Is this a legitimate use of the bestow curse spell?

The Exchange

"You grow a sixth finger, and summon a Spaniard named Inigo Montoya to your position!"

Note: I didn't put this in the Rules Questions section, because it ain't a serious question, lol!

Scarab Sages

Sure. An angry swashbuckler is far less damaging than any other option given by the spell.

Yes, but it will grow a sixth finger, and the target will yell "I summon Inigo Montoya! Where is he?!"

hah hah I like it!

speaking of the Bestow Curse spell, it has CERTAINLY gotten more powerful over the years with splatbooks adding to it hasn't it? (you can literally make it a save or die pretty much, because there is a curse that causes the target to lose all their class levels and such and have to start over in a form of amnesia)

Edit: Found it, you basically lose all class features but keep most of the base stuff like HP, its still MASSIVELY crippling though.

Bestow curse is a really short spell. That's not what it does.

To the contrary.

Insanity can also be inflicted via magic. Consider allowing the spell insanity to merely inflict 1 randomly determined insanity per 5 caster levels on its victim rather than causing permanent confusion. Bestow curse can also inflict a single insanity on a foe, although in this case the insanity is also a curse.

I don't have my book in front of me but aren't those optional rules?
Even at its worst it is a save or suck. Hold person has been doing that from a level before.
Sure it is rough to place on a PC but I don't see it being too overly powerful in the hands of PCs.

That rather seems to be overlooking this specific passage in the Bestow Curse spell description.

Quote:
Bestow curse allows the caster to invent a novel effect, but one no more powerful than those described in the spell itself (no worse than a 50% chance of losing actions, a –4 penalty on checks, or a –6 penalty to an ability score).

It seems pretty clear that regardless of what the curse is the limits of the spell are those bolded, that's what the curse does, no more, no less. The section on madness is an optional set of rules from the Game Mastery Guide that give the GM extra options for when he's running a game, not a specific rule that always applies to the spell.

I wonder how amnesia could affect physical things like mount, third hand mutation, oracle curses, etc.

Actually, could I get limited amnesia/curse to forgot only the bad stuff?

And then have it continuously coming back to bite you in the butt as strange enemies you have no idea why you're fighting keep showing up?

That definitely sounds like it would fit the bill?

EDIT: I could see far worse things, to be honest.

Curse someone to *think* they're drow (with no mechanical effects) with all their might.

Curse someone to only be comfortable using melee weapons in ranged combat or ranged weapons in melee combat, due to mental issues.

The possibilities are endless...

Now I want to see a character cursed with a case of the yips. For real GM entertainment, the curse doesn't manifest immediately.

There are many examples of this, though I have seen intense debates on if the proper common name for such a curse is "tequila", "vodka", or "whiskey".

Well, oracle's curse is class ability, so I was thinking if you can curse Oracle forgot being blind, for example.

LOL

The oracle’s curse cannot be removed or dispelled without the aid of a deity.

I would say trying to circumvent an Oracle's Curse would fall under this.

That sounds a little more like Phantasmal Killer than Bestow Curse. Bestow Curse seems a little like the Witch smiling at you and pointing out, "You have 6 fingers your right hand: someone was looking for you..."
