Introduce me to new Game worlds for D&D

Gamer Life General Discussion

Hi there, I'm trying to find well supported game worlds in which to choose from, using D&D as my game of choice. I'm familiar with all of the WOTC worlds and the Pathfinder world. Are their any other worlds you would recommend me checking out?

- Ideally the world I settle on would still be in print.

- Have excellent color maps with a lot of detail.

- Regional books to support the world or one super-awesome overall book that covers the kingdoms and other places of interest.

I'm not looking for a world that doesn't mesh well with the D&D classes. I don't want to have to change class names or other real basic information.

Anybody recommend some links?

Which version of D&D?

There are a ton of worlds but in print is the tricky part.

I'm partial to Freeport from Green Ronin. Huge focus on a former pirate island trade city with Cthulhu themes. Lots of adventures and sourcebooks and conversion sourcebooks for different systems (3.5, Pathfinder, Castles and Crusades, + non d20/D&D ones) The main book is a massive sourcebook on the city with some world info.

I like Goodman Games' Gazetteer of the Known Realms which is a huge fairly classic style D&D setting with neat history (ancient empires of sphinxes and nagas). Goodman has tons of stuff for AD&D, 3.5, and 4e in modules and sourcebooks, though not so much for regional sourcebooks.

For something different there is Goodman's Dragonmech for 3.5 post apocalyptic D&D mecha with steampunk. Out of print but Paizo has one of the regional expansion books on sale super cheap in print.

Iron Kingdoms from Privateer Press is a stylish fantasy wargame world with steamjacks, troll factions, some guns, corrupting megadragons, neat nation factions, druid beast masters, necroconstructs, and more. Originally designed for 3e and 3.5 they now have their own house system but they have massive beautiful flavor filled setting books and even the miniature wargame books can be raided.

I also think Fantasy Flight Games' Warhammer FRP 3e and the out of print 2e with their grim dark chaos dominated fantasy setting make a fantastic D&D setting and it has tons of regions developed in sourcebooks.

Tons of excellent out of print settings, for instance Scarred Lands, now available from Onyx Path and formerly from White Wolf's Sword and Sorcery d20 imprint, has a great post gods vs. titans war world designed for 3e.

Oathbound is a very Planescape like high power, high fantasy, setting with elements of Ravenloft (powerful entities grabbing other realms and characters and mashing them up in its world) for Pathfinder and 3e currently put out by Epidemic books for Pathfinder and formerly by Bastion Press and DragonWing Games for 3e and 3.5.

do you mean stuff like Eberron, Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk?

There's also Midgard by Kobold Press

Legendary Games has announced Legendary Planet, a sword and planet setting, but it's not out yet.

Also Frog God Games has a world which doesn't really have a campaign setting product yet, but all of their adventures are in the same world...someday they plan on having a campaign setting product.

I'll second Midgard. There is plenty of support, going back to the days of 3.0.

The setting's main area of detail draws a lot of its feel from eastern Europe, but overall, the setting is fairly diverse (much like Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms)...

The only drawback is that the setting book does not come with a separate poster-sized map.

Hello Eileen! Welcome back!

For what i know, i can't think of many Full Worlds out for PF setting beyond Golarion and ones listed above. There are Several reasonably sized 'Regions' that have functioned as a campaign mini setting.

Freeport mentioned above is one such example. Fire Giant Games's Evil AP Way of the Wicked would be one.

Razor Coast by Frog God Games, Slumbering Tsar are both reasonable sized continental regions. (Razor Coast is basically a Carribbian sea/island/coastal set.)

I'll throw others out as i can think of them.

Tolkien's Middle Earth?

Sounds like I got some previewing of new game worlds to look into. Thank you everyone. And it good to see you too Rathendar.

Dark Archive

+1 for the Scarred Lands setting.

Not a complete setting per se, but I really like Mor Aldenn City of Mages as a "droppable" location.
There's a very interesting bundle at RPGnow, that includes player supplements, monsters, etc.

also +1 for Midgard.

Bruce Heard's World of Calidar from the kickstarter will be out soon. It has a Mystara flavor and promises a Voyage of the Princess Ark feel with Skyships and all.

Supported settings...all the really good stuff is out of print and usually from earlier editions to boot.

Totally this one. Bruce Heard does amazing stuff.

I also suggest you find any old Mystara stuff you can because that setting is a lot of fun (my first thoughts upon reading the Inner Sea World Guide was "this is trying to be Mystara. awesome"). It's for BECMI/RC (with a couple of 2e attempts) but what you are really here for is the flavor, which is excellent.

Also, Planescape.

FFG's Dragonstar setting for 3.0, sadly OOP, was a wondeful mix of classic D&D and pulp SF with blasters and spaceships and robots and more.

Dark Sun, if you want harsh, brutal Barsoomian adventures.

Failing those, just go with Golarion.
