). Plenty of Dogslicers to go around, which he's not proficient with. But at least I was only 1d3-1, compared to Mogmurch's 1d3-2.

I appreciate the author's suggestion that Common = Taldane = Varisian, but none of us veterans picked up on it. That fight at least went hilariously in our favor. We swarmed the horse, and kept smiling and giving the woman a "thumbs up" that it'd be dead soon. She missed hitting us with her bombs and we interpreted her hitting the horse as helping us (even if it hurt). I gifted her a raccoon on a meathook and she ran away (aka "Gave us all her stuff").

We apparently went off script at the wedding, focusing on burning down the house first, then stealing the gifts (and cake) while everyone was putting out the fire. Goblin stealth for the win.

But the module was mostly a painful slog of "I miss, I miss, I deal one point of nonlethal damage".

I had a blast running this one, other players at our store agreed that it was almost as good as the first one which we all loved.

Spoiler:

During Happy Beat our goblins got crazy! Mogmurch doused himself with oil and lit himself on fire! The goblins all asked each other what his name was, once they found out what it was they started chanting "Mogmurch! Mogmurch!"

Poog, not to be outdone as "just friends" with Zarongel, used burning hands pointing his hands at himself hitting himself and all the goblins behind him. Since he only shouted out Zarongel's name the chanting went to "Mogmurch, Zarongel".

One complaint was that Maggie couldn't speak with the goblins. I didn't notice that no one could communicate with Maggie until right when I ran that even though I read the scenario multiple times and took pages of notes to familiarize myself with it. Because I didn't notice this during my prepwork, I couldn't figure out a work around with it. If this wasn't run for PFS I would have just changed it so that she knew Varisian, however as this was PFS I couldn't change that.

Another complaint is that the goblins consistently did so little damage that it felt like they were pixel chipping away the enemies. Quite often the goblins did 0 damage because of their own penalties which meant they did 1 nonlethal.

If Mogmurch is using his club then he's doing it wrong. He should be throwing his alch fires, more damage and touch ac.

And killing or capturing Maggie yields 4 acid flasks and 3 more alch fires from here. Then Mogmurch goes wild. At least that's what happened when I played him.

At our table, everyone at least tried all the challenges.

Nefreet wrote:

It took a bit of time, but the PCs would get one goblin into flank and just mob him down and then move onto the next. They weren't doing much damage, but it didn't take much with only 6 hit points on the goblins and 10-12 on the PCs (And most people had happy beat badges as well, that they held in reserve.

Nefreet wrote:

Maggie has a dagger, so you should have found one there.

Nefreet wrote:

You can't go off script at the wedding. The script quite literally is "Here is where each NPC is, and what they do. Let the players do whatever they think will be fun. If they survive, they win." You could sit in the bushes at the back till the raid was over, then use bluff to tell everyone how awesome you were, and it would still count as a win.

I ran this yesterday for several players, and had a good time. Couple of questions/notes.

1. I just assumed that Maggie could speak Goblin. Otherwise the scene doesn't make any sense, as she's explicitly supposed to talk to her. The goblins couldn't reasonably be multilingual - they all just came out of the whelping cage, after all. I had her speak strangely, as she learned the language academically, rather than by interacting with goblins.

2. My PCs, to my surprise, were pretty kindhearted for goblins.

They beat up Kettlehead and his friends, but sent them back to the village instead of killing them. He ended up following Chuffey around later, as Chuffey dragged him out of the bog when he fell in after getting hurt.

When they met Maggie, they actually spent time trying to free her wagon rather than attacking her, and in the end she actually ended up heading on rather than getting killed or chasing them away - they invaded her wagon, so she did eventually start chasing them away, but while that was happening the other managed to motivate the mule sufficiently that I thought it was best to have it pull the wagon free. They ended up running off into the swamp with some of her stuff (including the invitation).

3. The goblin raid doesn't seem to include any other goblins, at least not that I could find. I presumed the tribe sent some other warriors that dealt with the other wedding guests - I basically had the non-named halflings run away when everything started, and the rest of the goblin warriors mostly chased the guests or pigs around.

The PCs started everything by sneaking into the barn and setting it on fire - Mogmurch set the place on fire with explosive mud and alchemist's fire, and Chuffey drank the Elixir of Fire Breath and went to town a few times. Rita decided to ride one of the horses around and eventually leapt off of it into the wedding cake (for a soft landing) and into a fight with the bride.

The fight with the bride and groom seemed to take an awfully long time, with the PCs and opponents both having a pretty low attack roll, so it was a lot of swing-miss swing-1 point of damage.

While that was happening, Mogmurch invaded the home riding Squealy Nord (after Lottie stopped him cold by holding the door closed, he leapt through the kitchen window). Chuffey decided he wanted the groom's fancy vest, so he took several turns making CMB rolls to disrobe him.

All in all we had a good time, just a few things that took some changes from the GM.

Sczarni 5/5 5/55/5 ***

Our GM couldn't find anything about other raiders, either, hence our hit-and-run tactics.

It sounded like there was supposed to be something. We got the impression it was cut in editing.

I look forward to GMing it to see for myself.

Shadow Lodge 4/5 Venture-Captain, California—San Francisco Bay Area South & West

My wife ran this twice at one of our local stores. I played (Poog) at the first table, and during the second session I sat in at a third table being run by a first-time PFS GM. The only combat encounter that dragged on at either table I saw was once with the second grabby-cat in the cave; even with four goblins surrounding it it went a couple of rounds hardly taking any damage.

While Reta has a decent chance to hit, there's no doubt that Mogmurch (and alchemist's fire) is the best approach for the early combat. Of course the Elixir of Fire Breath (assuming you get it) is far and above the best thing to use later on; even if they manage their saving throws, it can deal with any of the farmyard opponents in short order.

The badges, if you get them, are pretty handy, too. At the first table nobody managed to trap a spider; at the second table the spiders were no problem (all a matter of how the dice fell, of course).

I haven't seen any one mention licking their toads for the 5 temp hit points. Which was really handy when I played.

Hence why I'm reserving my full review for after I GM it. There's always the chance that not everything was explained to us as players, or that we discovered everything.
