Just trying to get into character. How do you guys picture him? Sound? Mannerisms?
Also, how do you pronounce it? DREN-dull DRENJ is how I picture it (I hear it, I suppose)
I tend to play him as a stoned southerner, he talks slowly, with a drawl and slightly slurred speech.
Like Drandle Dreng. First name rhymes with "handle", surname's pronounced like the ending of "caDRE" and the beginning of "ENGine"
Also possibly like a rooster. First thing you hear every morning!

I played with a judge that does him as Elmer Fudd.

I play him as an absentminded, doddering old man who's possibly senile, probably drunk, and might even be a mad genius.
And he smells faintly of cabbage.

One of my local GMs, when playing Dreng, likes to ask the post-box-text "Are there any questions?" He waits for someone to speak and then immediately interrupts them, and maybe does that once or twice before actually letting them say something.
"Hey, sonny! Back in my day, we walked to school! Uphill both ways through the snow! And we LIKED IT THAT WAY!"

I pronounce his name DREN-dle (rhymes the word "end") DRENG (almost rhymes with "hang")
I portray him much as Zak Glade (Zefig) does—much like a slightly squeakier and less antagonistic version of Abraham Simpson from The Simpsons. He puts on a good show of being hard of hearing, a little slow to process information, and a bit smelly. On the other hand, Dreng's still pretty darn canny, and it's not entirely clear how much of his senility is an act. I think players have a bit more respect for him when he "show[s] that I've still got it" by ending a mission briefing while tottering away, pausing, and then returning to give back some of the PCs possessions that he accidentally swiped while they weren't looking. With a wink, he shuffles out of the room.

He managed to slip a mission briefing into my hand before I even noticed he was there. Then the entire party was nearly torn to shreds by escaped menagerie critters.

I play him as The Professor from Futurama, old, crazy, insanely devoted to his missions, and not to be underestimated. It also allows me to slip a "Good news Pathfinders!" into the briefing somewhere.
I tend to have him sound a little like Vizzini/Wallace Shawn.
*Walks in, looks around, sits down, and starts taking notes...*
Also, FWIW, I pronounce VC Dreng's name much the same as John.
His picture reminds me of Peter Falk, so I play him like Columbo.

You BETTER have gotten them home without a scratch....
I just play him like an older version of "The Dude".
Starfinder Superscriber
I always try to make his voice a little wheezy. Doesn't work so well in noisy halls at gamedays and conventions, but that's what I go for. I also try to play up the absent-minded.

I imagine him sitting on the front porch of the Grand Lodge in Absalom yelling at kids passing by to get off his lawn.

He's the Professor from Futurama. House coat, slippers, and all. And a beard.

Right after "The Paths We Choose" came out, I invited a friend to help GM it at a multi-table run, and he offered to do the Dreng intro. He channeled Tommy Chong into it, which was a huge hit (pun intended)!
I usually portray him as a stoner type, but for some reason after reading the thread I may have to go with playing him as Will Ferrell impersonating Harry Caray.

I have a friend who does him with the voice of the old guy from the Pepperidge Farms commercials.
I still like the idea of playing him as the Professor from Futurama. But I'd suggest one change from what Seth posted, above:
"Good news, everyone! YOU're going on an adventure! Oh, don't worry, this should be easy and harmless."
PCs say something.
"Don't take this lightly. This isn't going to be easy and harmless!"

He has always been a mix of Miracle Max and Joe Pesci when I run him. I also pronounce his name the same way John does.
Most I've seen him portrayed in my area is in a senile, hobo-ish way.

I play him as an over enthusiastic, forgetful, slightly crazy old man, with a flair for the dramatic - especially if he's in disguise!
He sort of remembers every young pathfinder (making reference to previous adventures) and also makes the PCs repeat what they have to do (and then seems surprised 'Really? How interesting, you must come and let me know how it goes!')
I like Dreng. :)

I've never been more prepared to answer this question! A friend is running Carrion Crown and asked me to record some dialogue of Drandle Dreng for the opener.
Enjoy!
I like how I'm still not sure if he's really senile, or pulling the I Clau-Clau-Claudius stratagem of appearing dumb so that you can survive in the shadow of nasty people. He does seem to send you into quite a few "accidental" revelations.
pepperidge fahm.
I blame Fromper.

Professor Farnsworth. With an extra helping of forgetfulness. Usually restarting the briefing at least twice.

I portray him exactly like John. Of course, considering John was the one who gave me a fair number of briefings (as Dreng) before I started GMing, there may be a reason for that...

Don't blame me. J's the one who does his voice that way - I've just played at his tables too many times. Haven't you played with him doing Drang at least once?
Deckard Cain, but with a bit more crazy old man put in.
I play him as John Cleese in his one turn as Q.
