ACG Swashbuckler, Slashing Grace and... Bastard Swords

Advice

Hi Folks,

so, I have a character that uses the Swashbuckler class from the playtest along with the slashing grace feat, he has been using a longsword, but had wondered at the possibility of using a bastard sword instead... If I were to burn a feat to get proficiency with a bastard sword, could I then use the slashing grace feat from the ACG to count it as a 1 handed piercing weapon for use with all swashbuckler class abilities (including the swashbuckler version of weapon finesse).

And if I could, would it be worth it?

(originally he was a Cad Archetype fighter, using an elven curved blade, but the swashbuckler doesn't allow for that weapon in any way currently (hope it will change) but the classes agile fighting style and parry-riposte mechanic is exactly how I imagined this guy to fight)

other notes... I have no desire to use a rapier or scimitar, neither weapon fit the image I have, nor the model that perfectly sums up how he looks (the models sword is pretty long, which is why I'm thinking bastard sword might be cool, but trying to weigh up the pros and cons mechanically too)

Choose one type of one-handed slashing weapon.
Prerequisites: Dex 13, Weapon Finesse, proficient with
chosen weapon.
Benefit: When wielding your chosen weapon one
handed, you can treat it as a one-handed piercing weapon
for all feats and class abilities that require such a weapon
(such as swashbuckler’s precise strike). The weapon must
be one for your size.

Nothing in the feat would prohibit it from working with a Bastard Sword or Katana used one-handed.

the main negative I can see is that it does a good job of ensuring you cannot use it two handed 'in a pinch' as if you're a dex based character (mine is..) you'll be unable to benefit from even using dex to hit anymore.

currently he has a longsword and piranha strike along with weapon focus, extra panache, combat reflexes and slashing grace.

FYI, he's actually got a number of wizard levels and in his first fight (where he was solo) he managed to survive and win against 4 enemies with about 50hp each and 3 attacks each, wasn't allowed to buff before fight as he got ambushed, but using haste, mirror image and heroism with the above seemed to work pretty well

1: Yes
2: No.

5 people marked this as a favorite.

First rule of Bastard Swords on Paizo Boards:

Don't talk about Bastards Swords.

Second rule of Bastard Swords on Paizo Boards:

DON'T TALK ABOUT BASTARD SWORDS!

With how crit happy the swashbuckler is you would better off with a katana. Mechanically is it worth it? Not really. Is it flavorful to 'fence' with a bastard sword - hell ya.

Piranha Strike doesn't work with a long sword. It must be a light weapon for it to function.

Long term, katana is better, short term, bastard sword is better

Didn't expect this to be necro'd.

Funny that it was, I'm using a Monk 2/Swashbuckler 1/Cleric 2-->17 right now...maxing dex and wisdom, have amateur gunslinger since I dumped cha to add to panache.

It's working exceptionally well, pick up crusader's flurry next, so I'll be able to flurry of katanas with my +6 dex mod. Need a keen one or improved critical to make it really hurt.

Why not just get a guided weapon enchant?

'cause the question was about combining slashing grace with weapon finesse as not a swashbuckler. scorpion whip was the only way I found.

Silver Crusade

Just remember, if you do this you are effectively giving up a feat for 1 damaged per attack. When you think about it, it's probably not worth it.

Surely, excluding slashing grace - playing a Half Elf makes it not as prohibitive a move?

Which, if you want to burn a feat on EWP, I'd say is league preferable to anything else.

Silver Crusade

I was assuming he was using Slashing Grace with the longsword as well. Going from 1d8/19-20/x2 to 1d10/19-20/x2 is only an average increase of 1 damage per attack.

And this is a character he already has going, so unless he happened to be a half-elf, he can't magically change into one.

here's a good question, does slashing grace allow you to use weapons finesse on the chosen weapon i.e. a Saw-tooth Saber?

Ok, I gotta ask since I've seen it mentioned/referenced on so many threads: What's with the whole "don't talk about bastard swords on the forums" thing?

With a level of Swashbuckler it would. Without a level of swash it works on two weapons that I know of - the whip and the Aldori Dueling Sword.

Threads like this make blackbloodtroll cry himself to sleep.

Note to BBT: Not meant as an insult, just humor

Scorpion whip is a light weapon, so you can't use it with Slashing Grace.

Just use a regular whip. It's slashing and one-handed. Or a sword cane.
