As Ryan mentions in today's blog, GW wants to trial this quickly when EE starts. Lets give them an idea how many of us are ready to stress the OS X client whenever they call on us.
I am :)

I can tell you this right now: Only 6 or 7 of the ~150 respondents to the survey said that OS X is their primary gaming OS. That said, I didn't ask how many folks play on Macs, so there could be a lot of bootcampers. Also, I was one of those 6 or 7...
I'm also a bootcamper and more than happy to play it in both OS's just to see how they compare :)

well yes. Needing a new machine as my Mac is old, I can buy a new PC (done, now trying to figure out what it can do) and play, not buy anything and not play, or buy a $2000 Mac and wait 6 months to play.
So I put down PC as primary, because it was the only choice to PLAY the game PfO.

Ryan has consistently stated that the Mac client was a priority of his to get out as close to EE as possible. I had made a comment in another thread that I thought the Mac client would be delayed, based on no evidence but my own assumptions and experience with Mac versions of games. If that impacted on your purchase choices, then I apologise.
I am amazed, and very pleased with Goblinworks' dedication to making this game available on Mac OS X so early, and I'd like to do what I can to help with that. And when Ryan says he intends to do something in the future, I won't doubt that it will happen :)

Considering that it's the only way that James Jacobs will play.....

Ryan had said that Mac client in EE but not at beginning. equivalent Mac is 2x the price of thin PC clients. !k to get PC and now desk top is dieing. 2K for new desk top would have been good, but not sure I knew Mac was having disk fan problems. Not lethal yet.
What is hackingtosh? how does it compare to parallels?

A hackintosh is when you have a non-apple computer running Mac OS X. Parallels lets you run a Windows virtual machine under Mac OS X, where as a hackintosh lets you build your own computer and have it run the Mac OS. Mine I have set up so it can boot into Windows or Mac, so it is more like a reverse boot camp (Windows primary that can boot into Mac).
They can be challenging to get working but there are a few places with guides. I would not recommend it if you aren't very good with computers.

Bootcamp is a free functionality added to OS X by Apple to allow you to partition your hard drive and install a copy of Windows that you own on it. It provides a basic setup to walk you through the process, gets you drivers so your "Apple" hardware works with Windows, and installs a Control Panel in Windows to simplify how you switch back and forth.
Main difference from Parallels is there is no virtualization, so some argue it's biggest benefit is you get the most out of the hardware you have. Downside is that there is no communication between your Windows setup and you Mac - they are effectively like 2 separate machines. I use Dropbox to send files between them, whereas my understanding in Parallels, you can drag and drop.
I am not a computer guy, but for Alpha I managed to go out and get a copy of Windows for $109CAN, and get it setup using Bootcamp in one afternoon. Took two tries after I screwed up one step. Workikng well now. It has for some reason made Waking from Sleep take minutes as opposed to instantaneous on the Mac side.

Next time I hear someone type the desktop is "dieing" AND MISPELLING IT TO BOOT!, I may reach out across the net, and strangle them with their own mouse cord, and beat them to death with the keyboard for good measure.
The desktop is not dying. What we are seeing is that uses that really don't require a workstation being farmed out to more appropriate machines such as tablets and other intelligent devices. There will still be a lot of tasks that are best done with the combination of monitor, mouse, keyboard, and perhaps a stylus as well. Those configurations will be known as desktops even if the components change in minor degree, such as the new Macs having no floppy, optical, or hard drives, just flash storage. They simply will never go back to being the only game in town.

Oh... never mind... what a waste of a perfectly good rant. I'll have to save that for another occasion. Although the bit on spelling stands. :)
Fans are pretty cheap purchases. My favorite places to get them are Tiger Direct or Micro Center, both good places to shop for parts, especially the latter. I'm going to be making a trip to Micro Center in Paterson to do some mod shopping. Replacing a fan on a Mac though, might be a bit more complicated, but Mac parts can be found on Ebay for good prices.

A Tease from Ryan
Yeah, I played for a few minutes last night on Ryan's machine before heading home for the night. Ryan doesn't have a very high end Mac and it did pretty well. I am hoping to test it out on my high-end Mac today perhaps. Pretty exciting though to actually have a Mac build!

@Lisa,
Thanks for keeping a close eye on game development and dropping by to comment on things. Just out of curiosity, since Ryan is an important part of GW success, do you know why he doesn't have a spiffy new Mac? Is he holding out for a new model, or just waiting to add it the his wish list on the next office Christmas party? :)

We pinch pennies. :) My work Mac is actually my personal property. :)
Eventually I'll put a Mac Pro on my desk but there's no good business case for me to do that yet.
Except of course the fact that you would need it to test the Mac client.
Just sayin'.
I just got my invitation to join the Alpha test on Friday. I was disappointed that I have to use Windows at this point.
Add me to that list. After being told that I'd be able to play the game on my Mac and not have to shell out for (or boot in to) a Windows machine to play the game, I was frustrated, to say the least.
Remind me again why you guys aren't doing a Single Back End Library, Multiple Front End client like other cross platform MMO's? I'm not being a jerk with that question - it's a legitimate concern that I've voiced before and never once had answered.
Yes, I think the Mac version will be made available before Alpha ends.
Glad to hear it. I'd have liked it to be simultaneous Alphas, but it'll be nice to see and test out.

I am in the Beta that starts on October 30. I use a mac and, based on the reading on goblinworks understood that the game was going to be both on MAC and PC. Unfortunately, they do not have the MAC client available as of October 17, so I am going to be using bootcamp on my MAC to play/test the game starting on October 30. The second the mac client is available for testing, I am abandoning the bootcamp and using MAC only.
