I agree that Boomer is underused. It's like they went 'crap, we need a non-batman villian.' The Eel, Gizmo, Red Panzer, Metallo... A lot of c-list villians that would replace Boomer AND Slipknot.
And not have screamed as much *kill me* as slipknot.
Juat to point out Osterander's Deadshot would have shot <redacted> in a heart beat.
Viola Davis was excellent, and I found myself rooting for El Diablo. The overuse of tattoos made his face so much harder to read.
I did like Robey's Harley, except for the tattoos. Leto's Joker was pathetic, and the tattoos made it dumber.
Have I said they overused the tattoos?
The soldiers were also an uneeded diversion, and the Chekov's gun of Katana didn't fire. (Really, you put a magical soul taker sword in the movie and it isn't used to stop magical beings?) And given how Incubus looked like the Destroyer...

Boomerang has been one of the mainstay characters of the Squad through most of it's incarnations. He was in the original Ostrander squad, he was in the 90's squad that was seen in Superboy comics, New 52 squad's first incarnation (in a HILARIOUS manner) and in the NEw Suicide Squad he was with Deadshot and Harley the only members that stayed trough it. And now with rebirth he is again the mainstay character.
Point is, Boomer's kinda the mascot of the team by now.

Matthew,
I don't recall Destroyer from DC Comic lore.
Also this: I think Basilisk wouldn't work because no one knows them. Hydra at least wouldn't confuse as many people. Maybe.
Still rather they had saved Enchantress for Justice League Dark.
Destroyer, as in Destroyer armor from Thor I believe?

Aaand, negative press for a consensus "Meh" film caused a 67% drop from weekend 1 to 2. For comparison, in weekend 2, the movie that was supposed to right the ship of the DCEU made only 10M more than the R rated adult cartoon "Sausage Party." Note that this is 10M less than Deadpool's weekend 2 take, so the Merc made it back above water. Total estimates put the film at around 225M, well below their numbers needed to hit the quoted "800M to break even" that sources have posited. I seriously doubt that it needs that high, but two DCEU films in a row to see nearly 70% decline in weekends 1 to 2 isn't a good sign (for reference: -50 to 60% weekend to weekend is common for a good or popular film, leading a strong opening to have about a 2 month run in theaters. less than 50% is nearly unheard of in weekend 2, but for weekends 3 to 5 its not uncommoon to see 30 to 40% declines on good movies from word of mouth).
I'm hoping SS stays in theaters long enough to get a good 8 or 9 week run (to match X6:Apocalypse), but I don't think the C-List villains can sustain a 12 week run like BvS's "Big 3". An 18 week Deadpool run is certainly out of the cards (Civil War didn't even make it as long as Deadpool).

Rosgakori,
I'm VERY familiar with that. However I thought he was referencing a DC source since...well this is a thread about a DC movie....
sorry I wasn't clear
I was commenting the Incubus appearance was looking a lot like the Destroyer in Thor, just with a bit more glowy and a face.
(Aside, cutting the arm off of Incubus with the soul taker just gave me a 'better' thought. Cut out the Joker scenes (except for the initial meeting, the breakout and the car chase/Harley capture if you think you need them) and the soldiers to have the team split with El Diablo, KAtana, and Croc taking down Incubus magic vs magic. Would have given Katana more screen time, and Croc (who I liked in his brief moments) and Diablo (who I liked a lot) a bit more time.)

Then they should have *done* something with him. That's my main beef. At least Arrow's Boomer was enjoyable.
Heck a scene where after Harley steals the purse, Boomer breaks open a window and comically tries to hide stealing a stuffed unicorn would have worked to give him *something* to do.

I'm thinking his scenes were cut to keep the pg13 rating.

All I know is Suicide Squad isn't saving the DCEU. Sad but true.
I do think though they'll make the money back on it since it's not NEARLY the stinker that BVS was. That's just my opinion though.
As I mentioned before, the industry rumor is that between the Marketing Blitz and the reshoots, the actual budget on the film (not the mere 250M production budget) was actually upwards of 800M. I don't really think its that high, because beyond some catchy television spots and trailers, I wasn't nearly as inundated with promo as we were leading up to BvS. If its actuals were more in the 500M range (spend another amount equal to production on marketing and distribution), I see it making them back, but I personally doubt the film crests 600M globally. Especially since its missing the Chinese market completely, which alone gave BvS another 100M.

I think it is more that WB doesn't see 100% of ticket sales, so they need $800M in ticket sales so that their % covers all their costs.

I...I'm quite on the different team on that. Arrow's Boomerang was boring as hell. He was just some guy who happened to throw boomerangs and had a vendetta against one of the characters. Only thing different about him was that he threw boomerangs. SS's Boomerang was a bank robber (who robbed every bank in Australia at least once, loved that line), a backstabber, a!*$+++ who threws his teammates under a bus and clearly a coward as well. I think he had a clear personality and we the audience knew what kind of man he was.
True, Arrow's Boomer had more stuff to do but he was the main villain and the focus character of that episode, but what was he like, what kind of man he was except vengeful-these questions were left unanswered in my opinion.

Why do they spend so much on making movies these days!?
One big reason beyond just sales that caused Deadpool to be such a run away success was because it didn't spend as much money as other films (from what I understand at least) which means the money it makes has a larger profit margin.
Apparently this was even hinted at in some of the scenes because of Deadpool's power of 'breaking the Fourth Wall'.

plot? Who needs one of those...
Deadpool had a production budget of around 50m, and as an r rated film had a very low advertising presence leading up to it. The runaway record-breaking Feb opening though... Weekends 2 and 3 saw an ad blitz. Really most all of the advertising for Deadpool was all the goofy crap fox was doing across YouTube (cameos on different channels, etc). Fox invested cheaply on a risky license and turned a half a billion straight up profit.

Eh, his Ivan Oozeness wasn't a real turn off for me (but I'm an unabashed X series fan, even Origins). For me the biggest problem with Apocalypse was it was such a bland movie that focused more on the setpieces than how or why those setpieces were even there. Magneto, being Fassbender, the greatest ACTOR of this age, was such a shining beacon in such a crappy movie. It was, by far, the worst of the six main films, for me, but to be fair I haven't forced myself to be disgusted by the unnecessary inclusion of Sookie Stackhouse in DoFP's "Rogue Cut".
Still, I hope to see SS while its still in theater (maybe friday if I can get a non-grumpy wife solo visit or squeeze a mid-day showing out of her). Because surely its better than Apocalypse? I mean its a consensus Meh, versus a consensus Why Bother.

That would have been cool. I'd have loved to see more of all three of those characters (and, yeah, less of Boomerang, or Batman, or even the Joker, who was at least sorta relevant, being a big part of Harley's backstory and obsessive/codependent/character motivation).
Flagg didn't much impress me either. It's not his fault for the way he looks, but every time he was on-screen, I kept thinking that they couldn't afford Chris Pratt and hired a celebrity impersonator. :)

2 people marked this as a favorite. |

I loved the Batman and Flash cameos.
Both cameos where to my one of the highlights of the movie. Small things sure, but they felt like the characters they were supposed to be. Flash with his jokeful additude and self-confident demeanor felt jsut right. And this time Batman felt like...well, Batman. Way that scene played out was just the right tone of Batman for me. Dark, sure but he is not psychopat.

Well maybe because I kept thinking Apocalyse would fight the entire world's armies, wipe the floor with them, and he be like "Next?"
Has he EVER done that? Tradionally Apocalypse shows up in the background somewhere monologuing his grand philosophy while his horsemen do all the work... then routinely get their butts handed to them by only 4-5 mutants at a time.
People try to make it sound like Apocalypse is some gigantic big bad epic villain... but his actual showings have REALLY been weak. Heck, all of his greatest victories like Cable's timeline and Age of Apocalypse aren't really shown... it's just exposition that he's in charge of the world.
It gets even worse when he's described as '1st mutant' and around since ancient Egypt... back in the time period where he SHOULD have crushed the world under his thumb without Xavier and the X-men stopping him.

It's the price he pays for a being a last-minute replacement for the Daredevil villain they were originally going to use for X-Factor...
The Owl.
Yes, the Owl.

I think I'd have preferred the use of Owl... Apocalypse ended up with way too much baggage for me to really take seriously.
It's the different between taking someone weak and pathetic and building them up.... and claiming that someone was epicly awesome from the beginning of time and just had a bad day EVERY time we saw him...
Sometimes they need villains who have a bit more humble origins.
Apocalypes reminds me of an AP where we kick the crap out of a reawakened Runelord at level 1, 5, 9, 10 and 15... But yeah, he is an epic world conquerer ;)

Finally saw it over the weekend. It was an enjoyable movie.
Waller - Spot on. Nailed her.
Flag - Wimpy.
Katana - New 52 - Meh. Should have sided with Flag, not the villains.
Boomerang - Wimp. Spot on.
Deadshot - Not cold-hearted enough.
Diablo - Nailed him perfectly.
Killer Croc - Nailed his personality - Could have portrayed him better.
Joker - Surprisingly good. Wasn't needed except for Harley's origin.
Harley Quinn - Nailed her perfectly.
Just so she could be captured and have her knowledge used to destroy military targets? The Joint Chiefs the Pentagon briefing where she demonstrated what she could do would have worked much better.
Anyone else notice at the beginning when Waller was going to the meeting with the Brass she was talking about the Death of Superman and him being a hero, but when she was talking to them about creating Task Force X she was talking about him like he was a potential enemy?

I'd mostly be distracted if it switched sides during the same movie.
In one of Rob Liefield's Youngblood issues, he had a character named Battleaxe whose eyepatch kept switching sides between scenes. It was, even for him, distractingly bad. (Unless he was shouting out to Eye-gor and his side-switching hump, from Young Frankenstein, but I kinda doubt it.) :)

The DCCU starts off swimmingly with the enjoyable Man of Steel, a B+ for us. Then BvS:DoJ comes along and sucks a mighty egg. The theatrical release Missus Turin and I rate at a Z-, Charlie Brown style. The extended edition bumps it up to an F+.
Suicide Squad earns a D-. It could have been "Deadpool meets Guardians of Galaxy and fosters an orphanage packed full of awesome love children". Instead, we get ... meh.
We would have been mad if we'd paid cash money instead of dipping into our pile of bonus admission certificates that are going to expire soon regardless.
The previews for Wonder Woman and Justice League show great promise. Not so sure that they're going to be able to deliver, especially Justice League.

Turin the Mad |

I'm pretty sure Wonder Woman will. Suicide Squad's major problem, as I've stated previously, is the fact the villain doesn't match the threat for the Squad.
It would be more like if Aquaman had to fight the Flash's Rogues.
I was thinking along the lines of the Hulk fighting Rhino. No contest.
All the ingredients were there for awesome, but they used a bad recipe. As you and others have so well stated in this thread, it became a letdown.
I might pay $5 for it on Vudu just to have the collection string unbroken. I'll probably watch several hundred films more often once it gets there.

Grey,
I think the reason Deadpool won was because a) everyone saw the test footage, b) compelled Fox to make it and c) supported it when it came out.
Plus you know, plot.
And an R rating. Never underestimate the draw of forbidden fruit (and that, my friends, counts as at least a double entendre. Possibly more considering Deadpool's involved...)
