My first thought was playing T.E. Lawrence :)
As I read this thread I realize that I am waaaaaaay behind in my reading source material. Maybe that 3 year hiatus from gaming (other than some nostalgic Living Greyhawk sessions) wasn't such a good idea...
Since I'm not very good at combat optimization, and since the last time I played a "churchie" I blew a turn attempt and mummies killed half of us (Savage Tides), I will probably stick to a smart skill-monkey.
I am now thinking an almost complete "fish out of water" concept. He's fairly ignorant of the land, the people, etc. But he KNOWS dungeoneering.

I ended up going with a Human Paladin of Anubis. He's a local who thinks that the tombs have been going long enough that some of the blessings may not be as effective as they once were. So he's putting a group together for the lottery so that he can make sure that the honored dead are still dead. So far it's looking like an interesting party.
Detect Magic |
Name: Jubare
Race: Human (garundi)
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Nationality: Osiriani
Class: Swashbuckler
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Jubare was born in a poor river village just south of Wati, the latest in a long line of bastard children fathered by bastard men. His parents, like their parents before them, were pirates, a lifestyle that Jubare took to with a passion. As a child, he made a name for himself by running with boys much older than himself. He learned to cheat and steal, to swim and climb, and made his first kill before he could even grow a full beard. But, that's how life is for the poor—a life Jubare wants nothing more than to escape.
After a falling out with his captain (and lover), Jubare headed north to try his luck as an adventurer. He knows full well that he might not survive a life of dungeon-delving, but at least then he might escape the jealous woman's wrath. Though he sleeps in the gutter, Jubare dreams of a future in which he might retire to a palace by the sea, where he might spend out the rest of his days his comfort, surrounded by a harem of beautiful women and exotic pleasures.
Detect Magic |
Human (Rahadoumi) Fighter (Tower Shield Specialist), exiled from Rahadoum after being assassinated and then subsequently resurrected by divine magic. I kind of encouraged him to flesh out this backstory idea specifically because of Salim from Death's Heretic.
This is awesome. I totally want to play this character.

Had another TPK, so I've replaced my cleric with a reboot of my first real D&D character, a N tieflingswordmagemagus who views intellect and magic as being superior to the mundane or brutish.
Hey Jig if you dont mind could you mention where y'all TPK'd for a second time? Spoiler if need be.

Ironically, we had one player absent, so her PC was "home sick" that day, so we technically had one survivor. ;)

The party I am GMing through this had some issues with the sandman initially due to 3/5 falling asleep from the initial burst after they started waking people though it went better and they pretty much kept it to 1 sleeping person on a given round at most.

So we're starting Mummy's Mask on 7/26 and I am still vacillating between which PC to play. It doesn't sound like my group is missing anything (and we're playing with a group of seven with the encounters scaled up a bit).
Its looking like there will be a sorcerer, an alchemist, a cleric, a ranger (twf), another ranger (bow), and an inquisitor (preacher archetype). Both the rangers will have some trapfinding/disable.
Initially I thought about playing a Dwarven rogue so that we had a dedicated trapfinder, etc. But the more I've thought of it I've had two more PC concepts sneak into the fray, and so I am wondering what my messageboard homies think:
1. Dwarven rogue (kind of a professional tomb raider guy)
2. Human two-handed fighter (recently released from prison and looking to reclaim lost honor)
3. Dwarven utility wizard. I just get a feeling that the a "tough" pragmatic dwarf with an ample spellbook might come in handy during this AP.
Thoughts?

Good saves will serve you well. My group has a cleric ( with 7 con and str), paladin, rogue and monk. They suffer in the knowledge and control areas, but saves have been key at times. Have your rangers read the players guide carefully, and perhaps your fighter would do well given the group, especially if he has good saves.
ithardin |
And so of course I've changed concepts and gone with:
Name: Rizzkahl T'Linnorza
Race: Elf
Class: Wizard (Conjuration)
Str 10 Dex 14 Con 12 Int 20 Wis 10 Cha 7
Improved Initiative
Warrior of Old Trait
Reactionary Trait
Greensting Scorpion Familiar
For the most part I followed the guidance in Prof Q and Treantmonk's guides to Pathfinder Wizards. The high initiative (+10) will help with utility/buffing/battlefield control.
He will most likely take Improved Familiar (Fairy Dragon) and Opposition Research (Necromancy).
With most of the other bases covered in our party, an aloof, tactical and pragmatic Elven Wizard should be fun to play.
Dreaming Psion |
Illinois Smith (gunslinger 1/bard X [archaeologist]) Famous treasure hunter, archaeologist, and part-time lecturer (has only 1 rank in Peform [Oratory].) Alternately skilled in the gun and the whip. his only known weaknesses include phobias of heights and snakes. ("Enough is ENOUGH! I have had it with these @#$%@##$$@#$ snakes on this @##@@$#$$#$@#%$% pyramid!")
Dreaming Psion |
Dorothea of the Gale (NG female human [homeland: Kan-Sas] druid [desert druid]) with dog animal companion named Toto
A traveler from some far-off land known as "Kan-Sas" (wherever that place may be), Dorothea of the Gale was first spotted stepping out of a vicious sandstorm. Stupefied, she nearly fell pray to a couple of gnoll slavers who happened to be passing on by after the cyclone passed. Dorothea instinctively called for somebody to assist her, and the desert answered her cry for help. Thus divinely inspired, Dorothea and her canine companion took the gnolls by surprise and escaped.

I'm planning to play Slayer, if my GM allows it.
Sakir Khonshu (LN male half-elf slayer) was a recruit to the Pure Legion in Rahadoum and he showed great promise both to the legion and to his parents, even though he was a bastard. But when he found out that his parents and future wife worshipped something called "Thoth", his world crumbled away. He was hesitant to report them. After one fateful night, when he confessed to his parents of his knowledge, the pure legion striked and her parents were captured and wife killed. Filled with righteous rage and divine power, he strike the enforcers down and fled from Rahadoum. He knows nothing of this god "Thoth", but Sakir feels his guidance and understands why his family prayed to him in moonlight.
In the necropolis of Wati, there might be answers.
Rosgakori Vendor - Fantasiapelit Tampere |
On the other hand, if the answer is negative, we have....
Javik Massani (N? male tiefling fighter [Two-handed fighter])is a orphan from the streets of Wati. Raised by whores, then abandoned to the streets, where Sczarni gangs gave him a job as a lookout. When the Sczarni were driven away by another gang called Sand Snakes, Javik joined them. When it looked like they were going to get offed as well, he abandoned the city and became a mercenary. Sons of Sobek, Golden Khopesh, and finaly the Legio of the Beast, were he was forced to attack innocent people and he panicked and fled to the desert wounded. After a ordinary family healed him, he chose never to kill innocents again. Javik may be from the worst that Osirion can offer, but he will not let it destroy what is best in him.
And he became a adventurer.

I have two main contenders right now.
1. Jaali al-Nethys, a NG Garundi human universalist wizard who is dedicated to Nethys to the point where he will either multiclass as a cleric of Nethys (destruction and protection domains) and eventually take the mystic theurge PrC, or will stay a pure wizard until he can take the Evangelist PrC from "Inner Sea Gods". I want to get GM permission to have his bonded item be a holy symbol of Nethys. A youngest son unlikely to inherit his family's holdings in Tephu, he became a novice librarian at the Great Library. Killed when desert bandits attacked a caravan of ancient arcane tomes en route to the Library, his and others sacrifices allowed the priceless tomes to reach their destination. In gratitude the Church of Nethys resurrected the slain, causing his once lax faith in the All Seeing Eye to become zealous and led to him dropping his prestigious family name for that of his god.
2. Baboucar Xefon-Ra, a NG Garundi human imperious bloodline sorcerer who found out his tribe may be descended from Hakotep I. Needing to know more about this forgotten pharaoh, he leaves his tribe to see what he can learn of the nature of this mysterious king. He is likely to take up with the Pathfinder Society and take the Pathfinder Chronicler PrC if they can offer him an avenue to learn the truth.

Looking to build a skill monkey healing/buffing cleric of Osiris for our upcoming Mummy's Mask campaign. Concept is a student of the old gods and history of Ancient Osirion. Converted cleric from Pharasma. I will be the healer/buffer and probably the face of the party.
Stats are currently (20 pt buy):
Str 8
Dex 12
Con 10
Int 16
Wis 16
Cha 14
I'm looking at Scroll Scholar and/or Ecclessitheurge as archetypes.
First level feats are Fast Learner and Improvisation.
Traits are Seeker and Devotee of the old gods.
I don't need to be a martial cleric as everyone else will have levels in a martial class.
Thoughts?
Thanks

Jiggy wrote:I'm making an arcanist (from the Advanced Class Guide playtest). He's a tinkerer/experimenter, curious about the workings of pretty much everything he encounters, both magical and mundane. He disables traps (via the campaign trait), invents his own spells (as much as the GM will allow), and has a low bar for what constitutes a good idea. A good portion of his hair is permanently pointing up and back as through frozen in mid-explosion, and most of his custom spells will look like things that he "invented" by failing in some other magical experiment and then writing the accident down in his spellbook.Aaaaand dead.
Next up is some sort of fighty divine caster. If only I could decide on specifics...
How did the lil gnome die?

Name: Eben Scourge
Race: Tiefling (raksasha)
racial heritage (ratfolk)
Gender: Male
Age: 36
Nationality: Osiriani
Class: paladin holy gun 2 / gunslinger mysterious stranger & gulch gunner 1 / fighter trench fighter 3 / ninja bandit 1
Alignment: "Justice"-Good
Think Gene Hackman in "the Quick and the Dead" kind of intimidating charisma
Clint Eastwood in "Unforgiven" kind of paladin; more Justice, less Law.
best example: search 'powder keg paladin'

The Investigator class would be a good one for this, they have trap finding and can gain resistance to poison unless you take the archetype that gives that up in favour of moving vital skills over to Int. Regardless they make excellent trap finders and can easily help you avoid a lot of the nastier stuff Mummy's Mask throws at you.

Started running book 1 last night and my players came up with a rather interesting party composition.
The Sons of the Sphinx:
1. Mesu Rashidi, human, cleric of Nethys 1.
2. Hekaib Teremun, Human, occultist 1.
3. Keminub of the Dunes, elf bard (archaeologist) 1
4. Seherab Glyphkeeper, dwarf unchained monk 1.
5. Tobias Lockwell, human alchemist 1.
6. Ali Al-Radi Cadi, dhampir (dayborn) sorcerer 1.

So, my brother is contemplating GM'ing this, which means I get to play. My first inclination was to go with a Sorcerer with the Imperious Bloodline and Blood of the Pharaoh trait, however I think whatever party I played with wouldn't be able to suppress the urge to kill "Faz the Great One" if I did ;)
I am seriously pondering duel wield (maces) ranger with favored enemy undead, with the undead hunter trait. My issue with that is I am unsure as to how I want to work the background for such a character. Normally if I'm feeling uninspired by a background I'll just roll randomly in Ulitmate Campaign and build from there, but as I have a decent amount of time before this AP ultimately starts I would like to see what the hive mind recommends as a unique background for such a character build. Thanks!

I'll never get to play this, probably because I'll be GM'ing it within the next year- but regardless! I like the idea of someone somehow involved in the study of the Dark Tapestry. Maybe a Summoner, investigating the potential links between the Old Gods of Osirion and the Elder Gods above?

There is a faction of the church of Pharasma based out of Wati called the voices of the spire. Your undead hunter could be associated somehow with them or maybe an agent of the greater church of Pharasma sent to do a bit of recon on them under the guise of the lottery.

That's not a bad idea, especially as the Pathfinder Wiki indicates that the head of that order, Nakht Shepses, is an illegitimate son of a prominent Wati family. It gives some interesting counter play in the character's background for my DM to work with, if he wants to have a political angle. Thanks for that kernel, I'll keep it in mind!

I'm currently running, but if I could play it myself I'd love to make a Life Oracle who worships Osiris. In fact, I liked the idea so much I introduced him as an NPC to help guide and anchor the party, with the limit that he cannot set foot in the Necropolis due to his Dual Curse which anchors him to a certain radius around a small shrine to Osiris in the Grand Mausoleum.

That's a really smart way to use the oracle curse for a recurring NPC!

Honestly, I really think this AP is one that would seriously benefit from a group session to collaborate on the party's theme and intent. There's all these other adventuring groups out there, and your party shouldn't just be the 'we met at a tavern the night before' group.
My idea would be to have the party be a group of students from some Ustalavic University. If you wanted to ignore the high-imperialist look of that, then researchers from the Sothis Exhibitory or something like that.
quibblemuch |
I had a character thought along those lines. An Elder Mythos Cleric of Nyarlathotep (Faceless Sphinx or Black Pharoah) from Lepidstadt, come down to unearth some of that Old Time Religion...
Of course, since I'm our regular GM the chances I'll ever play that character are about as likely as the Great Old Ones coming back.
*crosses fingers anyway*
