mantou, or Chinese steamed bread, the name of which literally translates to "barbarian heads" for reasons that no one can explain to me.

Maybe if he had a more pleasant name people would be nicer to him.

Today-- a big slice of lasagna left over from last night's dinner, some salad (also left over), two apples from the orchard across town, and a pot of jasmine green tea.

Last night I left a whole chicken smeared on mustard and creamy honey (it's a denser, whiter, softer kind of honey you get when you whip it enough), which I'll throw into the oven with some well-cooked asparagus, onion, and sliced carrots with just a bit of sugar on them to get that hint of caramelization on the outsides. That should last me for two or three days.

And for dessert, I'm passing by my local favourite pastry shop to get a marzipan queen's arm.

I once ate a queen's arm.

Eat arms? *munches on swords*

I know, right? These humans and their weird eating habits.

Sandwiches with pate and fresh lettuce. Apple for dessert.

Microwaved ravioli between two meetings.
If upgraded with one half of a habanero pepper, they aren't that bad, actually...

German pea soup with fresh bread.

Leftover chicken from yesterday.

A gyro and some french fries

Homemade Bacon and Egg Croissant, with a healthy dose of Chickory Coffee. I guess that's kind of like breakfast, but since its 1 pm...

Some leftover mussel chowder over brown rice, a salad, two apples and a pot of jasmine tea.

Greek food is the other food that I miss most in China. I was thinking of making some tzatziki the other day but then I discovered that all the yoghurt here essentially has the viscosity of water. Homes here also never have ovens, so I can't make Gigantes or Moussaka either. It is very saddening.

Breakfast: Ermahgerd! Berkern Perncerks

Late Lunch: Another batch of percerks and two screwdrivers

Now: Nap

Cashew chicken. Grocery store does a decent Chinese bar.

And I actually managed a few minutes of not failing with chopsticks this time!

Leftover Hungry Howie's. Steak Sub and cheese breadsticks.

Scarab Sages

leftover chinese cabbage and potatoes warmed up as a gratin with bacon and cheese sauce.

I like the sound of a lunch that involves two screwdrivers.

Had glaced pork chops with spring rice, and pineapple for dessert.

Maize.

Sandwich, chips, cheese stick, pickle slice. Same thing I ate Mon and Tues. I feel like I am back in school again with a sack lunch. Except no pudding...

Half an apple.

We had a chili cook-off here at work today. I had a bowl each of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, then picked one other batch at random.

Needless to say, my wife will not be happy this evening.

Gonna drive out and see what I feel like getting. Nothing immediately springs to mind, other than I don't want pizza.

I'm suddenly thinking Sonic.

Which place you got with your brain-chili?

That is more what actually happened.

Fish and mashed potatoes.

Last night I tried to make a pineapple and banana slurpy and used salt instead of sugar by accident. It tasted like soap.

It's better than the time I used sand instead of powdered bread when making fried chicken, though.

Closest I've gotten to this was adding powdered sugar instead of spare flour when the Thanksgiving gravy was too thin. Wasn't bad tasting, but didn't have the thickening result we expected... and then quickly learned why.

Leftover tofu-and-tomato curry over rice noodles, an escarole and carrot salad, a pot of jasmine green tea, two apples, and a chocolate chip cookie.

(Someone was nice enough to leave a plate of cookies in the break room today! Thanks, anonymous coworker!)

Either KFC or BK... no home made stuff today :'(

Sir, you may be the world's greatest expert when it comes to olive oil, but stay out of the kitchen.. :)

Hey, maybe I'll stumble upon a new construction material by accident when trying to make an apple pie.

Why would you store sand next to your breadcrumbs?

Hey, some of Klaus' (or should it be Klaus's?) previous lunches sounded quite interesting...

How one confuses sand for powdered bread, however? Yeah, yeah, they have a similar texture, I get it. But what the hell sand did in the kitchen in the first place?

"Klaus's" is correct. Singular possessive. "Klaus" is a singular - a proper noun - thus regardless of its ending consonant should be made possessive with the addition of "'s". ' alone is reserved for plural words ending in s.

I had absolutely no idea it worked that way for proper nouns. As I always say, "Every day you meet someone new, you make something new or you learn something new was a day well worth it".

As for the sand thing: It was about 10 years ago. My little sister had been working on a model for school, and she had stored very fine sand -among other things- using tupperware in the kitchen. She just happened to use the exact same kind of tupperware we used to keep powdered bread.

So I put out the ingredients for the chicken, and then turn to pick the powdered bread, in the haste accidentally picking up the sand instead.

My dad ended up calling it "Pollo a la Playa" ("Beached Chicken"), a playword on "Pollo a la Plancha" ("Grilled Chicken").

Liberty's Edge

I had one of those giant costco muffins for lunch today . . .

I like that story, Klaus. It's way better than the image I had in my head of matching canisters across your countertop:

Flour - Sugar - Salt - Sand - Breadcrumbs - Rat Poison

Today...today I go to Mutt's Amazing Hot Dogs. It's footlong Friday!

No idea what I'm getting today. I'll just grab something near the office. Maybe Chinese; there is a ridiculously multicultural Chinese place I often go to. It's owned by a Chinese woman married to a German nationalized as Chilean, the cook is South Korean, the man in charge of the counter is Peruvian, the cleaning lady is from Argentina, the guys who tends the tables are all Colombian, the bar is tended by a Cuban and the delivery guy is from Bulgaria (and plays a mean accordeon).

The food is excelent, in any case, and they all greet me with hugs, as I've been going there since I was like 10 years old.

That, my friend, is priceless!

That place sounds amazing!

The closest I have to a place like that is a local family-owned deli that's been in business since 1961. My wife, daughter and I go there for breakfast just about every Sunday before church, and have been for almost 15 years. It's not too far from my office, and I drop by for lunch a few times a month, too.

We know the owners so well, we were among the select few "deli regulars" that were invited to the owner's granddaughter's bat mitzvah.

Oh, and for lunch today: leftover Chinese take-out from last night: some chicken and broccoli, half a pork egg roll, and hot-and-sour soup. Also a fresh orange an a banana.

The results? A footlong Chicago dog. Oh god I'm in a food coma right now.

Now I want to see Gonzo as the lead in Pollo a la Mancha.
