Rules Questions

If a summoned creature swallows an item, does that item go back with the creature when it departs or does it just fall to the ground?

Probably falls to the ground. This is one of those cases not directly addressed by the rules.

If the creature is called, however, they probably take it with them.

Creatures summoned using the Summon Monster spell.

Summon Monster spells don't seem intended to permanently move anything between planes, so swallowed things ought probably fall to the ground. Though it is something the rules never really address.

I am now imagining an extraplanar delivery service that works by conjuring an outsider, feeding them the package, sending them back whence they came, then someone else somewhere else conjuring the same outsider....

Unattended items would go with...

Swallowed creatures would not.

:D

IMO.

It would probably go away with it. Some summoned creatures show up fully equipped with weapons and armor, but it's grey area. Better ask your GM what he thinks.

As far as I understand it, summoned creature do not planar travel to answer a summon. What you call is a "projection" of the creature from its home plane.

If you want to move objects between planes using called creatures, my ruling would be to really have the creature itself planar travel, as with the spells planar binding and the like.

Which, incidently , explains why summoned creatures mostly have no problems obeying very dangerous or self-destructive orders. When the summoned creatures "dies", it just ends the summoning, and the creature gets (painfully) zapped back to what it was doing at home.

A summoned creature is just a projection. It can't take anything with it or actually be harmed. A called creature, on the other hand, is actually physically brought there and can be permanently harmed.

My ruling would be anything summoned by the spell (including weapons of creatures) go when the summon ends, is dispelled, or the summoned creature is destroyed and that anything that was not part of summon spell stays. Which would include things falling to the ground that were held or swallowed.

I think the armor they "bring with them" is ALSO supposed to be a projection. I.e., not actually "brought with them" at all, just projected. Thus, when the spell ends it winks out, but the swallowed object just falls.
