How do i make a good merfolk character?

I too have been toying around with the idea of how to play a merfolk.

My thought was a 1 Level dip in Oracle for Awesome display, and then playing sorcerer.

The other thought was playing an Archery bard Merfolk. Turn her into a bit of a siren. Both have flavorful aspects to them.

I'm just calling it what it is. Undine = Water Genasi.

Depending on how acceptable 3rd party stuff is, you might want to investigate this product. It has a trait that basically allows you to be Daryl Hannah in Splash; your tail becomes a set of legs on land, automatically reverting when you're in the water.

So I'm trying to make a merfolk fighter and need some advice. We are starting at Lv. 5 so I have some room to work. And before you ask No this is not an aquatic campaign and yes I am insane. The first problem is my land speed... thats 5. My first thought was to take take the strong tail trait wich increases my land speed to 15, then start with one Lv. as a barbarian to increase it to 25.

I really wanted to go pure fighter but I can deal with it for not being so slow. I was also going to do one handed and shield, but I'm not sure yet. What are some tips you can give me to make this work? Also what have I not thought about?

"Fins to Feet" spell + "Permanency" spell = merfolk on land :)

Really??

We are on a board, discussing a game, in which all the players are murderers.

APs with rapist Ogres, weapons designed to decapitate enemies, and some blood and boobs is an uproar.

For real?

How the hell can anyone even discuss this game and be such prudes?

That's like loving pizza, but hating the crust, sauce, and cheese.

Dang it, now my brain hurts!

Sounds like you're not from the USA.

Not everyone here is. I'm from Finland, for one.

Neither did I expect that. I'm from Germany myself.

I ended up making an Ifrit Barbarian/Oracle of Flame/Battle Prophet. With Boots of Striding and Springing she has a Base speed of 60'. So Your Merfolk could add 20' to its movement no problem with a 2 level dip, (Barb 1/OoF 1), unless you wanted to actually play either of those classes.

Might or might not be at work presently.. Additionally, thats Deathlock right?

Dethklok, yes.

Well I was just saying that my character has them, but even without them a 2 level dip will net you +20' base movement.

You could also change them to some other form of attire, a tail brqacelet or some such. The Core Ruelbook also allows for items to be swapped to another slot without cost if the GM allows it as well.

Two words: Sky Swim. :)

I really want to make a merfolk character too now. I always liked them but never could play one because of their speed impediment. But with the right class dips/combinations you can even make a non-strongtail (as in my imagination the description of the strongtail trait disrupts their pristine shape) keep up with the average land-dwelling PC, if not even out-classing them in speed. (OoF 1 , Barb 1, Martial Artist Monk 3, Fleet equals 50 ft without strongtail)

This would indeed work, but it feels to much like cheating. I want to see if I can actually function as a merfolk. But I will keep this in mind.

You do need to temper your expectations, it's not really reasonable to expect that you're going to perform on land on the same level as the two leggers, you're simply not built that way.

Is there a reason you're doing this, or are you just the type who can't resist pounding square pegs into round holes?

Cool, thanks. :)

I had never actually looked at this Mystery, it looks pretty sweet. :)

Sacred Servant Paladin also gets a domain. Albeit at level four.

have you considered armor? You might have to pay extra for not being able to wear conventional armor.

Silver Crusade

I like merfolk characters, I like Merfolk Druids. A properly built druid with wild shape can be good in melee.
