There are a lot more Anaye than I'd previously thought.
"Big Centipede" is a monstrous centipede that arose from the blood of some of the other monsters. I'd like to see it as a blood-controlling vampiric centipede monster. I can't seem to find its name in Navajo.
Yeitso Ibahi, which is different than the Yeitso, is a monstrous, gray, mountain dwelling hybrid of various insects, mostly wasplike. Gray symbolizes evil. Nice bug monster.
Yeitso is in fact the oldest and most powerful Anaye. This would be the CR 20 1 if the Anaye were an outsider faction. A pangolin ogre as discussed before, maybe with some fire starting abilities. (His scales were made of flint.) He has lava for blood.
Cac Ditsini (Bony Bear) is a particularly interesting one. He is a monstrous bear made out of stone, but the translation of its name makes me think that he'd make a great fossilized bear monster. We can always use more fossil themed creatures, mythology doesn't give that option very often.
Theelget is a burrowing, headless beast with four antlers. Possibly gopher like. Very weird.
The Delgeth are monstrous pronghorn beasts that served the Theelgeth. Others operated independently from him in packs.
The Tsenagale are in fact wingless and not very harpy like, more like feathered ogres with beaks. They have a throwing attack as there main weapon.
Xakaz Asdza is the montrous personification of cold. She resembles a demonic hag. I'd have here be a female ice golem rather than a Winter Hag copy.
Tsenaxesai are rock monsters that crush their enemies between them. They are deceptively cunning.
Loka Digij is a plant monster with razor sharp reeds that it uses as weapons.
Binaye Ahani are basically the same as previously described.
Ditcin is the obese personification of hunger. He seemed to perpetually starve despite his great weight.
Tsedaxodziltali was a whiskered male demon with a supernatuarlly powerful kick.
Ya is a weak but evil louse spirit. This would be the familiar level Anaye for an Outsider group.
Sacdijol is the personification of old age. Alternatively described as male or female.
Te'ei is poverty personified, and has two bodies, one male, one female.
The Rock Swallows (Unknown name in Navajo) are supernaturally fast demon birds.
Bil is the personification of sleep. Seems to be humanlike with the expected powers.
Seitaad are demonic creatures made of sand that would smother their enemies.
Totsozi is a demonic, possibly eel-like, monster made of water.
Tcatcoc are beautiful, succubus-esque creatures who spread Syphilis and venereal disease.
Xoc Detsahi is a monstrous, evil, living cactus.
Cacnaalkahi is a monstrous bear demon with amazing tracking abilities.
Tsenagahi is a fast moving humanoid rock monster, another that crushes enemies to death,
That's all the ones I found.

That is an awesome list. While I know some of these already, the cactus, bony bear, NA Symplegades, Plant, ya and tracking bear are new to me and they rock.
I asked the guy from Book of Creatures about them and he didn't knew about the Cactus yet, and said some of them aren't Anaye but just NA monsters, probably Seitaad is too, but I like them in Pathfinder to be Anaye.
Wannabe Demon Lord |
Thanks. In terms of sources, I got all of them from this site. I tried to get workable names out of all of them, and reworked some of them a bit in order to make them more RPG appropriate. I would be okay for most of these Navajo monsters to be one group, but I'd like monsters from other NA cultural groups to be something else.

The Seitaad, Reeds and Cacti are not Anaye but environment hazards, the Swallows and Bears are minor Anaye, the Insect Yeitso are born from the blood of Yeitso itself and Poverty, Cold and Old Age among others are the surviving Anaye.
That is what the guy from Book of Creatures found out :-p
He didn't mention the river, but I guess it ends up with the environment hazards.

I do have a feeling that 5 new dragons will be presented in this book. However, I see a little problem if they want to "follow" the trend of occult materials.
Air, Earth, Fire and Water dragons? Huh... they're called Primal Dragons... and they're in B2.
The best options I could see are:
- Mesmer Dragon (Mesmerist)
- Phantom Dragon (Spiritualist)
- Mind Dragon (combination of Psychic and Kineticist [aether])
- Relic Dragon (Occultist)
- Spirit Dragon (Medium)
Also, what WOULD be cool is if they have alternate traits for dragons that use the Kineticist's class features. For instance:
- Replacing the breath weapon by the Kinetic Blast
- Replacing spells by Talents
- Applying Talents to the breath weapons
Seriously, a Brine Dragon could fight like a Hydrokineticist, just like a Red Dragon could fight like a Pyrokineticist.

We know for sure that there is a dream dragon and a nightmare dragon but the other three esoteric dragons have not been reveled yet. I am hoping for astral, ethereal, and positive energy.
I am really curious how many 0HD races made it in the book. B1 has 11, B2 has 7, B3 has 5, and B4 has 10.
I am also curious of how many templates B5 will have.
Mechagamera |
This will probably be unpopular, but I hope they cut down on the 0HD races. I get that it is good for the bottom line for players to buy the Bestiaries for new races, but B4's left me with the impression that the races were a lot more for the players than for GM's. Fewer races that have something beyond "generic dude with 4 arms" would be appreciated.

IIRC, there actually were not any "new" oHD races in Bestiary 4. All of the 0HD races were either sample races made using the race builder, reprinted from the ARG, Tian races from the Jade Regent support material, and Changelings (from the carrion crown AP).

More Great old ones
More Fey
If they make more undead, I would, as a GM, like to have some all-purpose undead unlike the recently created niche undead.
Spawn of Rovagug(maybe under spawn of divine destruction because Rovagug is setting-specific.)
Eldest
Aliens(preferably Dominion of the Black, but they would probably be in Occult bestiary if at all)
Robots(Just use the ones in Inner Sea Bestiary and Iron Gods)
MOAR high-CR dudes. Because my playgroup usually has OP characters, I need as many of these as I can get.
Dwagons.
Overall I am very exited for B5 and these are just personal preferences but if any make it in I will be happy.

We have crystal dragons there in B2 though I know there not the version your talking about.
Never liked the Yuan-Ti though I do like Serpentfolk.
I actually forgot about the olive slime.
Well, there was also the werevixen (AD&D, but irrelevant with the Kitsune in existence), the Shadow/Brown dragons, the Lupinal (Monster Manual II, for 3.x), the not-sucky Phoenix (MM II), the Marrash (also from Monster Manual II), Moon Rats, Cerebral Parasites (Complete Psionics Handbook), Meenlocks (horrible little things), those anthropomorphic time-traveling birds that were literally made of metal and could carry two conversations simultaneously, and so on. Oh, the Teratomorph, too; pure concentrated entropy.

It is a real shame that some of the best creatures from AD&D and from D&D 3.x are all non-OGL. Imagine trying to fight Olive Slime or the Yuan-Ti on Golarion, or even Crystal Dragons.
Nobody is stopping you from having YOUR Golarion have olive slimes, or yuan-tis, or crystal dragons, or illithids, or beholders, or any of the other closed content.
By the way, the olive slime is open content, and in the Tome of Horrors Complete.

Just so you guys know, Kobold Press has released the Southlands Bestiary which has a ton of monsters that were requested in this thread.
It has, in terms of mythical creatures:
Amphiptere
Angatra (Malagasy ghoul)
Anubian (Anubis based race)
Asanbosam (The closest I've ever seen to how I personally imagine it design wise)
Behtu (I think it's mythical. Can't find much info on it, but it's a Maori word. Mandrill monster)
Blemmyes (Awesome)
Bouda (Incredibly cool artwork.)
Buraq
Shabti (More like the mythical ones)
Dau
Kishi (As a demon)
Camazotz (As a Demon Lord)
Apau Perape (Another that SEEMS like something from mythology, but Google is unhelpful with, ape demons)
Dingonek (Hilarious)
Dipsa (As an OOZE)
Drakon
Edimmu
Emela Ntouka
Esfwr (Same status as the Behtu and Apau Perape, weird, humanoid made out of a swarm of birds)
Gbahali
Aeshma (As a Djinn)
Azza (As an electric gremlin)
Jaculus
J'ba Fofi
Mbielu
Mngwa
Nandi Bear
Ngoubou
Nguma-Monene
Serpopard
Subek (As a Monstrous Humanoid race)
Tzipori (Possibly Mythical, Flame spewing dragon/badger hybrid)
Wakane (Pretty sure its mythical, Pterosaur beast)
Zimwi (Lion troll)
Awesome, full color artwork, tons of cool original monsters as well. I think a lot of the people who have posted here would love this book.
Myth Lord |
Ok, so I just bought the Southlands Bestiary, and I must admit that i'm shockingly impressed by it!
The artwork is simply amazing and stunning and most of the creatures are awesome!
There is a great deal in this book and I really hope the makers of this book will Kick-start or otherwise create much more of these in the future (Native American HINT HINT ;-) ) as that would be awesome!
This are some of the better and disappointing critters of the book:
Arboreal Grappler: Ok this is a really awesome critter that reminds me of the North American Fearsome Critter named Argopelter, it has the same arms at least, and if it was called the Argopelter I wouldn't even mind, in fact that artwork is gonna suit my Argopelter, it sure as hell is much better than any of the original argopelter artworks I've found!
Asanbosam: Another artwork which really suits the creature, beatiful! I love the iron diet of the creatures which gives them their teeth, which makes perfect sense! Rusty for old ones is also very thought out! Perfect creature, one of my favorites in the book.
Blemmyes: WOW, Just WOW, this artwork is exactly what I searched for in Blemmyes, they remind me of the Serious Sam enemies and fit perfectly for the Blemmyes, its like someone drew the version from my mind. Their abilities are also very fitting.
Bouda: I never thought Gnolls had roots in mythology!? That artwork does most of the work but then come the awesome background and abilities of these torturers of the weak! Awesome, never cared for Gnolls too much, but this creature is going to end up in my project about mythology now.
Cactid: I really love cactus monsters and Pathfinder only has the humanoid cactus this far, so this awesome creature really comes from heaven for me. Awesome art.
Dau: Is this from Mythology? Can somebody LINK me to more information about these awesome Fairy-like creatures that spin solid illusions? I'm fasinated by them!
Kishi: Turning these into demons makes sense! Not really a huge fan of the picture but i'm happy this creature from mythology gets some love!
Dispa: It would have been better if this creature's bite turned creatures into oozes or into extremely thirsty victims that drink their own blood if no other liquid is nearby, but that artwork is really awesome!
Dire Spinosaurus: Wow, best Spinosaurus Artwork i've ever seen! Also an awesome beasty! Hope to see more dinosaurs in the future from you guys!
Drought Swallows: Here I was searching for artworks of Rock Swallows for my project as WDL mentioned some Anaye Demonic Swallow monsters from Native American myths called the Rock Swallows, this artwork comes pretty close and their abilities are also awesome.
Dune Mimic: At first I thought this can't be coincidence as this creature perfectly resembles another Anaye from Native American mythology, the living desert or Seitaad. Awesome creature with cool artwork and I always love more Mimics!
Gbahali: Thanks for this creature, it never came to my attention before, but that artwork startled my curiosity and now I use this mythological monster in my own project. I love this Chameleon Croc! One of my favorites in the book.
Azza: Another creature which resembles an other creature from myth, this cloud-rider artwork can come off as the Spanish Nuberu, which also ride clouds. I love Gremlins so they are all cool for me!
Mbielu: I'm very curious at the Mbielu-Mbielu-Mbielu! Beautiful artwork, best artwork for Mbielu i've seen on internet.
Ngoubou: These mixtures of Hippo and Styracosaurus is awesome and cute at the same time!
Serpopard: Too bad the neck is too short, as would it have been somewhat longer I would have found it perfect! The reptilian face really suits this creature and the colors are cool.
Titanobao: Awesome! Love this beast, and its one of my favorite prehistoric animals!
Wakane: Pretty much based on the Kongamato I guess, I love this artwork and creature, but I wonder why you guys didn't take a real mythological beast like the Ropen?
Xhkarsh: The mantis monster! This is a mantis monster! Love the artwork and the abilities and I was bummed this wasn't from mythology! As myths could use some Mantis!
Now for the creatures that I really didn't like that much, which are few indeed.
Emela Ntouka: The artwork seems kinda off, and I imagined a more fearsome beast for the Elephant Killer, less Rhinoceros and more prehistorical looking.
Nandi Bear: This is just another bear monster, would have changed this creature a bit or mix it with an hyena, or put alien tentacles inside its maw.
Mngwa: A tiger/Panther would have been much better, don't like the Lion version at all, but the abilities are kinda awesome!
Jaculus: I can't see the spear-like head? Doesn't look that spear-like at all.
All other creatures are nice! The African myth creatures i'm kinda missing are: Adze, Kasai Rex, Olitiau, Abatwa, Anansi, Petsuchos, Ya-Te-Veo, Cerastes, Eloko, Ga-Gorib, Intulo, Lunwaba, Jidra, Sak, Ropen, Ichneumon, Leontophone, MIgas, Rompo, Sandwalker and Zogbanu, but who knows they can be in another book?
I really hope to see more of these area-specific monster books full of mythology monsters from you guys!
Keep them coming!

Something more original is must here.
And thus the reason I suggested Gigas from the non-elemental planes as well. I'm especially interested in the Elysium Gigas (always up for some good-aligned power houses), Negative Energy Gigas (aka Necrophyscians), and the Boneyard Gigas (perhaps Pharasma keeps them around due to their hatred of undead or desire to protect the River of Souls)?
My only problem is that the Heaven Gigas (aka the Eclystrogen) are apparently the weakest members of their kind? Why in the nine hells is this I wonder? Why do good-aligned beings from the planes keep getting the shaft in terms of power? It was bad enough that the Empyreal Lords have problems stacking up against foes like the Demon Lords.
We still don't have a CR 20 Archon and yet we keep getting tons of daemons, demons, devils, and the like.

Wouldn't mind some interesting types of occult ghost monsters, similar to the likes of Stingy(st-TIN-gee) Jack, the soul of a man who cheated the devil out of his soul, but also ruined his chance to go to heaven when he died. Left with but a single coal for warmth and light, the earthbound spirit fashioned a container from a gourd to act as a lantern. He now roams the land, having earned many names like Jack of the lantern, and Jack o'lantern. Dealing with this spirit is no mean task(he did manage to cheat the devil twice out of getting his soul after all(the second time perminantly)), but he is supposedly warded away by the fashioning of carved lanterns of turnips, pumpkins, and other similar types.
In pathfinder terms, this is a good idea for a spiritual threat that cannot be simply beaten into non-existance, but must be carefully banished or warded away by understanding their weakness. Really hope they include some interesting threats and spins on classics for players to dread encountering.

Reminds me of a different being of that name - although one associated with a different light-emitting object.

Seasonal based entities could be interesting. Things like the true Wild hunt(rather than the lesser wild hunts), Danse macabre, Stingy Jack(jack o'lantern), or even the krampus only occur on a seasonal basis. That being said, facing these true terrors and surviving, let along suceeding in driving them off is no mean feat. Like fighting a vampire until dawn, it's sometimes a case of endurance vs the passage of tine, all while an immortal entity is trying to rearrange your organs positional state to something less healthy.
Also introducing some of those 'fates worse than death' creatures could really give the players a reason to fear what might happen if they die. Imagine having your soul used as fuel for a lanterns flame, or sucked away into a bottle. Being trapped in a nightmarish hellscape forever makes a simple death to a goblin seem tame by comparison.

I'd like to see a colossal fourth-dimensional being that appears to regular 3rd dimensional creatures as a huge floating amourphous blob, because it only partially intersects with our three dimensions, it can shift how far it intersects with our dimensions and this way grow and shrink however much it desires (from huge size to nonexistent) without making any changes to its stats other than size modifiers and step out of the intersection entirely and disappear by apparently shrinking into nothingness and then moving outside our dimensions to "rematerialize" elsewhere. Also it can stick other appendages into our dimensions seemingly materializing independently floating parts of itself at a distance to attack its victims/enemies.
Because it exceeds our dimensions it can never fully enter them.
And yes, it can time travel at will in any direction.

Okay, I've seen the statistics for the Hadhayosh, and I do agree that such a creature should be reprinted into B5.
But, outside of mythical creatures, I think we can use some non-reptilian, non-megafauna prehistoric animals.
Like Repenomammus? That could be an interesting new animal companion. I would love it if the thing had bravery (like the fighter ability; +1 or +2 against fear effects), as I see this thing like a much braver and more aggressive badger-like beast.
And one prehistoric creature I absolutely want in Pathfinder is a Gorgonops.

Sure thing, Adam! I only have one request... no, two requests, in any case. Neither is particularly serious, but I hope you'll get a chuckle out of them anyway. They are:
Colossal Frog
Colossal Pegasus
Mostly because I want to see the teeth-gnashing by miniatures companies wondering how in the hell they're going to make a profit from producing those. And the look on the players' face when the GM pulls one out. Or the look on the GM's face when a PC summons one.
Basically I think the Bestiary series is best when used to induce heart attacks.
Instead of asking for figures that no company would make a cent from, have you considered making use of 3d Printing at your local Staples. You can download software to set the design and have it done to whatever size you want.
KoolKobold |
I would like to see those tiny horses that had paws instead of hooves. Some more prehistoric invertebrates would be cool as well.
You mean Propaleotherium ? I can see that being a nice option for a new familiar IMO.
I don't know if we've gotten anything for Ambulocetus , but if we haven't, it would be nice to have that in here as well.
KoolKobold |
Yep, those look like them KoolKobold, I remember drawings of them being attack by one of the really pig predatory flightless birds that lived at the time. Though the Axebeak seems to have covered those guys already.
Right. The Axebeak is, technically a Gastornis (that's the big flightless bird carnivores you were talking about)-more specifically, a Gastornis is an axebeak with a bit more Hit Die and/or with the advanced template.

I'd like to see about 90% of those, maybe more. It's a good list, but my main problem with it is the lack of balance between cultures. True balance is never going to be found, but you can easily have more than five Hindu creatures, (Pisacha? Peymakilir? Buru? Kabhandi? Yaksha? Mahisha?) two Caribbean creatures (Lusca? Diablesse? Baka? Ligahoo? Hupia? Moko Jumbie?), and seven non-Persian Middle Eastern creatures (Al? Sirrush? Tapagoz? Rabasu? Anzu? Dalhan?).
Few cultures have as much readily available information as Japan or Greece, but most have at least a few dozen.
