It appears that the show has finally turned a corner. I was incredibly pleased with this latest episode. Ward's acting was finally decent - with an explanation of why he was so wooden earlier. (Though that is a retcon, since we know that the actor wasn't told until mid-season.) Some of the lines were actually quite clever. I've grown to like Bill Paxton, who I felt was chewing too much scenery in the previous episodes; he's grown on me with his glee for the work. The line about a West Texas cheerleader cracked me up. I also really enjoyed that he didn't want to waste a good one-liner opening. Patton Oswalt was a good addition as well. The show's taking itself less seriously, which is a nice change of pace.
I've settled on the theory that Skye is actually a low-level telepath. Consider how many times they mentioned early on that there were no confirmed telepaths. What if it was a double red herring? Consider how people throw themselves to protect her, even acting out of character (Coulson okay with killing the guards at the hidden bunker). What if it was caused by an unintentional mental enchantment?

Yeah, Garrett's running high right now, but I don't see that as lasting.
1) None of those people particularly like him, excepting Ward. He's not doing wonders for earning loyalty, either.
2) Those last few seconds.
3) Garrett didn't send the "Out of the shadows into the light" message. He seems awfully lacadaisical about getting in touch with his HYDRA superiors.
4) Deathlok.
And, you know, he seems to have a need for the rejuvination serum. (Metal kidneys?) He's well on the road to being next season's Centipede-enhanced monster.

Yes! Loved the bit where he was talking to Raina. "I thought you weren't her type" and "I'm everybody's type". The man actually can change his facial expression!

Yeah, Garrett is making liberal uses of his Bluff skill. I think he's being over the top in self-declaring that he was the Clairvoyant (maybe he's the new "live decoy model" for the Clairvoyant... I know bad pun, but essentially, his mission right now could be "open recruiter" for HYDRA, and "keep telling everyone you're the Clairvoyant". I think Brad Dourif is due for a comeback! especially that it was Ward that "shot" him.... he he he)
Layers within layers... but bottom line: Arnim Zola. He's running that show right now, unless Red Skull has found a way out of the cosmic cube (he's been sucked in it right? can't remember the end of Cap 1.... :P )

I do find it interesting that Fury was able to touch the tesseract without harm.
But, my impression was that the cube killed the Red Skull, especially since Hugo Weaving has expressed his disinterest in reprising the role.

Fury was wearing gloves. I don't remember if The Red Skull was or not.

So this is where they start laying the threads for season 2, to turn Agents of SHIELD into the A-Team for the Marvel Universe.

I love how Agents of SHIELD just became Firefly. Clever, Whedon, very clever.
An unlikely group of highly specialized people led by a commanding officer who has a haunted past and recently saw the disintegration of the organization he so long fought for. Then there's the warrior woman who keeps her emotions under wraps. The engineer(s) who keep the bird in the air and the tech flowing and serve as comic relief. And, finally, there's the enigma who the badies are chasing both for what she knows and what she is.
If only Skye had a protective older brother and they leased part of their plane to a geisha....

Well the new guy (Triplett) has medical training and seems like the Papa Wolf / Big Brother archtype. And while he's no Inara, Ward could probably do a passable job as Jayne. We are still short wise older religious gentleman with an unspoken dark past though.

I always interpreted what happened to the Red Skull as being a result of the tesseract teleporting him somewhere. They might not want to use him again right away, but I am skeptical the MCU would kill off on his first appearance. He is one of the most iconic Marvel villains the MCU actually has the rights to use.
Anyway, my current impression is that Hydra might not be terribly unified right now, so I question whether it has a single leader. This is based on the ending of Winter Soldier as well as last nights AOS episode

This makes sense. It is a negative consequence of two heads growing to replace the one cut off. Hydra will become more and more fragmented.

Good for him! wouldn't it be funny if it is revealed that the was never "officially" admitted into HYDRA! lol! THAT WOULD BE TOTALLY HIM! "ya know, Ward, I saw an opportunity, and took it... that's right! I told those HYDRA suckas that I was now also HYDRA, and those who asked questions, I broke their noses... after a while they stopped asking about my membership card. Did I tell you how I shot that guy with a flare gun? I did? huh... ya sure?"

Word on the street however, is that the actor wasn't particularly keen on revisiting the part, so Skull may indeed have been Killed Off For Real. Zola himself is now on that perma-dead list as well, since his conciousness was stuck inside that old computer complex that was blown up by Hydra. Strucker's main rival at this point, is the Garrett-Ward teamup, assuming of course Madam Hydra doesn't make an appearance.

That just means recasting, which they have already done for Bruce Banner and War Machine. I don't think Marvel would hesitate for a second in bringing back Red Skull if they needed him or wanted to use him.

I agree 100% especially that since they did his "human face" origin story already, this would mean they could basically "recast" the Red Skull with the janitor down the hall and CGI his facial expression if he sucks at it...

As of this moment ABC has yet to announce ANY season renewals.
Pretty sure they won't for a while but I have no doubt the show will be returning.Ratings indicate they have reached who they wanted to reach and the show has outperformed every network except CBS (at least until the Voice began airing... but last week in the 9pm slot when they weren't against the Voice they retook that position.)
The show is regarded as one of the reasons for Capt. America's record breaking April opening weekend as well. They aren't likely to give up that advantage.
Though I have to admit I was surprised there was not an Agents of SHIELD trailer attached to the film. It's rare to do that for a TV show but it has happened and I kind of expected it given the relevance to the story.
Also of note: There was an article post on Whedonesque about the "format of Season 2" which noted that a mini-series for Agent Carter (of CA:TFA & the IronMan3 BR-1shot) was in the works and might be used as a mid-season filler during the next season of SHIELD. Again, still not announced or confirmed... but worthy of note to anyone doubting the probability of another season.
Regarding Skye...
She's not a telepath or anything else... yet. I do tend to lean toward the theory that we she "turns" she's likely to have a psychic ability because they've put SO MUCH EMPHASIS on explaining their are no psychics... but it'll probably go another way exactly because they've been leading us with that line all along.

While those series may have inspired it, the barbershop HQ of SHIELD is an actual thing from the comic books.

That's what I was thinking of. (It shows up in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes too.)
I was kind of amused that Hydra had, in addition to stealing all of their stuff, stolen the barbershop enterance too.
