They no longer need us for breeding, just the heavy lifting
What's the difference?

Now, if I can just get Mr SnowJade to do that...
As for artificial womb technology, they're working on it. There was a segment on "Through the Wormhole" a couple of weeks ago (episode about human reproduction), and so far, fish have been artificially gestated. Yes, I know, but back in 1993, we (anthropologists) thought it would take at least twenty-five years to crack the human genome. All it took was someone inventing an app for that. Now the big questions are, who owns the information? What do they get to do with it, and under what circumstances? I'm very much afraid - really afraid - that Monsanto's actions are going to be a drop in the ocean.
As for needing you, yellowdingo, we'll always need you *peck*. Just go look up Warren Zevon's "Mister Bad Example" if you don't believe me.

Nah! Monsanto's actions are merely to create the needed legal groundwork.

I think this thread is interesting, especially in relation to this article: linky.
Basically, due to the sick gender norms we have in society, men rarely feel desired or wanted and thus feel they need to be needed, otherwise theyll just be dumped off somewhere or be made "obsolete". I think its partly due to how men get affirmation throughout life; all a mans life he feels his value is determined solely by his actions. Not that its any better for women, who get taught that their value is determined by how well they can please a man. But this fixation around performing well as the only means of value - and only performing intypically masculine ways like earning money or protectig from physical assailants - leads to a situation where as women have to earn income too and as the wage gap slowly decreases, and where physical assailants arent part of everyday life, men can feel that theyre not "needed"anymore -and equate this with being "obsolete".
But, interesting find with the link.

More expensive NOW. Give it a while. Or not, since the next republican president the US gets will put a heap of red tape higher than Mt Rushmore on it.
A few countries, including the US, may kill it with red tape.
It just means those who have the means will travel to countries that do not restrict the technology.
*It brings to mind the "Beggers in Spain" trilogy, where progressively strict restrictions on genetic engineering in America simply means the wealthy travel abroad.

I don't think you can place this entirely on society. I'm certain that society exaggerates it, but its a pretty observable cross species drive for the male to help provide some of the extra energy that the females need to make the next generation.

Yeah, it exists throughout nature too, but yeah, society strengthens it several times over when other behaviours that are cross-species observable are strong taboos (incest and cannibalism, for example).
I don't see it as problematic that people help each other, in fact I think it's essential to society, the issue is when one's self-worth is tied directly to how ultimately _needed_ one is, and how society reinforces that. Not only is it hurtful to all those who are directly affected by it, but it also leads to strong opposition towards equality; the sentiment and statements in this thread, while tongue in cheek, is seriously used by anti-women's rights and have been since at least before women's suffrage (there's some great postcards floating around with basically the "men will be obsolete" punchline).

I'm not particularly interested in breeding or heavy lifting. For the later, I'm still waiting on my Silver Centurion briefcase-armor.
Yeah, now if we could fight the War to Stop Relatives from Asking Us When We're Gonna Have a Kid (or Another Kid), then I'm all in. I'll be in the Calvary leading the charge on We Need You Childless People to "Volunteer" to Work Harder 'Cause Parents Need Time Off, and We're Too Cheap to Staff Up for It.

Always hard to say how much of it(if any) is society.

A huge problem with the gender wars are confusing equality for sameness. The genders aren't the same, so on one hand giving them the same thing doesn't work. On the other hand treating them differently involves so many incomparable variables that either side has a point baout being discriminated against.
Males are going to feel this way until trans humanism rolls around. I don't think there's any changing that.

Can I join? I've got enough relatives and friends telling me I need kids that I'm starting to believe it myself!
