With FlatCon in the books, it is time to turn our attention to the next central Illinois convention, Winter War. We are really excited as it is the convention's 40th anniversary. We are actively working on the schedule of events and should have something posted very soon. With as many as 80 tables of PFS during the con, we will have A LOT of options for players/GM's to choose from. If you have any requests, please let me know.

I hope to see everyone there!

Yay! Vacation request submitted. This con made for a nice little birthday getaway this year and I've been looking forward to next year's for some time already.
I'd love to see 4-8, 4-10, 4-12 offered consecutively. I'm trying to play through all of the tier 7-11 scenarios of season 4 in order with a single character.
Also, I could run 4-EX and the special (assuming you're offering them and 4-EX stays on schedule).

Hey, you did ask for requests, and you didn't say they had to be reasonable. If not it could give me an excuse to go to OwlKHAAAAN a couple weeks later.

My unreasonable request is that you get the Paizo staff members who are going to Winter Fantasy to come to Winter War instead. ;)
I second this.
Or we could just wage a war this winter against winter fantasy. It can be called "The Winter War." Take all their dice. The ransom shall be a twinkie. No, two twinkies!

Two twinkies and a Paizo staff member to be named later. ;-)

*Makes plans to cause a national Twinkie recall in early to mid January.*

Will there be any modules offered or Eyes of the Tenses?
I am looking at those options. Eyes of the Ten is currently on the schedule as is the last three free RPG say modules. I was thinking of adding three modules (one each day) for those who are largely up to date with scenarios, but not sure. With the release of Thronkeep, it might make an appearance on the schedule as well. A lot depends on the player/GM response. To pull this off, we'll need roughly a 50% increase in both over last year's hugely successful effort.

I have no idea what the attendance is expected for Winter Fantasy, but I'm sure that if we (1) turn out to be a larger event, and (2) pay the travel and hotel costs for the Paizo staff, we could get someone to attend Winter War. Of course, Mike would be the primary target for obvious reasons, but I am a fan-boy of Erik Mona. Hmmm, now if I could just get him to come out and GM his level of Thornkeep... :-)

I cant say anything for the travel costs, but I'd be willing to split the hotel room bill with you if it would give Erik the push to make it out to the con. Assuming I would get to play at his table of Thornkeep anyway. ;)

I smell a "Get Erik Mona to Winter War" Kickstarter (or, more accurately, an Indiegogo).
And, incidentally, count me in to the contribution pool. ;-)

We are considering whether or not to offer the Runcarved Key GenCon special. Also, we are thinking that a slot other than Saturday night might be better. After two days of gaming and a full day (Saturday) most players/GMs are reaching exhaustion. Perhaps another slot would make for a better experience. We were thinking either Friday night or Sunday morning.
Any feedback on (1) should we offer it, and (2) where it should be on the schedule?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

If you do the big special Friday night, people who are driving in from a long distance Friday evening after work (possibly including me driving in from Chicago - too early to tell at this point) will miss it. And generally speaking, gamers are more likely to be night people than morning people, so Saturday night wins over Sunday morning for that reason.
In other words, I think the reasons why Saturday night has traditionally been the time for the big special events at cons are still valid, so I say stick with it.

As a counter point to this, having the special on Friday or Sunday opens Saturday up more for module play. I think this is great as I think offering modules helps distinguish a con from just being a big game day.
I think it would be worth trying. My preference would be Friday night.
It seems to be that Sunday could have problems with player and GM availability as well unless it's run with a hard end time, though perhaps less so compared to Friday.

The more I review the scheduling, the more likely it is that we will not offer the special. Between GenCon and a couple of nearby conventions that have offered it, I expect the turnout would be less than expected. And it does create scheduling conflicts with other multi-slot events like modules and series scenarios. I hope to have a final schedule released later this week. Some of the items to finalize include:
- offering the first three levels of Thornkeep
- Eyes of the Ten
- winter-based scenarios like Frozen Fingers of Midnight, Shades of Ice, & Frostfur Captives
- return to a classic series, Devil We Know
- all season four scenarios
If anyone has any specific requests, feel free to email me at pfs.illinois@gmail.com and I will see what I can do.

Earlier this afternoon, I tried to check the prices on rooms in the hotel the con is in during the dates of the con, just to get an idea of how much it's gonna cost. It told me there were no available rooms.
Does the con have the entire room rented out, and the only way to get a reservation is to be attending the con?

I have received a lot of requests to share a hotel room to save some money, more requests than would be comfortable in a single room. So, I would ask that if anyone is interested in, or looking to, rooming with someone for the con, please post here. I would hate to see someone miss out for lack of space. Thanks

Okay, the schedule has been submitted. It should be approved and visible on the Winter War website by November 10th which is the first day you can begin to register for events.
I will be using the Warhorn site to manage GM assignments, but all player registrations must go through the main Winter War website. If you want to volunteer to GM, please register on the warhorn site, review the schedule, and send me an email with your selections. I will update the roster for visibility as often as possible. GM requests will be first come-first serve.
GMs will be expected to bring the scenario, chronicle sheets, printed handouts/faction missions, and any game-aids you intend to use (minis, maps, terrain, etc.). I will be providing the roster/reporting sheets. I will also provide pregens (as needed) as well as new player cards.
I will be submitting the scenario requests for GMs to Paizo during the 1st week of January to provide 3+ weeks of prep time, so please volunteer prior to that. I will still take volunteers right up to the start of the convention, but you will receive less advanced time to review the scenario and provide the players an outstanding experience.
If you have any questions or wish to volunteer, please email me at pfs.illinois@gmail.com

GM requests will be done through email directly to me and I will enter them into the Warhorn site for tracking and visibility.
We are not using Warhorn for player sign ups for two reasons:
(1) The convention uses event tickets for events, so players must register with the convention in order to play (or buy generic tickets on site)
(2) Since the convention uses event tickets, opening Warhorn up for GM's to sign up, would also open up the players to sign up. That would lead to a lot of confusion as to who is entitled to the seats at the table. We tried to use Warhorn for player visibility last year and it create a lot of problems.
The Winter War website should be opening up online registration, including event tickets, soon, but I am not on the convention staff so I don't have an exact day/time. Once I see it go live, I will post it. I also encourage everyone to keep an eye on it.

Just to let everyone know, the Hawthorn has WiFi through out the hotel and gaming rooms. Also we have several fast food places within walking distance (next door). For those getting rooms there, they have a great breakfast room. As for GM slots, better hurry cause good ones are filling up. Hope to see you all there.
