101 to 150 of 160 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | next > last >>

1. That depends - only advanced skills need the first skill point for "activation". Training non-career skills is much more expensive than career skills.

2. a) very short "summary" of the career
b) sometimes they interact with other things (e.g. magic items that can only be used by a character with the career trait XY)
c) they are important during career tranisition. For each equal career trait the transition is 1 pt. cheaper.

So some of the mechanics are not all that different from 2nd ed when it comes to career progression then? It sounds like the major changes are in how things are resolved once the dice hit the table.

Zyren - sleeping baby on me tonight making it hard to review the cards and book, so will hopefully get to it over the weekend.

Hey guys,

I put a dice reference at the end of my profile in case any one might need it...I know I will :)

Yeah, we surely need one...you did a good job there, wonder how it will feel during play.

Blackfire Pass looks pretty badace. It will be on the short list of books to pick for sure. With the aid of the other fellows my dwarf is coming together. Feytharn and I will have a connection in our backstory, but we haven't hammered it out yet.;)

Ok, good stuff.

You will most probably be from one of the new holds in the Grey Mountains.
The closes is Karak Azgaraz, only some days away from Ubersreik.

Zyren,

my profile's all done, added a little backstory but left it open ended as I think you said you were going to bring us all together somehow

Yeah, a very open backstory :)

What I would like to know - and this goes out to all of you:

What are your chars motives?
What gods does he/she worship?
What does he/she think about Chaos/Skaven?
What are your attitudes towards elfs and dwarfs?
What is your attitude towards magic?
Does your char have long time friends or adversaries?
Do you have a special connection to a certain item, place etc.
Where was your character born, spend his youth etc.

Put my answers at top of Profile. Let me know if you need anything else.

Such questions help alot I think - I now have a much better idea of Mareike!

I've gotta reformat my sheet. I was doing it offline and it did not transfer well. But, I did get the alias started and a jump on the back story.

Backstory Draft:

The Book of Grudges is a place no being should ever find his name. Dwarves have long memories and carry feelings as hard as Gromil for those they place in those woeful pages. Most Grudges find themselves buried beneath those of that came before them, for no Grudge may be satisfied before its predecessor has so been satisfied. Ensuring lesser instanding, but not intensity, Grudges are not buried beneath lofty dreams such as the reclaiming of all dwarven lands or the total eradication of the Ratmen who lurk below their feet, the Stoutanvil Clan for centuries has borne this task with pride. While other members of there race produce stout miners, craftsmen and warriors, the Stoutanvils have consistantly produced the best hunters of any Grudgesworn enemy a client could afford to pay for.
While most of the clans clients are of the merchant class, whom have no real rights to place Grudges on their own, they have done work from time to time for the royalty. Proud of their quasi necessary niche in dwarven society the Stoutanvils have done what must be done to continue their hold on that position. While they refuse to endanger their honor, they are not beyond using any means to crush their enemies. The Skaven of Clan "v" have always been a particular thorn in the family's side to thier constant interference with the Mining Guilds search for Gromil. The youth of the clan are often tasked with the bringing back of clanrat heads for easy gold from many of the guild leaders and foreman.
Havin taken great pride in destroying rats and eventually greater foes, Fernis came to rise above his cousins being trusted with greater and greater quarries. Heading out of the mines and into the Old World, the young Bounty Hunter proved himself just as capable in the world above. No target escaped his grasp. Possessing a great disdain for magic, Skaven, and beings of Chaos, Fernis has at times gone farther than his elders have given him authorization. This imprudence has landed him in trouble more than once, but they have always paid off and led to continued impetuous behaviors. In order to keep the beardling on the right path, his father took it upon himself to offer the young dwarf's services to the runesmiths. It just so happened that their guild was sending a young apprentice out into the land of manlings and would benefit from the company of an experienced guide.

Since Fey and I will be working together,I left that bit at the end for him to add a piece. I have to truly flesh him out still, I wanted to get something on paper. I will answer the questions in greater detail today.

Scarab Sages

I won't come around until mid-next week, sorry, much work, PC troubles, sick, all together in one neat package.

The revised background and the answers to the questions are posted at the end of my profile, repeated here for convience.

Background:

Background: Born the seventh son of a seven son. Great-Grandfather is a very old minor baron with an estate near Altdorf. His mother is related to Lord Ricard Aschaffenberg (Sister, cousin, whatever works for the GM). Franz has been invited to see the new hunting lodge his "Uncle" has aquired. The trip is a reward to Franz for his graduation from a Pistolkorps. Seeing Franz is out of shot, Uncle Ricard gives him some, telling him to be careful, beastmen destroyed a village recently. Franz is at the bottom of the nobility about to fall off entirely; needs money and a respectable position.

Limitation: Has no money, armour, or horse. Needs all three to get a calvary slot and start his military career. Rich in status, broke in funds.

GM - Q and A:

Franz enters the room where the final exam takes place, the one on character. He knows he did well enough on the studies, though he still rides like a sack of potatoes, according to the riding master.

The elderly lord, still looking strong in his ceremonial armour, headmaster of the Heavenfall Pistolkorp's academy, looks sternly at the young cadet. He thunders, "Do you think you are worthy to be called a Pistolier of the Empire?" In a firm voice, Franz replies, "I do, my Lord Headmaster."

The headmaster smiles coldly, "We shall see. What do you want, boy? How do you see your future?" Franz says, "To do honour to my families' name. In light of the fact my family has more sons than gold, I will win, honourably, my armour, and mounts, and someday the silver spurs of knighthood." The headmaster looks bored, "Typical answer, dull as you are."

The elder continues, "The gods, who do you worship and why?" Franz answers, "The god of the Empire, Sigmar, I hold dearest to my heart and give proper respect to all the gods. Not Renald, of course, no real god would encourage disrespect for the right and just nobility, raising defiance from the smallfolk." The Lord looks indifferent to Franz, and goes on.

"What do you know of Chaos and these reports of Skaven?" Franz looks confused as he replies, "Chaos is the enemy of all, seductive and relentless, it must be opposed with heart and fire at all costs. The rumours of Skaven, are just ignorant peasants seeing some beastman with big teeth and screaming of an army of evil coming to get them, as though they'd be bothered. Nonsense."

The questions come quickly now, "What do you think of our Imperial allies: the elves and dwarves?" Franz thinks for a second, "I've barely met elves, I saw one at The Baron's court, he seemed haughty to me but what the crown has decreed is the law, they are allies." Franz smiles, "The Dwarves, since the days of Sigmar, have been our most stalwart allies, strong and fierce, a rock we need."

"Magic, what do you think of it?" Franz makes the Sign of the Hammer. "Dangerous - messing around with Chaos, burn the lot, of course some wizards are protected by the Empire's decrees, that must be obeyed." The lord asks, "And of priests? Franze looks shocked, "Priests don't do foul magic; the gods hear the prayers of their priests and send their blessings." Franz is very upset at the thought of priestly virtue being reduced to chaos or parlour tricks.

"Who are your friends?" Franz smiles, "I have a number about but they'll now be moving on as I will, I do thank Grimmbeard Stoutanvil for his friendship, his encouragment got me through his tough riding course, even though I don't meet his high standards; It's amazing to see a master cavalier, that is of the people of the mountains, hired here, I'm sure, to inspire us to do better."

"Your enemies, then." Franz considers, "I don't think I've made any real enemies, most people tend to like me. I guess Gustav Brune still dislikes me for breaking his nose, but it was a fair fight." The Headmaster snorts, "Over the attentions of a woman, not the behavior we expect from our cadets."

"What do you treasure in objects, places, people; where and how did you grow up to bring those affections and how do they shape you today?" Franz ponders, "I'm the seventh son of a seventh son, I guess I've always been lucky, I have no objects that mean more to me than they would to any other, the home I was raised in is, of course, close to my heart. What I treasure most is my family, I have many brothers, dozens of first cousins and nephews and nieces, hundreds of slightly more distant cousins and of course, The Baron, my great-grandfather, as old as the sky, straight and strong. To honour them, to add more to the family legacy than longevity and progeny. The quiet country estate that the Aschaffenbergs gave as my mother's dowry is a great source of fond memories. My father's labours as an manager of our estate and others, and the work he's done in many offices, taught me the importance of duty, lessions I'll always have with me."

The old man rises, "Flattery isn't needed, you're much like the others, young and headstrong, but so are most of our graduates, you pass, here's your ring, do not dishonour it or me. Depart here - cadet no more, leave as a Pistolier of the Empire." Franz bows formally, "Thank you, for all you've done for me, Great-Great Uncle, be well." Franz withdraws, with courtly grace. The younger brother of The Baron, turns to the next file, to summon another young man to terrorize and graduate, with eight decades of life's experience to draw on.

I hope that works for you, GM. If you have any further questions let me know.

That was a very atmospheric answering of the questions - as in mareike's case it helps me alot to picture your characters - and I think it helps you too.

@ Fernis and Fey:

I'm really looking forward to reading your combined background story :)

Me too, lol. I much prefer the Warhammer dwarf to any other dwarf. From it sounds like, so does Fey. Lots of good Grennskinning and Skaven bashing to come. I have seen that there will be an awesome potential for some serious soul searching in my character development. The choice between Ironbreaker and Trollslayer will be a hard one. The woes that await me if I fail some task in these adventures will send me to the Slayer cult with ease. Fey, I hope you make it through this one seeing how I am tasked with your safety, lol.

Glad to see Fernis again Bilbo, greetings from Volta. They live again!

Yes, Warhammer dwarves are the stereotype done right, they feel real not tacked on.

Haha, I have a couple of dwarves laying about that make it easy to recycle names. Fernis was built with a Warhammer dwarf in mind anyway so it was an easy pick. This is going to be a blast. I am hoping that the mailman has my book today so I can finish up my and then focus on my tie in with Fey's dwarf.

Good to see you here, too Veshly.

Is this a party of undead? 3/5 have played together before?

Blerg - rough monday, but I'll try and nut out things tomorrer.

Hahaha, I have played with them all in one campaign or another. Six degrees of Bilbo Bang-Bang, lol.

I haven't seen a Warhammer campaign to last on this boards, though.

You haven't run one yet either, Z, lol.

Yeah, not lasting campaigns aren't my handwriting :)

Hahaha, too true. Go hard or go home. That famous German efficiency at work. ;)

Yeah took a quick look at your other campaigns ZZ, impressed , one is over 6000 posts. Plus I love your descriptive style. Looking forward to getting to 6000 posts with you guys on this one :)

You will not be disappointed.

yeah, and we have the longest OOC thread of all 7.5k and counting^^

Boom.

I onder how many characters will die over the course of this one? Warhammer is so much more deadly. Not to mention all of the down right horrible stuff that just happens to your character. Damned Corruptable Powers. lol.

Well we've got out work cut out for us then :)

characters rather become unplayable (like in Cthulhu games) than just die :)

Ahhhh, I see.

Dotting and going to locate FRP books.

Is that a quiz?

Hey, who are you - interested in joining?

This is Mark - I'll be repurposing this alias.

Queries:
What are your chars motives?
Zadlu believes that all creatures need to be blessed with Morr's hand as they pass from this world. He is in the world so as to place himself nearest to the suffering and be able to best minister the word.

What gods does he/she worship?
Morr obviously and exclusively.

What does he/she think about Chaos/Skaven?
These creatures may need the assistance of steel so that they might be hastened to Morr's blessing.

What are your attitudes towards elfs and dwarfs?
Suspicious of elves and their alien ways. Dwarves are seen more neutrally, but Zadlu does not approve of their importance on oath and grudge.

What is your attitude towards magic?
Dangerous and fickle.

Does your char have long time friends or adversaries?
No adversaries - and his friends were all left behind at the monastery where he was trained in the word.

Do you have a special connection to a certain item, place etc.
A death shroud that he uses in the longer rites. It was his father's and is the only relic he has remaining of the man.

Where was your character born, spend his youth etc.
Not too sure on this one - but he would have been raised in a cloistered environment.

His name sounds very very Sylvanian!

Q and A:

What are your characters motives? To continue bringing in the crowns to keep his family in the elevated status they have enjoyed for centuries. His greatest desire is to find a place in the Ironbreakers.

What gods does he worship? The range of dwarven dieties.

What does he think of Skaven/Chaos? He hates them both with an intensity considered extreme even by dwarven standards.

What are his attitudes towards elfs and dwarfs? He finds elfs flighty and annoying. Dwarfs are by far the chosen beings forged the very earth upon which they walk. Humans are considered decent enough, but not hardy enough or resistant to the ways of Chaos.

What is his attitude toward magic He finds magic the way of the weakling. Smething to hide ones failings behind.

Any long time friends or adversaries? Fernis has both. A rival of his father's has been a constant nay-sayer of the beardling's impetuous ways. Fernis also has a life long friend in the Armourer's Guild he has often called on to repair his equipment after jobs.

Does he have any connection to a special item, place, ect.?
Yes. His great-grandfathers shield. Emblazoned with an ancestor mask of the founding member of the family.

Where was he born, raised, ect.?
I will fill this in after chatting with Fey. I assume we will be coming from the new Karak as a result of our mission outside our home hold.

Bilbo:

Yes, Karak Azgaraz will be your home Karak.

@ All: Now that we are only waiting for Fey's character, shall I begin with writing introductions?

I'll also open the campaign thread then.

Not sure about derosiere - does anyone know him?

Scarab Sages

As far as I remember, Karak Azgaraz is very tight about runic equipment and their runesmiths, has this changed in 3rd edition, If not you might need to supply me with an idea or two why they should send out an apprentice runesmith to the human lands.

edit: also, I don't own the players guide and my box isn't there yet. With only the rulebook I have practically no idea about actions, talents, runes and all the other neat stuff that the cards explain. If we start now, don't expect my character do do much besides socializing.

Aside from that, my character draft should be there later this day or tomorrow.

@ Fey: Did you see the talents I posted for you?

Are you mixing up Karaz Azgaraz and Karak Azgal?

Karak Azgal was very rune-focused in 2nd edition, but Azgaraz is rather generic by now and I think it wasn't even mentioned in 2nd edition?!

Scarab Sages

Maybe - I don't have 2nd esition material at hand. I try to do all (including the bits of my backstory) from memory, so please feel free to clean up any mixups I create.

Yes, I have seen the talents, and I will chose from them - still as far as I can see, I will miss half the rules until I have access to the cards and the dwarven rule I have ordered.

By the way, what characteristics do I have to ''drop' for knowledge of runes? Are they talents?, Skills?

Please do!!! :)

I still need to spit and polish... but I'm ready for the meatgrinder ;)

Azgaraz seems to be a new Karak made up of hot-headed beardlings seeking to show off how tough they are. I don't remember any mention of the hold outside of 3rd ed.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Me neither, and while some of them are pretty hot-headed they can never reach the craziness of Karak Kadrin!

Appearance: At the studio of the least expensive portrait artist with acceptable reputation, stands a man having his image painted, a gift of his Uncle to the man's mother. A young, rounded, tanned face is topped by a broad, fashionable, scarlet chapeau that vainly tries to corral the luxurious black curly locks that fall down beside his clean-shaven cheeks. A maroon military jacket of the finest cloth clads his chest, his right hand holding a pistol across the chest, his left a rapier, across the waist. Black hose and riding boots, are out of the paintings frame but complete the image of new minted Pistolier.

Post away!

Updated my character, added the shot and powder, added appearance section.

Rough draft. I still need to know what i have to change to aquire at least some knowledge of runecraft.

Q&A:

What are your chars motives?
Aquiring knowledge - mostly knowledge of the history of the dwarves, but anything tangential is fine and interesting and...ok, almost any knowledge!
Secrets of ancient runecrafting would of course, be most treasured.

What gods does he/she worship?
The Dwarven ancestors, foremost Grungnir.

What does he/she think about Chaos/Skaven?
They chaos is the most dangerous enemy, no question - but it is also intriguing. We can only overcome this enemy if we learn about it - unless we do we probably won't even know what we have to fight.

What are your attitudes towards elfs and dwarfs?
Elves are traditionally considered ...nonallies, if not enemies, but what is behind this tradition? Shouldn't the elves be considered to be on the same side in the big picture? Rangnir is at least willing to learn befor he starts to hate. Dwarves are the heart of Rangnis world, even if some dwarves wouldn't see that considering his demeanor.

What is your attitude towards magic?
A dangerous force, very strange and alien to the dwarves. But the shere impact magic can leave on the world and thus on history makes it a fascinating matter to inquire about - perhaps best from a pure theoretical point of view though.
Does your char have long time friends or adversaries?

Do you have a special connection to a certain item, place etc.
Where was your character born, spend his youth etc.

Born and raised in his Karak, probably a bit pampered (for a dwarf, anyway)

If he can aquire runic skills or even a runic item, that might be something he feels a connection to.

No connection he didn't clash with, really - Although he would not consider any of those clashes to be serious. His masters and teachers alway left a great impact on him, and he continues to strive for their amount of wisdom and knowledge - they should just accept that if he looks for the truth aside from their teachings, he might add to the trove of dwarven knowledge, while following their teachings would at best add to his own knowledge.

Feel free to make corrections, I work from memory with only the basic rules to go with, yet.

So please double check my sheet. I have been hammering it out as I read the rules, so I may be mistaken on some of the purchases.

I was hoping to buy a superior quality shield with one of my gold coins to reflect his hierloom item. I figured it give him a greater reason to have a special item. I have put 2 points in Wealth to obtain the funds.

Spent 11 points on Characteristics
Spent 2 points on Wealth= 2gp and some decent gear
Spent 2 points on Skills= 3+1specialization
Spent 2 points on Talents= 2 Talents
Spent 3 points on Actions= 4 Actions

Working out talents, skills, and actions now. SHould all be in sheet by time you are back on here, ZZ.
