I just found my favorite item so far. It's creative, clever, clear, and short, and has great mechanics, too. It had a few minor formatting errors, but it still went right to the front of the pack. The core idea was just right.
You know you like it if you think, "I wish I would have thought of that."
I'm guessing I've cast around 600-700 votes, and it's the first time I've seen it.

Alright, time for a mini-rant. I don't know how many people will actually see this, but here we go. Please be more general in describing items. If I can read your post and know not more-or-less which item it is but rather exactly which item it is, that could be a problem.
Essentially we are venting here, blowing off steam so that we can continue in the important task of rating items. There is nothing wrong with that, but it is largely negative and derisive. If you are the poor individual that immediately recognizes his or her item being shredded, this could be very demoralizing. Because they can't defend their item they have to sit there and take what may seem as a personal insult over and over again.
And they can't fight back. Their hands are tied by the rules of the contest. In a way we are having someone hold their arms behind their back while we land a punch to the stomach. Not cool.
Now all that said, most of the criticisms here have been valid. We just have to make sure we wait until after the Top 32 reveal before being more open. And wait for someone to be brave enough to ask for advice.
To those who feel discouraged or hurt by the way your item is being described: please check out THIS THREAD. It will really help. Also we are in general much more caring of feelings when we actually critique items a week after the Top 32 reveal.
Somewhere in each item is a really interesting design idea that may or may not have been properly executed. It's the items, not the designers, that we are targeting in this thread. Most of us are in the same boat: we have heard some disparaging remarks that could apply to our submission.
It may be hard to hear, but it is not meant as a personal attack. THAT is why we have to keep the identifiers as vague as possible. When we get specific, it becomes personal. I've been reviewing my posts and there have been a couple where I got close to the line. I'm going to watch myself carefully from now on.
Anyways, just my take on it. Keep on venting and voting. Just remember that someone actually worked on that submission and was brave enough to submit it. Have a heart. :)
TLDR: Please be as general as possible when describing items anywhere on the messageboards. We want people to feel good about this contest.

A couple of items make me sad. The writing is good, the flavor is cool but it's an item that just wouldn't really be used by an adventurer. Ultimately Pathfinder is about heroes and their adventures. While an adventurer may have collected many magical items that assist in the mundane portion of their lives, the items that are written about in stories are the ones that help them kill monsters or overcome challenges when adventuring. A magic threshing machine that increases crop yield (not a real item, I just made this up) is not what I am looking for in RPGSS. A magical dental chair that allows me to fill people's teeth faster and without novocaine (see previous made up item note) is neat but not RPGSS worthy and imho a designer that has missed the point of the competition.
I prefer non-gonzo non-combat wondrous items that help players/parties overcome RP problems or assist them. As an actor for my entire life, RPing NPC interaction has always been a strong suit of mine; however many people are not very good at that part of the game, even if it is their favorite part! I prefer items that assist those players.
Our games usually have a lot of puzzles, traps or riddles so I also like items that assist with that aspect of the game without breaking the rules too much or creating a GM headache.
And of course we have combat as well, but that is what weapons and armor are for. The farmer, merchant, miller, tinker, barrister, etc. portions of our career take place outside of our game time and have little to no impact on the campaign. In the few instances where they do, a magic item is still irrelevant.

Has anyone been gathering data on the item costs? It seems like there are an inordinate number of items that are way above even the metropolis purchase limit - even dropping the million-plus items, that would be kind of limiting for a GM, as far as managing party wealth...
I find myself voting for affordable items that are slightly less cool, simply because I could actually see them in play, instead of the awesome item that no one could ever buy or whose base price would take six months to a year to craft.

I like the golem! I shouldn't need magic items to create a town or base of operations. Our party claimed thistletop as our base of operatios and are in the process of making it over. That being said, we don't need magic items to do said makeover, that is why we hire NPCs. I would rather hire NPCs and support the local economy than do it with a magic item.

I just read the Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler biography and the description of conscription of labour by brahe on his little island was hilarious from the eyes of the bewildered peasants, many or whom moved off island for the decade. he built his house and observatory right in the middle of their commons for grazing and when he was gone the spent almost as much effort vandalizing the equipment as they had building it in the first place.

darn, my fave part is developing towns using ultimate campaign. i love the group negotiating of designing a community and having that magic threshing machine would help a little, perhaps a mediation of conflict golem?
Or maybe one of these would help? http://www.theonion.com/articles/city-councilman-unearths-magical-zoning-am ulet,1782/

Very well said.
I've tried to be vague, but have probably gotten too close to the line myself.
What I do want to say, though, to anyone whose item I have commented on is that I'm generally only picking out odd phrasing that strikes me as funny, which isn't intended to disparage the entry itself. More often than not...I then vote for that item.
Don't get discouraged. This is just another part of the process. Part of the gallows humor is that our items are in there too. I've already come to terms with the fact that my item may not be memorable enough to generate comments.

I have seen some great villain items which I do vote for, if I can stomach reading them.

You are far from alone. Kingmaker is a very popular AP and some of us grognards still admire the old 2nd ed style stronghold rules.
That said an item in Superstar has to have a certain level of flash to have the kind of mass appeal you need to get the upvotes. Someone who play the game like a "murder hobo: isn't going to see the value of that magical threshing machine unless they can armor it and start murdering hordes of orcs with it.

Some people do actually make the "evil adventuring party" thing work. Sometimes I have a player "hide" a villain in with the heroes and see if that character gains redemption or destroys the group from within.
I agree that the Superstar market should appeal to players/heroes first, but don't don't put your games back into the box they came out of...

That particular item reminds me of an item in the Night Angel trilogy written by Brent Weeks.
