This site, I swear to goodness gracious. There is such a bounty of new, non-toxic gamers entering the hobby and revitalizing it, but it feels like every time we get a "TAZ wave" of young, diverse gamers, we also get an identical wave of angry gamebros to complain about Shardra, determined to keep things exactly the same—no matter what the implications or cost to the hobby as a whole.
Fandom problems, y'all. Fandom problems.
I've noticed an uptick in positivity in the last few months, granted I've barely skimmed the playtest threads (I'm not all that enthusiastic for it).
But elsewhere there seems to be less aggression.

Maybe, but it still seems whenever somebody so much as implies there might be a problem connected to social justice or "political correctness", the exact same mob of interchangeables surfaces to play societal defense.
Then again, I haven't been on the forums much in the last few months.

On a positive note, I reread Wormy recently via one of the online archives. It's still amazing. I'm not sure about the imp's design, but, like, damn, that comic was beautiful. There's nothing else quite like it. It's so meanspirited at times (it was the original "from the monsters' POV" comic), but it's also got such a weird mix of heart and Calvin and Hobbes/Bone-level artistic chops.
And it sure did end abruptly—just as things were heating up. Makes me wanna go back and reread that article in the Final Dragon Issue. I kinda love the way it ended, honestly. That unresolved mystery and promise matches well with the comic that seamlessly blended an air of modernity and familiarity with strangeness and wonder.

Yeah, when I was branded a racist <expletive> for stating that I treated everyone equally, the way I would want to be treated, was when I decided it was time to just hide all political and social threads (and any threads where any such discussions started) and move on...
Context does matter in situations like that, so I can't speak to whether or not you were justified in what you were saying. That said, insults like that generally suck. Not useful to anything.

Right. Well, it was one of the usual racially-charged discussions, and I was pointing out that one of the greatest compliments I ever received was when an African-American student said, "You know why you're such a good teacher? Because to you, I'm just another student."
She was SOOOOO grateful that I didn't knock myself out trying to figure out how to behave towards her, but that I just treated her exactly the way I'd treat anyone else, be they black, white purple, transgender, or whatnot. (And needless to say, that was with kindness, patience, and compassion, and working with her to figure out the best way for HER to understand the problems I was trying to teach her.)
I think a lot of minority groups really appreciate that approach: I chaperone high school trips, and many of the transgender students "mysteriously" end up in my groups. Because to me, they're just people. I don't treat them any differently than anyone else.
And ooooh, did I touch a live wire when I said that out loud...

I'm really not trying to side against you in this conversation with a third party I've never met, but my point is that I'd have to know what it was in response to (or what it seemed to be in response to). Like, that's a great approach to teaching in general, but it might have come across very differently if, say, it was used as a rebuttal about how some minorities might need accommodations.
Like, "I treat everyone the same" is great if we're talking about discrimination, but it comes across differently if we're talking about affirmative action or disability.
I'm not endorsing that person's response regardless. Like I said, it's just mean and useless to lob insults like that.
Yep. I know. I appreciate your approach. It's all too easy to see one person's side and say, "Wow, they make sense! They must be right!"

I was just generally agreeing with your overall impression that getting involved in those threads is just likely to get you burned.

Liz Courts always said to try to assume everything is said in as positive a way as possible and plan your response accordingly. :-)

I don't have any good thread for this and it's not worth starting a new one, but basically, Mike Mearls has been up to some bullshit. And while that's incredibly disappointing, and it's frustrating that Wizards of the Coast is still employing a man who doxxed his own employees when they tried to seek his help...
... it's also fun to note, in an incredibly petty way, that his adventure in Age of Worms, "Three Faces of Evil", is arguably the hardest of all of them to run due to what a poorly-communicated disaster it is.
Yay, another reason to boycott WotC.
On the one hand, I agree that the situation sucks and it definitely doesn't look good on either company (Paizo gets its own callout further down, courtesy of ex-employee Jessica Price, who... well, again, it sucks what happened and why she quit/was fired, but on the other hand, I'm not personally shedding any tears over her absence).
On the other, I can't support how the thread further down declares all "nerd culture" to be inherently part of toxic masculinity. I get the people involved are hurt and frustrated, but that's throwing a lot more people under the bus than just WOTC and Paizo.

I'll just emphasize that "nerd culture" doesn't necessarily mean "every individual nerd", just like saying "American culture has a problem with alcohol" doesn't mean you're saying literally every single American is an alcoholic.
I love this thread too much to see it destroyed, so I'll just leave it at that. I actually agree that the phrasing is a bit confusing and they don't need me to defend them.
Oh, also, Jessica Price kicks ass. I'll leave it at that, too.
But yeah, WotC and Paizo are both kind of messes. It's, like, 55% of why I no longer go to Paizocon. I had a parasocial relationship with a company and it's like, hey, KC, it's a company. A for-profit, privately-owned company. Speaking logically, it's probably screwing someone over. Don't make friends with companies.
Besides, small publishers are way more creative anyways. I got a game for Christmas about sad doomed cowboy penguins. It's great. Small RPGs are great.
