Mythology and folklore tends to be focused around creatures that can either hurt someone, conflict with some cultural taboo, or have some sort of religious significance.
That is why you get lots of creatures based off of dogs/wolves, serpents, etc. Or monsters tied into seduction or improper burial. People just didn't care about fungus other than to make sure not to eat the wrong types. It's only when science started paying more attention to fungus (and their awesome biology) and people stopped worrying about getting eaten by animals do fungus-based monsters show up in pop culture.
FYI...Woodwose are pretty clearly wild man types creatures well described in folklore and cryptozoology. I would say their is pretty low change Paizo would do something drastically different like make them fungus people.

Ow, I don't mind, I needed a fungus-mythological creature for my own project, all I have now is the Polevik because Paizo made it mushroom-like... And while searching for Moss People I found the name Woodwose which can be used a bit like any plant creature.
It really looks like the fey own all of or close to all of the myths involving fungi.

Yes fey are based on and around plants in many versions.
I found a new Philippine monster!
The Sigbin has ears that appear to be bat wings, they drain people from their shadows (blood through the shadow) they are pretty neat!
I can't remember a creature that feeds through or on shadows so the Sigbin could be a cool new original creature from the plane of shadows!

Damn! Is there really no fungus/toadstool/mushroom monster in legends, folklore or in mythology?
Does anybody knows about a fungus monster from mythology? All animals and plants have their myths and legends, but there are none about fungus?
It's probably because the concept of fungus is rather recent. In most of history, fungus were thought to be plants. It was only in 1969 that the Fungi kingdom was created and the fungus were categorized apart from plants or protozoa.
In ancient history and in the medieval times, when most myths were created, fungus were just plants. That is why it's dificult to find fungus related mythology

Well trees are also just plants and there are the Jubokko, Kapre and Jinmenju. Same goes to other plants like the Umdlebi, alraune and mandragora.
Fungus are always found in myths as ingredients for witches and hags, but no monsters are made about them while they can be very poisonous, that is very strange in my opinion.
Maybe there were fungus creatures, but they are fogotten or all info is lost about them.
In one game Chernobog the Slavic god of darkness is pictured as a fungus creature, i'm gonna use him. His name seems to be much like chernobyl, which is often used as mutate land for horrid mutates and plants, so toadstools and other fungus can make a link there, also his name ends in bog, a place many fungus love to grow.

I'd like to see:
- Kasa-Obake/Karakasa, that Japanese umbrella monster
- The gentle Manatee, animal companion
- Giant Otter, also an animal companion
- Coelacanth
- A tea cup chihuahua, or similarly Tiny Dog, as a familiar
- Red Panda and Penguin familiars
- Archdevils
- Cats of Ulthar
- Some sort of arboeal ape that uses yelling for attacks, possibly named the Harangutan
- The Jackalwere's equivalent of a skinwalker
- An undead/corrupted Treant

The closest I can think of is a fairy ring.
Check Haida mythology for a Fungus Man.

Thanks Vod for the information! I knew already about the Fairy Ring, too bad its not really a monster but more something for fairies.
Talking about big Otter Monsters:
Dobhar-Chu (Irish) - While the Dobhar-Chu are related to the otters they resemble a bit, they have rainbow-colored, reptilian scales and are nowhere as kind and gentle as their much smaller relatives, they despise other otter species and kill them on sight while leaving the corpses to rot as they find the flesh of otters distasteful and unworthy of eating. Dobhar-Chu have this cute, puppy-like eyes they use to lure other creatures close to the waters edge, then they surprise them like a crocodile would, leaping out of the water with their huge, deformed and out-of-place looking jaws and teeth, tearing the victims to shreds in seconds. Dobhar-Chu are just as playful as their otter relatives, but their playing style is savage and cruel, tearing off arms and legs and eating them in front of the horrified victim, or working together in teams of two to tear the victims in half by both pulling on one leg or arm at the same time.
Dobhar-Chu are by far the fastest and most nimble creatures living in water, they often share their lakes, rivers, streams and ocean homes with more powerful creatures like the Abaia and Ahuizotl, while the Abaia attack the annoying creatures on sight as they kill too many creatures living inside their lakes, the Ahuizotl enjoys their company and often use the most powerful Dobhar-Chu as it's most loyal right-hand.

Cats of Ulthar just sound like a swarm of house cats.
Tiny dogs, red pandas, and penguins as familiars would be interesting.
I am all for the Japanese umbrella monster.
I wouldn't mind a giant otter.
We have plenty of fungus creatures, molds, and tree based plant monsters but could use a lot more plant creatures other then those types.
Some megafauna would be nice since we didn't get any in Bestiary 4.

I've found another new monster online, a very hard too find one indeed!
This time I found a Dragon creature known as Svara, this yellow dragon has a very long pteranodon-like horn on its head and loves to poison other creatures with its extreme poisonous breathweapon.
Probably best friends with the Lavellan.

MMCJawa, why don't you post some of the more rare mythological monsters in here sometimes? You always come up with these very rare mythological and folkloric monsters nobody ever heard about!
I'm searching the internet like a berserker, but I rarely find something interesting anymore, mostly you come up with interesting creatures tho, so please share some more! :D

I was hoping they'd eventually make a version of the Ursinal for the agathions. As you can tell by my avatar, they were my favorite celestials back in 3.5. What could be cooler then a celestial bear? Warm and caring, while able to erupt in clawed fury. An idea I had for a new god but it required him to be raised by a bear agathion, but since there are none I can't do it.

Are creatures from the various original Oz books ok to use? If so I'd like to see creatures from them in a future Bestiary. There are 18 books from L. Frank Baum about Oz, so there are plenty of creatures, playable races and other races to stat up.

"Paraelemental" and "Quasielemental" Planetouched (that which Wizards of the Coast evidently won't allow us to call "Genasi") PC races in the tradition of the legendary Planescape cosmology (which, if "D&D Next" wants to impress me, it will bring back in a manner that demonstrates it deserved to squat on that treasure hoard). By my reckoning, these would include specimens for:
Positive Energy
Negative Energy
Dust (Earth + Air)
Magma (Earth + Fire)
Mud (Earth + Water)
Smoke (Air + Fire)
Mist (Air + Water)
Steam (Fire + Water)
Mineral (Earth + Positive)
Ooze (Earth + Negative)
Ice (Water + Positive)
Salt (Water + Negative)
Radiance (Fire + Positive)
Ash (Fire + Negative)
Lightning (Air + Positive)
Void (Air + Negative)
Dragon78 |
We could use more elementals that is for sure. Though I never liked the terms quasielemental or paraelemental. We have lightning, mud, magma, and smoke but I would like the rest plus a time elemental and maybe a dream elemental.
I also like some creatures from the Oz book series.
If I could only have one biblical creature it would be the Leviathan.
I agree we do need a bear based Agathion and also wolf, owl, snake, turtle, rabbit, etc.. Also since they have a dragon based one how about a unicorn and griffon one as well.
Yes more playable plant creatures.
Gancanagh |
While we are at it, why don't we just give all excisting animals their very own Agathion?
I'm for more Elemental creatures, but the elemental creatures I want to see aren't like the simple Fire Elemental and Steam Elemental, I wanna see more elementals like Belkers, Magmin, Mihstu and other such elementals that aren't called fill-in-Something + Elemental.
I'm Hiding In Your Closet |
If I could only have one biblical creature it would be the Leviathan.
I'd go with the angels that consist entirely of wheels studded with eyes.
We also still seem short on Chaotic Good celestials - and speaking of otherworldly beings of that alignment, one of my favorite D&D monsters of all time is the Silthilar (caveat: linked page is in French, but it was the best I could spot) from Lords of Madness, Good-aligned aberrations that blow Flumphs out of the water. I guess Paizo can't do those, but still.
Outside of that? There's always room for weird new golems (rubber, salt, silk, sand, honeycomb golems that are full of live bee swarms, etc.). I wouldn't mind seeing more film monster homages, such as those from Guillermo Del Toro and Tim Burton movies (I've already made tentative statistics for the Pale Man and Beetlejuice), The Twilight Zone (which, if you look closely, is full of ideas for villains your PCs will hate), and Star Trek (a CN Outsider who can only be bested by a successful Perform [Oratory] check, anyone?). Great works of art could also provide inspiration (think Guiseppe Arcimboldo, Picasso, H.R. Giger, and Zdzislaw Beksinski).

Wich beast, the beast of the land or the beast of sea?
More sand based monsters would be nice though I would surprised that didn't get any in the next AP.
As for Golems I would like to see crystal/gemstone, rubber, sand, shell, vines, treasure, gold, mercury, energy(positive and negative), eyes, clothe, and more.

The beast from Revelations could be pretty nifty, if only to offend that one guy who got super upset at the number of the bestiary advertisement.
To make it even better, save the beast for bestery six, then put it on page 66
I also LOVE the idea of a be filled honeycomb monster
Maybe a Giant Japanese Hornet (they'll need to give it a different name) as a familiar option.

Alright. I don't know too many, but how about:
Impundulu: Black and white vampiric thunderbird like creatures.
Inkanyamba: Giant horse headed eel like cryptid
Intulo: A vaguely described form of reptilian humanoid. Maybe we could have him look like the famous "Dinosauroid?"
Tikoloshe: Vicious baboon like dwarf, incredibly charming and will actually seduce women, has super speed powers.
Mamlambo: Brain eating fish monster.
Have some more African beasties to go with those:
Ambize: Hog headed fish with human hands.
Migas: Flat, tentacled river creature.
Emela Ntouka: Reptilian Rhino beast with a long tail
Tompandrano: Giant scaly water monster with a glow in the dark head.
Pamba: Water monster so large it could swallow an entire boat and it's crew.
Mafedet: Lions with the heads and necks of serpents
Nehebkau: Man who ate Apophis's scales and became a human/serpent/scorpion hybrid.
Petsuchos: Sacred divine crocodiles
Rompo: Awesome skeletal hybrid beast
Kishi: Handsome humanoids with a hyena face on the back of their heads
Aigamuxa: Monstrous ogres with eyes on the soles of there feet.
Hai Uri: Fast moving monster with half a body.
Lightning Monsters: Raiju like creatures with the front half of a goat and back half of a croc
Sasabonsam: Giant red skinned vampiric arboreal ogre with prehensile feet.
Adze: Evil Vampiric firefly monster
Bori: Headless, hooved, disease demons
Ninki Nanka: Monstrous drake like beast
Lau: Carnivorous tentacled saurian beast
Olitiau: Giant cave dwelling demon bats
Adjule: Vicious Hell Hounds.
Nguma-Monene: Cryptid resembling a living Dimetrodon
J'ba Fofi: Giant spiders
Mbielu Mbielu Mbielu: "The animal with planks growing out of it's back"
Salawa: The mythical beast Set is supposed to be
Malawi Terror Beast: Large carnivorous mammal, a bit like the African version of the Beast of Gevauden
Ngoubou: Six horned rhino like beast
Trunko: Bizarre sea creature, like a whale with a trunk instead of a head.
Mngwa: Gigantic cryptid cats
Koakun Klun: Giant water monitor/croc hybrid
Nyaminyami: Fish headed serpent dragon
Mali: Demonic Hippo beast
Zantegeba: Baboon demon
EDIT: Dingonek: Can't believe I forgot this one, basically an aquatic saber tooth with fins and pangolin scales.
Some more thought needed, obviously. But how do those sound?
Also, Biloko, Chemosit/Nandi Bear, and Mokele Mbembe from the Adventure Paths should be in Bestiary 5!

I'd love to see the "genasi" versions of these, myself.

Well, considering that this thread is the bestiary 5 wishlist thread, and the four horsemen haven't been in a bestiary yet, it would seem like they would be appropriate for a bestiary 5 wishlist, don't ya think?

Some general concepts:
- Some sort of mystical flying whale, with magical gallstones.
- A friendly little fruit monster, like a cuddly walking peach, but you can eat it for a healing effect or something.
- A Small or Medium mushroom/flower monster that's mostly mouth; can act as a guard dog for fey or intelligent plant creatures.
- Some manner of giant trampling tumbleweed.
And of course (because never enough):
- Chicken, Koala, Tanuki, Trilobite familiars.
- Anomalocaris, Cassowary, Wombat animal companions.
- More terror birds, like the Kelenken and Gastornis. The Axebeak needs buddies.
- The plant companions from the ARG (Carnivorous Flower, Crawling Vine, Puffball, Sapling Treant) given write ups.

I feel like giving more monster suggestions, but I'm not sure where to begin. Anyone want to name a region, culture, etc. for me to cover?
Why don't you put in your entire list? Just divide them into spoilers to create groups of the different myths, so that the post won't be too long and people can click on the group of the creatures they want to see without having to see the entire list at the same time?
Also do you already have the Kikiyaon (owl monster) and Ahool (bat cryptid) in your African list?
Thanks for the Intulo, never saw that creature before and I desperately needed a cool lizardmen monsters from real mythology that isn't called Reptilian or plain lizardmen. I love that name and there aren't many monsters from myth that begin with a I yet.

Some Doctor Who based stuff (like actually seeing these weeping angel based Gargoyles statted out)
The Vashta Nerada, The whatever it was in the Waters of Mars, SOMETHING based off the... thing in Midnight.... whatever it was.
And so many more wonderful and wild and amazingly cool creatures found in Doctor Who, because that's a great source of creatures. Don't name them the same thing, but have at very least a homage to them. I mean just how would one deal with a massive Vashta Nerada Swarm? even the Doctor himself has one way to deal with them.... and that's to run.
