TNG is the best hands down. Voyager hurt my mind. DS9 was too political for my taste. I am one of those rare people who LOVED Enterprise.
It must burn haters that it's still considered canon in the JJ-reboot.
TOS I tried to watch too old and couldn't stomach the crappy effects, although I watched the best episodes, like the one where Kirk kissed Uhura.

I was actually less worried about the crossguard than how "unrefined" the blade looked. It looked like it was using an unstable crystal or something.
My guess is, since the Sith are supposedly extinct at the end of Episode VI, that this new lightsaber was constructed by some self-trained dark jedi wannabe in his mom's basement or something, like a neo-Nazi trying to equip himself in Third Reich gear. Maybe all he could get was a substandard crystal from the local pawn shop?

Nah, Berman and Braga killed Star Trek with Voyager. It got resurrected in season 4 of Enterprise for a time, until they put the last nail in the coffin with its last episode (which was just a big f*** you to the fans).

But I love conversations...
Who would have watched the two hour interrogation of princess leia by darth vader and a certain floating black ball interrogation droid with pointy needle?
I love Dr. Ball, M.D.!

Hmm,
I liked the new movies as well...well the first one at least. The second one I enjoy if I silence my questioning mind.
As far as ST series...my favs probably go
TNG > TOS > VOY > DS9 > TAS > ENT
I think before the Dominion War, DS9 was perhaps the most boring of the series to me. If it had ended at season 4 (like Enterprise did) it would probably be the worst of the list for me. That's an interesting though though, ENT was starting to get better during the third and fourth seasons...who knows, perhaps it would have turned out as well as DS9 if it had continued for the full 7.

DS9 is where Star Trek fandom goes to die.
haha my hardcore trek fans hated the fact I loved DS9. They cheered for voyager which felt like a dozen steps backwards. All trek series have been the galaxy through the federations eyes. Finally, we got to see how the galaxy sees the federation. So there is some truth to what you're sayin.
I tried ENT but as much as I love Bakula he wasnt a great captain. Writing might have had a lot to do with it. Also, that corny ass southern boy engineer made the show unwatchable.

I thought Enterprise was dismissed as canon by itself, declaring that the whole thing was a holonovel. That series managed to anger the hardcore fans so much that unrelated science fiction got killed over it. (Threats of outright refusal to watch anything featuring those producers - sight unseen - by a large number of Trek fans)
But you picked an important TOS episode to highlight, Network TV's first interracial kiss IIRC. And the story behind that one is pretty funny. NBC was going to force them to film with and without the kiss and decide at airtime (meaning with 100% certainty without). Therefore, Shatner purposely messed up every single without the kiss attempt.

I tend to agree. DS9 was boring to me until the Dominion War, and once Enterprise started to get away from the Time War and that weird planet of the multiple-anthropoid-species-of-uninspired-nomenclature storyline (and that last might have been part of the Time War? I forget), it got really good. They started moving more in the direction of classic Trek stories, and it improved vastly. Plus, their Andorians were the best in the series thus far.
I never warmed to Voyager at all, though. The storyline was very much a missed opportunity all around to me, and the actors and writing less than inspiring.

To Op:
I guess I could see it working if the style of use was more deliberate and direct, instead of the usual lightsaber twirly-ness. As for defending with it; I think it would involve moving your blade to the side quickly and suddenly to block with one of the side spurs, while continuing the movement with your body and making the central, longer blade into a downward chop.
Sort of a catch, sidestep draw, execution chop sort of defense.
It definately should not be a highly twirly style as a base, but could include some close proximity 'punch' motions, since the opponent might be focused on the main blade.
Come to think of it, the presence of the two additional spurs might also be enough to distract someone from your main blade, since now they need to keep account of three lasers.

Scorpion was scary as hell. A dozen Borg cubes blow past voyager like it was nothing, and we find Borg body part harvesting aliens pouring into the trek universe. There was something friking unnerving about that that disapointed me to no end when they made it all aliens with a story. I would have loved to have watched borgspace implode into an expanding alien horror.

I loved Voyager in spite of some really bad episodes.
What made Voyager better for the most part than Enterprise was the fact that the bad parts were short in length and could be forgotten... mostly. Whereas in Enterprise the worst bad part was the central plot line of the whole show revolving around a stupid time war. That and Voyager was far easier to watch with new episodes airing twice in the week in case you missed recording it. While I could only see Enterprise one time during the week on a station that frequently interrupted it. Meaning I didn't actually see all of it till years later on DVD.
If you stripped out the "time war" and restructured the shows seasons it would have been awesome... even despite the canon violations.

Considering the mutilation of Star Trek for which he's responsible, you're quite the optimist.

Oh, good lord. Into Darkness was easily as bad.

Nope. Jar-Jar, midichlorians, and the terrible acting of Hayden Christensen is far worse than Into Darkness.

Agree, Voyager has some great points, especially after they got away from the Kazon and Seska. Year of Hell was pretty awesome, as was Scorpion.
Year of Hell was a great episode (ETA: Well, two-parter), but I think they should have gone full bore and made it its own season. Though I can understand them shying away from that as they already had DS9 as the "darker" Trek show at the time.

It's a more interesting conversation than lightsaber nerdrage at any rate. :)
Heh. I am amused by people bringing science into a discussion about Star Wars, personally. In a world where ghosts talk, certain people can do the impossible by waving their hands, space fighters maneuver like they are in the atmosphere, a sword is better than a gun, and dozens of other such things, what sets people off is a crossguard on a sword made out of light?

Ugh.
Those are nice too. I also am wearing a Browncoat over my SG1 fatigues.
I really like the final seasons of SG1 that is basically Farscape 2.0.
Rynjin |
Much as I love my man Browder, the final seasons of Stargate SG-1 were nowhere near as good as the earlier seasons, and neither achieved the awesomeness of Farscape. Farscape is by far my favorite Sci-Fi series of all time.
I still watch re-runs on the weekends on Pivot sometimes. Holds up very well.

I did enjoy DS9, especially pre-Worf Dax and pre-Odo Kira, but it really didn't start to figure out how to do war and politics until B5 was already getting good. And for all the ups-and-downs of the plots, none of them--Trek, Wars, or B5--have yet reached the excellence of Farscape's characters and their development.
I like to pretend Babylon 5 only had 3 seasons. One and Five are pretty awful, and season one episode two is the worst single episode of a sci-fi series I have ever seen. It was so bad I almost never watched another B5 episode, which would have been a shame because the Shadow War was fantastic.
I dunno. Season One is a bit of a slog, but it lays down a lot of necessary foundation for the great plotting to follow.
I'm confused though... there was no Season Five though. I heard rumors of tentative planning for a fifth season (and of spin-offs involving the Rangers or somekind of Drak plague) but nothing ever came of those. Nope. Nada. Zilch.

Them's fightin' words, pard.
Granted the first half of season 1 is a bit slow, but from at least Nerve on it's great, and before that it certainly wasn't "boring".

Sadly much to the utter dismay of the Fivers, Scapers, Browncoats, and Gaters those universes have ended. They only live on in reruns. While Star Trek and Star Wars are continuing settings with fresh new opportunities to be awed or enraged depending on the situation. Lets face it when a Federation Dreadnought faces off with an Imperial Star Destroyer in orbit they will be doing so over the lifeless ruins of Babylon 5, an old star gate, a crashed hulk of a Peacekeeper carrier, and some Reaver and Alliance wrecks.
Long Live Warsies! Long Live Trekers!

~idly wonders what a cross universe movie would look like~
Two directors Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams team up for the ultimate show down as two universes collide; Star Trek and Star Wars together at last!
OK Whedon hasn't directed either but I think those two would make a great movie team up of directors.

Some might say (some of) those shows ended before they had the chance to taint what had come before it with declines in quality.
That said there's a Farscape movie in the works involving something with Crichton's son so we'll see if I eat those words.
Well, almost.
They DID have SG:U which was really really really boring, and though it picked up during the second half of season 1, it still was very very very boring.
They took a dramatic situation that would take around 5-15 minutes and dragged it out for the full show. At least it wasn't like the first part of season one where they took 5 minutes of drama and stretched it out over 3 shows.
I have never seen B5, but did ask for it for Christmas so we'll see.
