How much water dose a waterskin hold?

As far as I can tell they weigh 4lbs empty, but the book has nothing about how much it can hold.

Ultimate Equipment says that a medium waterskin holds about 1/2 of a gallon of liquid.

And that 4 lbs weight is full of water. It's only 2 lbs empty.

Which, of course, doesn't make sense, because a 1/2 gallon of water weighs 4lbs. 2lbs empty + 4lbs of water = 6lbs full, not 4.

A canteen only weighs 1lb and costs 2 gold. So that would be 5lbs.

Which is about right for a waterskin container irl that would hold 1/2 gallon. They don't weigh much at all. How much does an empty 1/2 milk carton weigh? Waterskins don't weigh much more than that.

Where is this quote from? 1 gallon per day seems excessive for a universal rule. You need much less than that to continue to function.

If you are extremely active, or in high temperature environments and whatnot, that makes more sense. But, sitting around in a nice cool 70 degree library all day? 1 gallon seems very excessive.

In the real world the mayo clinic suggests 3 liters (.8 gallons) per day. However, if your outside working you can easily double that.

As someone who has worked in trailers pitching freight in 120* I can tell you workload and environment really make a huge difference. You can drink 1/2 gallon in an hour.
