Sell ring of force shield +8500 gp
Purchase ring of spell knowledge (shield) -1500 gp
Purchase potions of bull's strength (2) -600 gp
Craft circlet of persuasion -2250 gp
Craft shirt of immolation -4000 gp

Come out of it with 150 gp extra, +2 to your net AC with shield up, +3 to all charisma-based rolls, and the ability to grapple and immolate someone, or immolate something silly enough to grapple you (stacks with fire shield as far as I can tell).

Good advice, but a page of spell knowledge is cheaper and can be crafted.

EDIT: Instead of the circlet of persuasion, I bought him 3 more scrolls of heal, which can serve to keep him in a fight much longer than any of his foes could possibly want.

Dark Archive

True. I was trying to preserve Roshgog's image though, and I thought he might balk at having to pull out a page of spell knowledge just to cast shield, when before it was keyed to his ring.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

I think he'd balk more at wearing a dainty tiara. Besides, he already has scrolls, so I don't think he's worried about "being an orc that can read."

Dark Archive

Fair enough! :)

Ravingdork, if I send you a blasting Sorcerer, could you put it up with your if it's good enough?

If I like it, sure.

Cool. The basic concept has been rattling around in my head for a while now.

New artwork for the Raven King.

I actually need some advice. I have a character planned out who's very similar to the Raven King. Instead of taking Aberrant/Warp Touched he would be taking Shadow/Umbral levels 1, 9, and 15. I have also been considering Racial Heritage for him but I haven't made a solid decision on that yet. I was just wondering if you could give me a run down on the Raven Kings Feats in order. What I have in mind is a Human Shadow Dancing Archer that switches positions with his shadowy companions. I have been considering racial heritage Drow for spider climb and shadow caster feat. Could you help me out?

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Being a fighter with the ability to switch out feats, I couldn't really say what he got and when (since I generally don't build characters in a progression), though if you look at the requirements of many (particularly the eldritch heritage and critical feats) and take out all of the non-fighter bonus feats (such as his skill focus feats) you can get a general idea of what was taken and when.

Your concept sounds interesting, and I'm keen to see how it turns out.

Since shadow dancer is so tax heavy on feats, and so is being an archer. It would make the most since to be a fighter obviously but I was wondering if i should consider the weapon master or archer archetype for this build or just go straight fighter. Do you have any input on that?

Edit: Also wanted to say thanks for such a quick reply to my previous post.

Forget my previous post, the build is too tax heavy on feats.

About the JuJu Oracle Aroanna.

What about picking the Eldritch Heritage (arcane), the improved and the greater one for having another +2 DC and for having 3 more spells from the wizard/sorcerer's list?

Has anyone posted any Witch builds in the character emporium? I can't find them!

I'm not sure it would allow you to get cross-class spells in the way you think.

Also, that's a hell of a feat investment, coming in at four feats. I'm not sure she can even really spare one without serious detriment to her existing abilities.

She's about the undead hoard anyways, not super high DCs.

Portrait changes for for Akoran and Remy.

Absolutely, yes. I may make whole new characters, or create alternate versions of existing character, as time permits. I may even create one of my famous scenarios, as I've done for previous playtests (if time permits).

I am somewhat deterred from making those classes that are already expecting to undergo serious changes though, such as the arcanist. Minor changes I have no problem with, but I don't see the point in playtesting something that we know won't look anything like the final product.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Akoran has also had much of her equipment changed around, dividing existing items to save money and getting more ioun stones in return.

I would very much like to introduce our very first playtest character, Garr, a half-orc bloodrager who gained her strange powers shortly after escaping from a crazed fleshwarper who attempted to cross her strength with the speed of a choker.

All in all, I'd say she is far more interesting now than your typical barbarian.

EDIT: Sorry, I'm having difficulty getting the direct link for some reason, though she should be readily accessible in the character gallery.

I saw your post in the greater beastmass thread and thought I would give you a link to the original.

beastmass

I wonder how many of your characters will need to change nothing at all. I also wonder how low a level character you could build and still beat this thing. I am guessing 17.

I believe the Cracked Man uses one such prestige class.

Ravingdork, I've enjoyed looking at a bunch of the characters you have made. My favorite probably being Helegur. I have a couple of questions for you though.
1. How do you do your character sheet layouts? Are they a template you use or some character generation tool? I really like how they are easy to read and you have everything right there describing the abilities making them much easier to grab and go.
2. I have probably missed it in the slew of characters, but do you have any actual witches? I am looking at doing either Witch, Sorcerer, or Alchemist for an upcoming WotR campaign.

Last but not least thanks for sharing these awesome builds. I enjoy looking to them for inspiration for my own characters.

If you look under Roleplaying Tools you will find two different templates for your use. One is a slightly tweaked version of the other (not sure which) and but both are great. Save yourself a 'Blank' version, and then just keep copying the Template over and over for your characters. I've personally begun transcribing all of my characters over to the template as I find it so much easier to use. Being a GM myself, I find it tedious having to memorize multiple different stat-block templates to remember where everything is.

But then she is classed as a sorcerer

Thank you, completely missed this guy. Also I would like to point out a typo. Balasar Frolo (9th-level human holy tyant) I do beleive it should say tyrant.

Ravingdork wrote:

Is their any particular reason why he's level 19 and not 20?

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

How do you do your character sheet layouts?

I make them in Microsoft Word 2013 via preset styles that I created myself. Being a graphic designer, I've had some professional training in layout design, but I can't take credit for these since they are 98% Paizo's design (I added an encumbrance line and moved the languages towards the top, but those are about the only real differences).

Are they a template you use or some character generation tool?

Yes, there are templates, you can find them in the ROLEPLAYING TOOLS folder of my gallery. As far character creation tools, I've yet to find one that I liked (which is why I have my own to share).

One template is a slightly tweaked version of the other (not sure which) and but both are great.

Both templates should be identical. One is for older versions of Microsoft Word, while the other is for newer versions. I put them both up to ensure that people would be able to use them no matter what version they happened to be using.

I really like how they are easy to read and you have everything right there describing the abilities making them much easier to grab and go.

That's why I made them.

I have probably missed it in the slew of characters, but do you have any actual witches?

There is one, Kufu Barru. I have at least one other character, Hama, who is described as a witch, and is thematically a witch, but possesses only sorcerer levels. There are many other characters that could easily be described as witches.

I would like to point out a typo. Balasar Frolo (9th-level human holy tyant) I do believe it should say tyrant.

Thank you! The typos have been corrected.

Is there any particular reason why The Cracked Man is level 19 and not 20?

Yes. I didn't have any level 19 characters at that time. I was attempting to fill the void.

I swear you had a horizon walker somewhere in your gallery, or have I just gone mad?

I have been trying to roll an effective "golemancer" type and came across Obrist Lang. I have a few questions for you if you don't mind.

I think the rules for wearing constructs are clear, but I don't think I understand the benefit. There also seem to be some aspects uncovered.

From the SRD:
Construct Armor

Requirements: Craft Construct, Craft Magic Arms and Armor, animate objects, the construct modified must be the same size as the creator

CR increase: +1

Cost: 35,000 gp

This modification allows the construct to be worn like armor by its creator. So long as the creator wears it, the construct performs no independent actions, remaining under the control of the creator, and any attacks directed at the wearer first damage the construct. When a construct is destroyed while serving as armor, the wearer loses all the benefits, but regains all the hindrances until the armor is removed, which takes the same amount of time that removing breastplate armor does. If the construct is still active, the creator can order the removal of the armor with a swift action, at which point the construct leaves the creator’s space and enters a space adjacent to the creator. Donning construct armor takes a full-round action if the construct is still active. The creator cannot don a construct with this modification if the construct has been destroyed. The construct’s wearer retains his base attacks and saves. Construct armor counts as breastplate armor for purposes of determining AC, weight, Dexterity modifiers to AC, and chance of arcane spell failure.

1. Do you need to be proficient in armor to wear a construct as armor?
2. What armor type does it count as?
3. Do you get the benefit of its DR? Its NA?
4. Can we assume that you cannot wear armor under it?
5. Is it affected separately by AoE spells?
6. Can it be targeted separately from it's wearer by spells or attacks?
7. Does its inability to take indirect action keep you from using its modes of movement?
8. Do you get the use of any of its ability scores?

This character seems relatively popular, but I'm having a little trouble understanding its benefit vs its cost.

Benefit: Damage Resistance that can be scaled pretty high
Benefit: You can step out of it to have your own flanking buddy
Benefit: Utilizing its movement mode would be a benefit
Benefit: Getting DR on a wizard would be a benefit if you don't need proficiency

Disadvantage: You'll need to remove it early in combat because you're severely hampered if it's destroyed on you
Disadvantage: It takes three feats to have a suit at a reasonable level
Disadvantage: Creation is very expensive - you must make the construct and pay an additional 35,000 gp
Disadvantage: Once it's removed, you are left unarmored

I keep wanting to make a golem based character but keep running up against cost:benefit problems and this seems to be one of the worst cases. I'd love to make an arcane mechanik the way you used to be able to in Iron Kingdoms, but I'm not sure this is the way to do it.

Please help show me what I'm missing. 8)

PS: I like your characters a lot and am happy to share some of mine with you if you are interested. Since yours constitute an NPC codex of sorts, I think it would be very beneficial to have a small section on the bottom explaining how they are best used and what kind of encounters are good for them. If many of them already have this, my apologies.

Am I wrong to think that you're a bit short on rogues?

Hello RD,

I'm thinking of using your "raven king" as an antagonist in an upcoming game. He'll be part of an elite organization of assassins (he would be the "shadow raven", and I'm working on the "blood mantis"). Any problems? Any advice how to use him? I'll probably have to downgrade him a little (which might be difficult).

Obrist Lang does not wear construct armor. He wears an animated suit of armor. Similar concept, completely different rules.

MPCampbell wrote:

True construct armor, not what Obrist uses, counts as breastplate and thus would require medium armor proficiency to avoid penalties.

MPCampbell wrote:

I don't believe so, no.

MPCampbell wrote:

That seems like a fair assumption.

MPCampbell wrote:

I think it is counted as attended gear for the purposes of area spells and effects when worn, and thus is immune unless you roll a 1 on your save.

MPCampbell wrote:

Yes, but it would require a successful sunder maneuver.

MPCampbell wrote:

I would assume so.

MPCampbell wrote:

No.

The rules for construct armor have been clarified in the Official FAQ.

Using these characters in your games is the whole point of this thread. You're even welcome to change them up to better suit your setting.

Just be sure to give proper credit should it ever come up though, and if you like them a lot, tell your friends about us.

As for character advice? Never have him participate in a fight in which he doesn't have a distinct advantage. He's intelligent and not prone to making "typical villain" mistakes such as monologing at an inappropriate time (check out the Evil Overlord list for a decent start). Also be sure to study his varied abilities and have no less than five strong combat strategies with five more escape plans at any given time.

He has minions. Use them! They are a big part of his power. The cleric alone means he takes half damage from all forms of attacks. Stack that with the cleric using Lunar Veil to cripple most enemies AND granting him DR 10/- and save bonuses and suddenly he's a boss even if the cleric doesn't participate beyond that.

Sorry for the delay in answering of your questions. It seems this thread has stopped notifying me of new posts for some reason.

Hey RD,

It seems like the Fultor Spellbreaker pdf uploaded to your skydrive is an old version, as I saw an earlier reference in this thread to you fixing him. As it is now, he has Magic Resistant and Stubborn which both replace Hardy and also seems to be missing a Rage Power(should be 6) unless I'm blind...

Thinking about running a Barb//Battle Oracle Gestalt, so I was skimming some of your characters for ideas. Thanks again!

Hello Ravingdork,

Do you have any advice on trying to create my own Mystic Theurge? I noticed the only one you have (that I've seen) is Adin Lir, but is there any sort of idea that you have for progression with her or designing my own MT?

EDIT: One other question, I'm guessing that the reason you picked Bonded Object over Familiar is for the cheaper upgrade? Do you find that to be the best reason for picking it?

I'm new to Pathfinder and will definitely have to check this out in more detail when not so deprived of sleep o.O

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Thanks, Kadar. I will look into Fultor when I have some more time.

Vritra, for any and all mystic theurges, I recommend a standard 3/3/MT build. However be sure to ALWAYS take the Magical Knack (for your secondary spellcasting class) trait and membership into a generic Spellcasting Guild (found in Inner Sea Magic) for its Esoteric Training Ability (which you can have as early as 7th or 8th level if your GM follows the level expectation guidelines).

That will mean your spell properties (damage, range, duration, etc.) will function at full caster level for both classes. So a Wiz 3/Clr 3/MT 10 would have CL 16 with all her spells from both class spell lists. CL 17 if you add on things like an orange prism ioun stone on top of it.

However, thanks to Esoteric Training, your primary caster class ALSO has spells known and spells per day as if it were a straight caster. The above example mystic theurge would be able to cast 8th-level wizard spells. Your secondary caster class, on the other hand only lags 2 levels behind in terms of spells known and spells per day. In the above example, the mystic theurge can cast 7th-level cleric spells.

So at the peak of a mystic theurge's power (16th-level) you can expect to be casting 8th-level spells from one class, 7th-level spells from another, all at CL 17th.

Compare that to your traditional 16th-level spellcaster who can only cast 8th-level spells from a single spell list at CL 16th.

Because you run out of mystic theurge levels, the power wanes a bit after 16th-level, allowing single-classed casters to catch up a bit. Nevertheless, you will always be more versatile and be less reliant on the "5-minute work day" than they are.

That's my advice for anyone playing a mystic theurge.

Seems good.

4-6 would still suck to play, Magical Knack however... doesn't entirely solve that. It helps prevent you from struggling with DCs for your (presumably) Divine side.

If you wanted, you could try the early entry variation and start out with a Wiz 3/Cleric 1/MT 4 and simply end up retraining the two Cleric levels back in, but that does require a specific domain, or if you wanted to reverse it the Scryer school for Wizard.

That might end up a bit better since your Arcane side doesn't lag quite as bad and the 4-6 period gets much less difficult, and retraining brings you back up to speed for the 15th and 16th levels.

After 16th I'm not even sure what you would want to level in, assuming you got that far.

One other thing, what do you recommend as far as starting stats go? I was thinking of stating up a Samsaran Mystic Theurge, utilizing the +2 to Int and Wis and also adding some of the fun extra spells, and only maaaybe getting the SLA's from the race, dumping Charisma to try and produce more for the casting stats and help preserve his HP.

I'm guessing... Cleric to grab the Fate Inquisition, to get early access, then finishing the rest off with Wizard and MT.
