This sentence in their write-up is of particular interest, given the discussion going on right now:
The tricky thing about creating a huge MMO based on an existing property is balancing the fan-service for existing fans with appealing to players that may not be as familiar with the franchise.

I am surprised Shroud of the Avatar is not on there. Or do they not think that will be a success? It is one of the games that I following closely and I must say that their environments ("scenes") are getting more beautifull with every release-version.
I just happen to like PFO's scope and design-intent much better (and the continuous world) else I would be camping there, just for the old school feel and nice graphics.
Also invested in Star Citizen, and thinking about pledging for Crowfall.
Camelot not so much, I need at least some serious PvE mixed in.

Crowfall has nothing close to what you might consider "serious PVE mixed" in. Crafting, although described as a major activity, is purely support for PVP. Gathering is only done on PVP worlds, and you only get to take a majority of what you gather / craft if your side wins the PVP battle.
It seems that a majority of the PVP guilds previously in Shadowbane, Darkfall and elsewhere are gravitating to it.

Good to know, Bluddwolf. I assumed the harvesting part to include fighting mobs, but if it's only harvesting then I am less interested.

I agree.
It just requires more complicated programming than sharding people.

It allows them to be more adventurous with their design than they could be with a single server/rule set. While it isolates players away from each other, it also isolates potential problems into a manageable space. Building a ruleset that ends up incredibly broken won't have particularly long lasting effects on the meta-game at large. There is value in both approaches.

There are mobs in Crowfall, but as in PFO they're not intended to be the primary content.
The team from Shadowbane watched server after server stagnate after one guild become unassailably dominant, and are deliberately designing Crowfall around the premise that if that's going to happen anyway you need to build the game to account for that tendency. So the reason there are multiple, temporary worlds is so that when one guild or faction wins their server they can blow it away and let everyone start over clean.
On a related note, my biggest concern with PFO from the very beginning has been a worry that the map is too small to prevent this from happening. It doesn't happen in Eve because the map is simply too big for a single alliance to effectively project force everywhere in the universe. That's not the case in PFO, and I don't see any reason why a single group couldn't win the map, nor why we shouldn't expect that it will indeed happen in exactly that way.

The greatest thing about Eve-Online is that if someone tells me they play, I know we're not just playing the same game but that we can interact with each other should we choose.
lol - though the interaction is as often as not scramming and Neutron Blasters to the face :D
On another note - why don't my craft buildings get those shady awnings to laze under like the pic in the article?

Yeah, Crowfall popped up out of nowhere, really surprising me.
I think a lot of the folks who are actually into PvP will stick around with PFO maybe for a little bit (while Crowfall isn't available to play) and just to casually see what direction PFO goes, and then probably jump ship en masse when Crowfall entires playable alpha/beta.
On paper, PFO really doesn't offer anything compelling to compete against Crowfall except one persistent map (that could be susceptible to stagnation) and the Pathfinder intellectual property.
It seems to me that Crowfall will actually do curtailed open-world PvP better than PFO because you will probably be generally safe in the Eternal Kingdoms, and you have to actively go to and opt into the campaigns to be vulnerable to serious PvP.

As an old NWN player I get the appeal of the intimacy that a player community of 500-1000 can have. I guarantee that as PFO grows some of us will miss the good 'ol days when you kinda knew everybody's name.
Right now I'm yearning for the challenge of single shard tens of thousands, but I could see myself going back to my roots in a game like Shards.

Maybe instead of talking about ditching PFO for some other game you could talk up PFO. This thread is a boost for PFO.
It doesn't require a loss of confidence in PFO to interest me in the other games out there.
Many PvPers (especially in passive xp games) play multiple games.
I've never been in a PvP guild where there weren't people playing OTHER games, while staying in voice-comms just waiting for a poke about news of juicy targets or incoming invaders or some hapless friend/ally needing rescue.

@Gol, I'm always careful with the English language you (s.) and you (pl.) the auldie "one" sounds off even though it's right and feels weird to use. But the you (s.) is personal secondary perspective etc and is easily misunderstood. At least "one" keeps it impersonal even if old-fashioned sounding. "One does not simply walk into Mordor..."
It's a good list. And even if KS has had some big issues goes to show compare that list to a few years back and people would rip your hand off...
The red-hot leader is oc Star Citizen. Expect it will be epoch-defining. The dark horse imho is PFO. Both shards and crowfall get a lot right and I'd guess depend how much they become modding communities.
PFO needs longer than all the others to get there, but it could be much more Game Of Thrones than all of the others.
Crowfall has a really strong pitch showing the game with voxels already.
