Liberty's Edge

So we've all seen really bad optimization advice being given out, you know, the stuff so bad that all you can do is laugh at it? So let us all compile it. (Nothing from this site please, we don't want to embarrass anyone.)

1) You don't need strength on your monk, damage isn't important. Dexterity + Wisdom plus things like deflect arrows and crane style are where it is at.

2) Barbarians suck because they get knocked out of rage any time they become fatigued.

3) Barbarians suck because after they get out of a rage they're fatigued and fatigue lasts for hours.

4) You should check out the message boards, they're full of good ideas.

5) A dual wielding rogue at level 20 can drop 60d10 sneak attack damage! Being a Rogue is totally worth doing!

6) The only thing that matters is damage output.

7) Your fellow players will love you if you focus on only one thing and do it better than anyone else in the universe.

8) You can always get your combo off.

Sovereign Court

9) People are really as good at optimizing and character building as they themselves think.

10) Fudge the dice. Hey it's just a game. What's another 'nat 20' between friends. The sooner we wrap up the sooner we can play WoW.

11) Rule Zero - You'll all be dead soon enough.

12) who needs equipment

12) Optimisation is a black and white thing and can be judged regardless of how people play the game.

13) If you don't use an 'official' class build you found on the Paizo forum, you're playing wrong.

14) You want to be a ROLE-player, not a ROLL-player. so you should take skill focus (basket weaving) so that your fighter has a hobby.

And then your wizard can create the uber-optimised basket of hiding for when you all need to rest.

Liberty's Edge

Obviously this thread was a bad idea. I thought we could compile an amusing list and that keeping people from listing things that happened here would keep people from getting offended and making snide comments but apparently I was wrong. Will a mod shut it down for me.

No.

And without being rude, look at the title of your thread which basically asks people to comment on and have a laugh at other players?

If I was learning the game and came on these threads I would want to think I would get support and not criticism/mockery.

I don't get where you're coming from, strayshift. This thread isn't about mocking players learning the game, it's about pointing out bad advice GIVEN to those players. I actually think it's important, given that it shows that not all advice you get is good and you shouldn't feel like you should unerringly go on the suggestions of others, a mistake I made when I was starting out on the game.

Anyway...

15. You don't need perception, so don't bother putting any skillpoints into it.

16. Never use teamwork feats.
17. Never use teamwork

18. You should never worry about what the other characters are playing and focus entirely on your personal fun. It's the GM's job to accomodate you're very specific needs from the game.

19. Your job as a melee fighter is to act before the casters and throw yourself between the enemy and the casters to ensure their safety.

Bad advice 20) There can be no middle ground between uber powerful broken optimized and pitifully brokenly uselessly ineffective. Certainly not middle ground that's exciting.

21) never play sober, indoors, or clothed...

22) If you want to deal damage as a rogue, go TWF high dex

22)you shouldn't roll a barbarian, we already have a fighter to take the hits, better roll a second rogue for the DAMAGE

23)don't buy a cold iron weapon yet, wait 2 more levels and i will craft for you a +3weapon that negates cold iron DR (party wiped 1 level afterwards ^^)

24) In combat healing is for suckers. If you heal in combat you aren't power gaming and are there for playing wrong. See Badwrong fun.

25) if you're a frontline melee'r you are full attacking in combat every round regardless of circumstances...or you are irrelevant dead weight. See also xp sink.

26) Every table has their own style of how to do things... But if you want to do it the RIGHT way, you should do it MY way! ^_^

27) The gm is God. His plot and world are designed with the same loving care as to follow the same dynamic as the ABC Baking Company... your job is simply to shut up and enjoy it because its awesome.

You give-a-me the money
I make-a-you-a-pie
What-a-you mean you-a-no-like-a-the pie?
You dont-a-know how to eat a pie
You dont-a-know what you like
You eat-a the pie. You like-a the pie. You pay for the pie. You get out of my store.
You tell all of your friends that I showed you what a good pie is.
You bring them by tomorrow
I show them what good pie is
You do that. Yes. Goodbye.

28) Catfolk kender... You want to play a catfolk kender. Your gm and your party will love it because everyone loves catfolk kender. If the sytem doesnt have catfolk kender... Make one anyway... It'll be awesome. If your gm doesnt allow catfolk kender, make it a kitsune kender instead... or better yet, just make one anyway. It'll be awesome.

You have t minus 1 hour to change that to #26 Takeda or else! ;).

26. Fix. Immediately.

Done and done!

29) If your a paladin you must be lawful stupid anything else should make you fall. Even that should make you fall because eventually their are no right choices.

Lulz. I'm such a tyrant.

30) Paladin is not a playable class. Fallen paladin is a playable class. You can make a fallen paladin. Gms love when you make these because it means your character has a built in 'goal' of redeeming yourself. I mean redeeming himself. Yeah. Thats what I mean.

Looks like we got a hard case. What? You didn't get the memo? This ain't power gaming, it's POWER POSTING!

> Surveys countryside< things are looking a lot more civilized around here for the moment. Let's be watchful for riffraff but I think we can lay back and have some fun for a while. Let's do this!

31) WBL means 'want buddy's loot'... Your first job as a player is to try and get treasure from other party members... (see kenderkin's rule 12) Because they have the same goals and everyone is dangerous (see rules 7 and 9), If the other players have properly followed rule 9 then they will have properly followed rule 15, but just in case they're not as good at taking advice as you, it's still best to do so in a surreptitious manner by playing ninjas and rogues (see rule 5 and shroudb's rule 22), passing notes to the dm instead of announcing it outright (see rule 7). Make sure to sit as close to the gm as possible to avoid having your correspondance intercepted.

32) Once you get everyone else's loot, your job is to destroy it, (see daenar's rule 26) because every gm and player agrees that the game is much more fun and balanced when nobody has any loot. (again see rule 12)

33) Then go hug something that has level drain until you're almost dead... Try not to overdo it, but if you accidentally overdo it, thats ok. (see Rule 11)

Please, for the love of all that is holy, tell me no one actually suggested these things to you.

Heheheh. I know, I know. It seems wrong. If you're still not sure I suggest reviewing rule 26. If that still doesnt work for you it wouldnt be inappropriate to substitute daenar's rule 26 instead.

34) Frontline melee is totally valuable in the end game, even if you're not full attacking every round!

35) Vital strike is the best feat EVAR!

36) There are totally better things you can do than cast spells.

let's return to actual advices^^:

37) you should never take quick draw unless you are making a throw character

38)why did you bought handy haversack when bag of holding for just a bit more holds so much more items

39)the best kind of wizard is evocer

I've seen #31 and 32, and 33 was a forum topic a long time ago if I remember right.

40. Paladins get charisma to everything. Dump everything else. Its okay, you can just smite.

41. Wizards suck, all that bookkeeping and if your spellbook is destroyed your useless.

42. Rule 26 is always better than rule 0. Which is why the answer to the ultimate question to life the universe and everything is 42.

I don't actually see a contradiction here...unless we are going beyond what I said and into the realm of assumption?

#34 contradicts #25, because number 25 pretends full attacking is just as good as not. You lose 3/4 of your attacks if your 2hF, and more if your twf. Its a big loss, and it kinda' sucks. best not turn it into an argument that consumes the thread about how martial caster disparity.

I may not be around when it comes up in order, so i'll follow rule 22 and preemptively declare rule 69.

69) its called rule 69. Use your imagination... For more inspiration see rules 21 and 43.

44) RPG/Gamer culture is most effectively taught and carried on to future generations of gamers through negative reinforcement.
