Is Force damage an energy type or a damage type?

Just wondering if a fire elemental sorcerer could turn magic missile into some kind of fire missile, or if he'd need Elemental Spell to do that.

I wouldn't see why not. Force is kind of like the "king" of all energy types. Hurts incorporeal creatures, bypasses DR, and there are no resistances to it, however no one is especially vulnerable except incorporeal creatures.....

Eh, long story short I would allow it.

He's talking about the reverse, force -> fire. You can use Elemental Spell to do that, amusingly it doesn't gain the fire descriptor though.

"You may replace a spell’s normal damage with that energy type or split the spell’s damage"

it seems like the answer is afirmative. It says the normal damage, so if the spell do damage (of any type) then the damage can be converted to elemntal damage.

I've seen a GM allow Force as a energy type, it swiftly unbalanced the game.
Force is very specifically its own special type of damage, not an energy type. No variable energy-related spell or magic item names Force.

I've gone down this path; as tempting as it seems, don't go.

Force is special type of damage and isn't energy damage.
