I think I changed mine... once?
Edit: Oh yeah, I used to use this one. Who remembers that?

I was going to change mine like I used to be fond of doing. But then this one looks eerily similar to me, and then I was the only one using it so I felt an obligation to keep using it. Now, there is one other person using it, and you know, I can't let them win, whoever they may be.
Ahem…

This is why I don't speak at family gatherings.

Don’t worry. I will use it responsibly.

Where's the FUN in that?

I've been reading Venus Envy lately. It's probably one of the most surreal experiences I've been through lately. The mind-trip of:
- This reads exactly like any other of the corny 2000s-era webcomics I read so many of as a kid, except it's about highly topical transgender issues that I didn't even know existed until the mid-2010s.
- This was written by Crystal Frasier, who, because I was so young when I joined the forums, I've always thought of as an elder, except she was in her early 20s when she wrote this. She was actually younger than I am now. I don't know whether that makes me feel really old or really young.
- Like most webcomics from that era, it pairs an extreme swerve into seriousness with, well, an abrupt Indefinite Hiatus right at the climax to the darkest storyline yet.
Reading it was sort of like a Bizarro Plane of Shadow version of my childhood special interest. I read a lot of corny webcomics back then. Even the really bad ones ones. Sluggy Freelance, Shlock Mercenary, Bruno the Bandit, The Whiteboard, Zebragirl--I only developed a sense of "good webcomic" and "bad webcomic" and started curating my collection later on. Mainly as a consequence of reading Bruno the Bandit and thinking, "Okay, so what was the point?"
That said, I do kind of recommend Venus Envy if you have any nostalgia for those kinds of webcomics. It gets extremely heavy at points (there's a sexual assault scene), and it does end extremely abruptly, but it's a fascinating little time capsule and it's full of that charming early-2000s webcomic melodrama.

Alright, so while Venus Envy was originally being published in the early 2000s, I was a baby trans. I, like Crystal, was in my early 20s when I discovered the strip. Somewhere around 2004-2005, so it had a decent backlog for me to catch up on. Despite still being in the closet, I read it pretty religiously for years.
Eventually, the long hiatus you mentioned happened, presumably because Crystal was already working for Paizo at that point and didn't have time for a webcomic anymore.
Around the time the comic ended (2012-2014 with the year gaps between those final strips), I had discovered Pathfinder, and by proxy had discovered Crystal. I had no way of knowing that Erin Lindsey and Crystal Frasier were the same person, but now I was an out trans woman, and I thought it was rad that a trans woman was adding so much to my favorite RPG.
It was years later on Twitter that Crystal revealed that she was the one behind Venus Envy, and suddenly a large chunk of my life just clicked into place and made sense.

Aw, that's so sweet! I can totally imagine how bizarre that would be to discover. It's a real Cicierega moment, like finding out popular Youtuber Jenny Nicholson was once one of the most influential fancreators in the entire My Little Pony fandom, or that the same woman who wrote the anti-Open Floor Plan article I've been linking everyone for two weeks is the creator of the McMansion Hell blog. Okay, granted, that last one's pretty niche.

That's what the doctor's told you about the scalpel!
Now one of us is stuck in a jar of formaldehyde, relegated to a hidden corner of the closet, and only brought out when you want to freak out the norms.
Responsibly is no way for an alias to live!

I just want to say that I have massive appreciation for Rysky, who has been active in these arguments since the beginning and is probably even more tired than I feel. Being outspoken and unapologetic tends to earn you a lot of heat, and she's taken it in stride and always found time to offer positivity, hugs and support to others who are also feeling the burn. They are a huge part of why I'm still here on these forums.
