The template we provide includes the item name as the first line. It's expected to be in the body. If you do not put the item name in the body, and including it would put you over 300 words, your entry *will* be disqualified, even if the word counter shows that you are at 300 words or less.

I just rejected four entries that did this. They are dead and gone, never to be voted on by the general public.

assuming that you follow the template and put your title in the main text box yes... if you ignore the template and just put your title in the little one line title box at top (IE do it wrong) then no it does not.

Note your entry should have your title twice, once in the separate title line at the top, and once again in the main text box (as per the template).

Right. What I'm asking though is if my (example-only) two word item name is counted as four words (once in the title, once in the item text), or as two words (once in the item text, not in the title).

Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

based on Vic's first post, I would say no...

he says "If you do not put the item name in the body, and including it would put you over 300 words"

indicating that if you did put it in the body you are golden.

but be sure to put preview it first... nothing like getting DQed because your word processing application counts words differently than Paizo's.

Good thing I saw this thread before getting too attached to my gnome contraption that looks somewhat like a tube with a tiny fez on one end but only because it has a cap which vaguely resembles a fez on that end in order to seal off the hollow internal cavity that stores the contraption's alchemical paste prior to someone activating the device and causing it to extrude said paste in such a manner that the person or persons activating it can then apply the paste to one or more small brushes which can thereafter be used in conjunction with water to clean the teeth of one or more creatures in such a manner that no writer could possibly hope to describe the many possible variations of the process and its consequences in any fewer than exactly three-hundred words, greater. We made it five. Come on, people!

Another word to the wise: If you were to just paste in the template and submit it (which, yes, one person actually did), it would count as 24 words.

If the word count on your entry is 28, and the title of your item is five words, you have done more than one thing very wrong.

Any hints about total number of entries so far with more that 28 words and less than 300?

Wait, someone just submitted the template and nothing else? That's one heck of an "oops" moment.

I was guilty of not putting my title in the body of the post last year. It still came in under the word count, but lesson learned.

I think I spent nearly 30 minutes with my item in preview this year, going over it again and again, aloud, before I hit the "submit" button.

I work on my item solely in the preview window. I did the same thing previous years. I would advise against doing that though, unless you want to accidentally submit your item before you intend to...

No, but they could code it to check and after you have pressed submit instead of preview, it can reply with

"Congratulations on submitting an auto DQ over word count entry, next year, please check your word count and don't be a plank again!"

The title being separate from the body confused me, in not putting the name of the spell in the body (I had it in the body in the first place but removed it before submitting). Although my entry is no where near 300 words, so this isn't a problem.

Since I didn't put the spell name in the body, is that a disqualification? (that would be the only thing I did wrong - I think)

I'm going to assume by not putting the spell in the body you actually mean you didn't put the item name in the [/i]body of the submission[/i]. If you're not over the word count, then it's not the end of the world, but it still reflects poorly on your item.

If you weren't clear on what to do, you had more than enough time to come onto the messageboards and ask. There's no way for us as voters to know (unless you make it to second round), but there's a good chance they're not going to correct it for you before showing us, and an equal chance that means we're not going to see the item name (though admittedly, either or both of those assumptions could be wrong, depending on what they decide to do)

Then again, if it's a really, really good item, then I think most voters will overlook something like a formatting error.

Dedicated Voter Season 6

I didn't participate last year, rather the year before, and I don't remember that separate title issue when I submitted in the past, so seeing it threw me - oh, well. I kind of wish the word 'body' wasn't labeled, it was that that threw me. Considering that the body of the spell would not in fact be inclusive of the spell's name (I find that format of labeling of the submission post very confusing). It would have been easier with just a standard reply post and no labeling at all.

That said, if it's that what negates my item as a possible winner, the problem isn't mechanical design or lack of item creativity, rather a forum board posting issue - which has nothing to do with game design. So I won't let it bother me.

I have the absolute minimum amount of time to participate in the rest of the contest if I do win, with my other existing development, design, and cartography workload for Kaidan - I did want to try, though.

Make absolutely certain you put all of the requirements and required words in your submission as well. I made the mistake of forgetting to put in "Craft Wondrous Items" as a requirement, and including it would have put me over. It was an honest mistake that cost me even having a chance. Be warned!

I went to d20pfsrd.com, then to any magic item, then copy/pasted that into a word doc, removed the actual items name, aura, etc - just to make sure it was exactly formatted, and that I didn't have to think about it, beyond filling in the info for my specific item. It made it much easier getting format correct - which is important, I know.

Yep, meant wondrous item name, not spell name - still flustered from messing up the submission post. :P

@Jacob W. Michaels - the 'zz's in the formatting of that seems odd to me, I worked better from copying it from d20pfsrd.com. When I created the item in word I put in the [b] stuff in Word so it was just a copy/paste into the submission block.

A piece of friendly advice for next year: Practice on the actual template - especially if it seems confusing to you.

EVERYTHING you need to get the formatting right is provided for you right here, whether it be the template, auto-reject advice or a line-by-line breakdown of a wondrous item stat block. Every time you go to an outside source, even one as reliable as d20pfsrd.com, you run the risk that their way of presenting the format is different from the way Paizo does it. Even looking in the printed book can sometimes get you in trouble. All caps in the title is a good example.

And for the love of Jebus, read the rules and FAQ, both for the contest and for the current round. They spell out the part about including the item name both places very clearly.

Showing that you know how to follow directions and do your homework is a major part of RPG Superstar. Both the judges and the voting public deduct major points for sloppiness. If you want proof, take a look at the comments for my Round 3 submission last year. My idea was considered very innovative by a lot of people, but I made a lot of mistakes that were plain dumb, and could easily have been caught if I had paid better attention to proper formatting. And I quite deservedly didn't advance.

So - be awesome, innovative AND use correct format.

Dedicated Voter Season 6

Understand and thanks for the feedback. The proper formatting of a magic item, I have a complete grasp of, only the actual submission mechanism of 'spell name here' and 'body' here, is what confused me - and oopsy, because I know that getting that right counts too, and I didn't. (I read all the rules before submitting, but did not think to look at these threads until afterward.)

And with the wondrous item name included, mine is only [REDACTED] words total.

It's good that you're taking this as a learning experience - that already puts you a cut above many other contestants.

Here's another important tip: DON'T mention the exact word-count of your submission. Breaking anonymity is grounds for immediate disqualification.
