Not quite sure where to post this one, so chose discussion. We currently have a player in our group that made a ratfolk, but a weird question arose when he began role playing him, how do ratfolk sound when they talk? Is it something like Deekan from neverwinter nights running around say "No, Deekan not monster, Deekan friend." Or do they talk like average humans like the Badger from the Narnia movie.
I know that players can choose how they have their own characters sound, so he could theoretically be the jarjar bunks of the race, or some wierd savant...up to him really, but without knowing how they sound kinda hard to figure out which it is.

I usually assume that unless they are of low intelligence, they speak in a normal(-ish) speech fashion. I might interject a few idiosyncrasie such as:
- Exagerated "S" for snake- or reptilian races,
- the occasional rat squeeks for ratman, or
- maybe slightly different prononciation, word choice or word order (like a foreigner spekaing english might do if he directly translate words or expression from his mother language).
But overall language would be normal for a normal intelligence character.
I might allow a character with no points in linguistics or who has not chosen a specific language to be able to have a few broken sentences if it can be reasonally explain that he was exposed to this language (say like my broken Korean for living there a couple of years). Then yeah thecharacter would might sound like Deekan.

Kinda figured it would be like that considering they get common as a base language while goblins and kobolds sound more like Deekan because they don't. Almost how a person who just learns japanese might sound like they were talking in 3rd person all the time just due to how the language is set up and personal miss understanding. But its still funny to hear him talk like that.

My favorite voice I've done for a ratfolk was essentially Wallace Shawn (aka the Vizzini from Princess Bride). Generally speaking, I think the voice fits relatively well for the race as a whole. The lisp makes sense given the large incisors. Obviously, to each his own, but any other ratfolk I play will definitely be a variation on this characterization.

Never get in a duel with a ratfolk when DEATH is on the line!
