Building Solomon Kane

Advice

Pretty interesting movie. Not sure exactly how to turn it into a character, much less an optimal one, but my thoughts...

6 levels of Lore Warden (fighter), 2 levels duelist. 4 levels weapon adept (monk). 5 levels of Inquisitor.

He dual wielded and parried a lot. Wore light or no armor. Hence the duelist route. The monk levels added for his time being an isolationist at the church. The inquisitor levels from his time after leaving the church.

Only question is

This would give increased skill pts and good bab from Lore warden, +wis mod to ac and ki pool from monk, parry from the duelist, Bane, judgments and +Wis mod to init from Inquisitor.

Human
1 - Improved Init
f1 - Two weapon fighting
f2 - Weapon Finesse
F2 - Combat Expertise (from Lore Warden)
3 - Dodge
f4 - Mobility
5 - Weapon Specialization: Scimitar
f6 - Improved Two weapon fighting
7 - Landing Roll
M1 - perfect strike (from weapon adept)
M1 - Double Slice
M2 - Weapon Focus
9 - Improved Critical
11 -
13 - Greater Two weapon fighting

Thoughts?

I'd actually say go Inquisitor, since the class was actually built around the concept of Solomon Kane.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yeah, straight Inquisitor sounds like the proper way to go to me as well. Solomon Kane is obviously the inspirational touchstone that they built the class around. In fact, the first time I ever laid eyes on the class my first thought was, "Yay! Now I can play Solomon Kane!"

Pure inquisitor, no arguments! Lol!

Inquisitor with the Gunpowder Inquisition definitely.

Yes but he was pure fighter when sacked the temple before he was shaken up. The monk levels I threw in because it would help ac and such tons being able to add wis mod (which the inquisitor needs). It also made sense as he was basically a recluse at a Church. Then clearly he became all inquisitor once he left.

I know going straight Inquisitor would work but I would think it would severely limit his fighting capacity and ability to melee as he should.

Right down to the iconic's wearing of Solomon's slouch hat, which I always took as a nod to him.

Is this the Kane from the movie or the books?
Edit: you mention the movie in the OP so i think that is what you want!
The feeling you May get from a inquisitor but he is no Spell caster. He uses several weapons but PF rewards specialisation. I think fighter or gunslinger is a good place to start and properly stay. A gunslinger with a pair of flintlock pistols and a rapiere and dirk. That is what i would do. But i am an old man and like the books Best;)

i'd say one level of gunslinger and then fighter to you know actually be competent at fighting. The inquisitor while flavorwise might match I dont remember him csting many spells...

Both his incarnations (Graphic Novels and Film) depict him praying/supplicating to God before doing something amazing. That sounds like Divine Spellcasting to me EsperMagic!

You all know that Solomon Kane is the invention of Robert E. Howard, and that he is the protagonist of short stories published in the early part of the 20th Century, right?

LOL

I thought the movie was pretty good for a low budget flick, but if you read the stories you know he is a badass Puritan with serious fighting skills, but no spells or spell-like stuff.

Cap. Darling has it right: fighter/gunslinger. Blades and guns.

Im just saying he might pray but he doesnt cast anything...EVER if im not mistaken.

Take a look at the spells True Strike and Lend Judgment. Those spells look like the results of Solomon Kane's prayers as described in this thread.

Exactly DK. Giving the film as an example: He's nailed to the cross, needs to get off it. He shouts "GOD, GIVE ME STRENGTH!" And then procedes to tear his nailed hand away from the cross. Divine Intervention/Spellcasting or act of faith. It's all so similar as makes little difference.

I think the solomon from film, book and comic is a non spellcaster at least til he gets the staff and it turns a bit to a side. But in a PF like World where spelcasting issens nessesary the work of the devil. I can see him as an inquisitor as well.
That is often the problem with göttingen inspiration from books and films, the characters is not born to a "magic is everywhere" World.

Judging simply by the original REH material, he's a fighter who happens to tote around a brace of pistols. He does most of his work with a rapier. I don't see the need for complicating him with spells, SLAs and the like, but you would probably load him up so he can shrug off enemy magic. In a highly magical game setting though, yeah, FTR/INQ seems the way to build him.

I see him as Super Genius Games' Justicar class, a non spellcasting, full BAB version of the Inquisitor.

Curious if anyone has any newer takes on this now that more classes and archetypes have come in the 8 years since. Saw the movie on a random watch the other night and I was seeing some Slayer,Gunslinger, Swashbuckler and possibly the aforementioned Inquisiotr type stuff, minus the spells.Thoughts?
