A idle thought one morning got me thinking about a possible Campaign. One that might get thrown at me, or I might throw at others...
The quest?
STEAL THE SUN!
The exact specifics of the sun, how it works, or what one means by "steal the Sun" can be left up to interpretation, but the point is still the same; The party must Stop the light of the sun from shining down on the characters' home planet.
So with this loosely defined quest, How do you suggest performing this activity?
If you want to be even more clever, come up with a plan for both a Pathfinder Setting based sun, and a more realistic Sun.

AndIMustMask |

go blind sarenrae somehow.
magical amplification artifact: cast darkness spell over the entire continent (or a really large chunk)
blindness/deafness (blindness) on everyone.
EVERYONE.
i'm sure there's a gem of a kingdom somewhere called the "sun-stone/gem/rock-of-incredible-value", steal that (you'll have technically stolen the sun).
move everybody underground.
in a world where gods are real physical beings walking around, go find and slay the sun god-embodiment.
create demiplane, gate everyone into it.

Pathfinder style sun:
Do it from the First World, where distance and size are more fluid, and reality tends to bend to the strong-willed. Presumably extinguishing (or stealing) the First World sun would ripple up the chain of dimensions.
Still not easy.
Real style sun:
Induce a supernova. Somehow. This would of course also wipe out the planet, but hey, nobody said there wouldn't be side effects.
Other than that -- and the good ideas from AndIMustAsk -- may I suggest a REALLY BIG set of hot pads?

A few ideas of how this could be accomplished, in a very general sense:
1) cover the world in thick dark clouds. probably something about an artifact that does this. the PCs "own" the sun by chosing where its light can shine.
2) kill the god(s) who is/are in control of the concept of the sun, giving the PCs control of the sun.
3) wish/miracle (if you want it to be a level-till-you-can-win game)
4) make deals with the appropriate outsiders/gods. this would specifically be a more social type game.
5) giant spaceships with super lasers, tractor beams, and magnetically sealed cargo bays!
6) have their be a scion/avatar or whatever of the sun as a mortal being in the world. possibly a church leader or some other leader who commands an organization the PCs are fighting. It's a kidnapping thing.

My plan of action:
Ask the bank for money and show them my plan (and fail)
Go attempt to steal a shrink ray (and intentionally fail)
Attempt to steal the shrink ray (and fail again)
Adopt 3 little girls with fake credentials
Successfully steal the shrink ray
Ask again for money from the bank (and fail)
Sell stuff to make rocket to get to sun
Lose adopted girls on a conflicted schedule
STEAL THE SUN!
Have time for the girl's planned event
rescue said girls
...
profit?

Although everyone says I'm a copycat, and that it would never work.

There have been some good things mentioned. Here is my take -
Have some creature/monster/entity/whatever that the players need to defeat. Some vague legends refer that the one way that it can be beaten is to 'steal the sun' from it. Bringing it underground may weaken it, and is something the players may do early. The true trick though to killing it would be to lure it to an area of the world under a full eclipse, effectively 'stealing the sun' from the creature.

Hmmm...part of me wants to do it with a mass enchantment spell. Make everyone in the world (or almost everyone) unable to perceive the sun. If no one knows it is still there, then might as well have it in your possession.
Maybe combine other plans as a diversion so that you can physically steal the sun when no one is looking. Then, when they break the enchantment, you get the last laugh.

just go place a giant shield or something that'll shade the earth and effectively block light from the sun to it... other then that.... magic?
That's the kind of stunt that gets one shot by Maggie Simpson.
Slamming shut the positive energy portal within the Sun might do it. Eventually. And with apocalyptic results.
Something less destructive... The metaphroical routes suggested with Sarenrae and the First World(which is a place where this sort of thing could reasonably happen without catastrophic collatoral damage) might be the best place to go.
edit-ah, this isn't Golarion-specific? Take that fairy-tale approach and run with it! Just use better special effects than that witch lady from The Day The Earth Froze. ;)

Are not stars just pinholes in the curtain of night? Go put a patch over the sun's porthole.
[I had a halfling in a Spelljammer campaign who had a Gem of Brightness. He claimed that in his home sphere, the stars in the night sky were these gems, secured to the 'inside of the sky', and that he promised his girl that he would steal for her one of the stars from the sky, and indeed did so. By the time he returned from his epic quest into the sky, which took several years, she had married another, and so he returned to wander the many spheres of the universe, still carrying the star.]

Have the PCs set in motion a chain reaction of celestial bodies colliding with one another. The final collision has a large planet crashing into the sun, conveniently knocking it in whichever direction the PCs had planned for it to go.
You could almost picture it like a cosmic game of pool. But it's more like curling, because the PCs will be helping it out along the way.

Shasf |

If you plan on Stealing/Sealing/Destroying the sun in the usual Golarion setting, you still have to deal with all of the locals that inhabit the sun.
Yes there are areas of the sun that can support the odd life-form or unlife-form. You can learn more in the Distant Worlds book.
Casting an Illusion spell, such as Silent Image and using the Widen Spell metamagic feat can net you 24 20ft cubes of illusion or 48,000 cubic feet. Casting at 20th level of course.
If you could shape that area so it could be a flat plane of 1/10 of an inch or smaller in size you could "steal" the sun from Golarion (the planet) with a thin sheet of bent reality.

Actually have a similar idea for a post apocalyptic Pathfinder setting. In it, two magocracies warred with each other into a stalemate. Using a terrible gambit, one nation was tricked by cultists of the god of madness and darkness into tapping into the power of the sun to scorch the other nation, allowing the cultists to poison the sun and likewise, poison the sun god. This turned the sun black and now the entire land is covered in darkness. Still working out kinks.

I'd move the planet rather than the sun. In every way conceivable that's more possible/probable than moving a star.
However, I'm going to agree that would take some artifact-level business. Probably several, actually. Feel free to break it down how you want but you essentially need to get some sort of transportation effect (by either freeing it from gravity of other celestial bodies so it can move or teleportation) and have that effect happen on a planetary scale.
Or, you know, you could just get in tight with a deity and call it a day. :D

HaraldKlak |

1) Hire a bunch of bards going around the world, shouting at people "Hey, you guys stoopid? You can't see the sun. That's RAW! Read the perceptions rules, noobz!"
2) A simple instance of Deeper Darkness, cast on either the planet or the sun. They are objects, right? Suddenly the world goes black.
In blotting out the sun, you need Planar Adaption, Fly, and some teleport as well.

lemeres |

So here are the steps of an overcomplicated plan:
1.) Worldwide illusion.
2.) Cast a large scale darkness spell. This helps to reinforce the illusion and gives something to distract those that get around the illusion on a personal level.
3.) Physical theft. This is to be accomplished in the long time frame while people are dealing with the tricks. Surprise everyone when they find out it is really gone. Use whatever works.
Using agents (read: patsies) to handle the first two steps is best, since it would help to slow divination attempts to find the mastermind.

The NPC |

Get a might Shaonti chief to knock the sun out of the sky with his bow where he will then put in a box. Later a magical black corvid will be drunk by the chief's daughter who will later give birth to him and he will trick the chief into giving the sun to the bird as a gift. Then he will reveal himself taking the sun and returning it to the sky...
Or just have good ol' Azzy trick Sarenrae into a prison and poof there goes the sun over Avistan/Garrund.

Zarkin Frood |

A special super-sized gate spell put in the way of the stars orbit about the center of the galaxy.
Given the our own solar systems speed of ~220kms about the the center of our own galaxy and our Sun's size it would take a little over an hour and a half to fully disappear through the gate itself.
That would give the PC's some time to stop whatever is powering this spell.

Depends on how literally scientific your world's "Sun" is. Is it a big eternal hydrogen fusion explosion? Or is it a mystic lamp set in the sky by the Gods, which is "stealable" as in classic mythology tales, where the hero has to recover the stolen Lamp of the Gods. Or maybe the Sun depends on a lamp, or an artifact, as the main characters found out the hard way in "Land Of The Lost."

Benchack the night stalker......great idea about the Chariot....I guess you don't even need to steal all of the chariot...just its wheels, and you can leave the chariot on a pair of cinder blocks :D
Torquar.... So that's what those pesky Mind Flayers were up to rewriting time! I played through A Darkness Gathering, and the beginning of Masters of Eternal Night...but never got to Dawn of the Over Mind. We knew about the stars going out....and we suspected that the Illithids had something to do with it.....Thanks!

Make a giant version of the portal gun, fire it at the sun, teleport the sun to a set of extremely specific coordinates in the universe, and watch as the US prepares to pay you billions of dollars to get their sun back within the 8 minutes it takes for the last of our light and warmth to reach earth.

Mortuum |

In the Nobilis system starting characters can do that with little trouble. They're hardly the most powerful entities around though, so their leaders will NOT be impressed with such antics.
In Pathfinder, I think the the first step of such a plan has to be acquiring a convenient artifact or taking the test of the starstone. Later steps depend greatly on the nature of the powers you gain from step one.
I guess you could try the Amaterasu thing? Make whichever sun deity retreat from the world?
If 3.5 content is allowed, be a vampire take Iron Heart Surge and step out into the daylight. Bingo, sun extinguished. Of course, your group will tear you to ribbons with their bare hands...

Theres a pretty epic running battle in Dawn of the Overmind that has the players fighting through the Illithid station that circles a sun. They get there on an Illithid spelljammer ship and have to move through the station section by section, while all around them a battle rages between the Illithid and an army of Red Dragon mounted Githyanki.
