Wow. You game for almost twenty years, and you know what thought never occurs?

How do you clean your dice?

Eww. The knowledge that I have NEVER cleaned my dice is gross. Meanwhile, as I stare at these germ ridden things, I wonder how one cleans them?

Now, I'm sure people will have lots of answers, (and that is cool!) but my question actually pertains to: how do you clean LOTS, like, lets say, three or more pounds of dice worth, all at once?

Better yet, what should someone NOT do when cleaning their dice?

Grand Lodge

Bowl, hydrogen peroxide, strainer. Done.

Dark Archive

How do you get rid of the grime though? (Unless hydrogen peroxide does that...) You know, that black build up on them, from years of dead human skin and pencil lead?

I never cleaned my dice and I have to confess that, prior to your thread, I never thought about it.

What could work is the stuff you clean your computer display with or just Isopropyl alcohol if you happen to have that.

Disclaimer: I don't really know whyt dice are mado of and while I often work with solvents of many kinds and with plasics I can't guarantee that nothing bad will happen. So try with dice you don't hold too dearly.

Dark Archive

I think rubbing alcohol is too caustic, and worry that it would remove the paint and degrade the plastic, causing them to chip.

Grand Lodge

Hydrogen peroxide will take away the grime.

The Exchange

Soap and water.

I don't wash my dice. I wash my hands after every use.

My wife doesn't approve. She thinks one should do both: Wash your dice, AND was your hands.

I roll my dice with my mouth to avoid getting dirty hands.

Are there really any other options for a T-Rex?

Swish some hydrogen peroxide in there as well, and you will have clean dice and a cleaner mouth.

I let mine soak in a glass of windex. Shines them up nice.

Clean them! No, you're all missing the trick... it's an excuse to buy some more!

The Chessex distributor screwed everyone in Colorado (that's the story I was told anyways); none of the gaming stores carry dice anymore unless its from their old inventory.

Which percentage do you use?

Where I am you can get it for medical use with 2-3%.
Stonger versions for lab use are restricted because you can use it to manufacture bad things ;)

Grand Lodge

3% is fine. You just let it soak for about a hour, then place in strainer, rinse, and air dry.

Fine, thanks. So no need to take them to the lab I work at.

By the way ultrasonic cleaners for glasses could work as well. For peapole who have something like that.
At lot of ideas to try out with old dice.

The last time I cleaned my dice ... Well I have a family and kids do the darnedest things. My loving son tried to combine my two most Favorit things as a surprise for me (any other explanation hurts my head to much) He took my dice and dumped all 7 sets into the butter container from the refrigerator.

I had to scoop out my buttered dice into a strainer and then I place the strainer in the shower with straight hot water running so I could spend the next ten minuets educating my 4 year old son on best ways not to Upset daddy. after that it was as simple as drip dry and sort. (I think I am still missing a few dice. they do pass right?)?

I try hard not to eat chips and roll dice. Little doritos bits are gross.

Swish them around you mouth a bit, problem solved

I've never had any dice actually get dirty enough to clean per say. Since I'm the only person who handles my dice, the germs are all mine anyways. Besides, if you are that worried about germs, think about the last time you sanitized your door knobs or pencil/pen or car door handle (or your keys) ect...

Don't nom on your hands between meals and wash your hands before you eat, and don't go from the cheetos to the dice, that's disgusting, orange dust in the pips and all.

Sczarni

I just clean them with a bit of dish soap and hot water. Don't scrub or the number fill its will come out.

We bought a bag that you use to wash panty hose (its like a mesh bag with a zipper) then put then in the dish washer.

Worked great came out clean as can be.

Handful of dice, one depress on the dishsoap dispenser, rub hands together with dice between, run under hot water. Drop in dishtowel to dry. Done.

I usually just keep my hands clean and that keeps my dice clean.

I have never cleaned my dice. I've never seen any buildup of dirt or grime that would require it. Once in a great while if a die rolls into something, I might have to wipe it off, but otherwise, this has simply never been an issue.

Of course, now you're making me wonder.... Next time I open my dice case I'm going to be looking at them more closely...

Unless your dice have petrochemicals on them a short soak in soap and water with a nice swish around should be fine. You can dry them with a big towel to further remove grime or just air dry.

My horror is now on the rise. Picturing rougly the same two pounds of dice rubbi together and among the hands of dozens of gamers and environments for nearly a decade.

To be fair... where are those "disgusting germs" coming from? You. Right. Your grubby, filthy hands. It's you-germs. Nothing to be afraid of.

Cleanest thread ever !

I pop'em in my mouth for a few seconds after they fall on floor and have been kicked around by everyone's feet trying to knock'em into aposition for someone to grab them easily.

Seriously. I don't clean my dice. I also am willing to follow the 3 second rule if food is dropped. I don't worry about germs and don't care to. I DO USE hand sanitizer after coming out of public restrooms on the other hand. Even I have my limits, however low they may be.

Ew. Ew, ew, ew. Thank you so much for giving me that little neurosis to add to the stack I already had. Blej;klrja;slkejff.

Okay, seriously though, now I'm starting to worry about this. Plastic dice are easy to clean, no problem, but I have one little set carved from bone and amber. How on earth to I clean that?

If your dice build up dirt on grime, then you are not rolling them enough. I have never managed to accumulate any perceptible amount of dirt on mine, and I ma playing two or three times per month. Rotating dice sets so they are used on average once per month or less.

Shadow Lodge

You could go with some water with a bit of vinegar and a couple of drops of tea tree oil.

Sure, you wash your hands, but what about your gaming buddy's table? Or the table at the convention? Or the floor that your dice fell onto? Or the inside of your dice bag (dust, lint, strep, lots of things could get in there). And that's assuming that no one ever borrows your dice, even for one roll. Did you roll on the combat mat, the one that is written on with dry/wet erase and then cleaned off with a dirty rag or the same paper towel all nght? Rolling dice on that and then putting chips into your mouth is basically licking the battlemat, and we've all done it.

Con is not a dump stat, even for gamers. It's how we make our saving throws vs. gross. I'm going to go wash my dice in hydrogen peroxide, now. And disinfect my battlemat.

I radiate mine in the microwave. Cooks away all the germs and has the interesting side-effect of making all my dice roll better.

j/k

Grand Lodge

I'd imagine some mild antibacterial dish soap and water would be all you need for plastic dice, to kill off any germs and clear up any built-up oils and grease.

Now, how would you clean the metal dice from Crystal Caste?

LOL, I love this thread. I've been playing for 30+ years and have never once "washed" my dice. I have, when necessary due to some bizarre circumstance, wiped down a die because it got dirty, but otherwise my dice are unwashed.

I keep them in a plastic divider box and use them three or four times a month.

I doubt if I placed my dice right next to some brand new dice you could tell the difference other than the slight wear on my dice.

Seriously, you're worried about germs on your dice? Do you wipe down the handles on grocery carts? Do you wear rubber gloves when you punch elevator buttons? Do you carry paper seat covers for sitting at a restaurant?

This is hilarious.

I use a glass cleaner sprayed onto a cloth. Just rub each die clean...
But you want to wash them all at once. Better use the dishwasher and whatever mesh container will hold them, either the bag someone mentioned earlier or the silverware tray on mine has a closeable lid for washing small things.

Scarab Sages

My dice usually spend enough time in my mouth to maintain a clean appearance.

Put them in a bowl, pour in a little dishwashing soap (the handwashing kind, not the machine kind), turn water on over them, let soak for an hour stirring occasionally then strain, and pour the dice on a towel to dry.

Only a necessity when they get something on them - spilled soda/food/etc, or when I moved out of my last apartment my roommate had a bunch of his dice left in his room covered by some sticky I-don't-wanna-know-what - but it comes up from time to time and it's a simple solution that works.

I have sweaty hands, so I tend to just run them under water every once in awhile. I usually don't use soap, just a quick rinse.

The horror! My dice are trying to climb out of the box!

Seriously, people, I'm going to have nightmares about dice-eating bacteria. :)

Never even thought about cleaning my dice before just now, and I think I have a new weekly chore...

I gently cup my sack, and then lovingly squeeze it a bit...I make sure the dice don't fall out. I take them into my hand, and I rub and squeeze them, moving them around, feeling them softly move against each other in my palm. Sometimes I use my left hand, for that unique "stranger" feeling. I use a sort of back and forth motion, from the top of my sack down to the bottom of it, then back again, slowly undulating my dice inside my sack. I sometimes bounce them in my hand, or sometimes go back and forth between my right and left hands. I prefer warm water, not hot water, and a good soapy lather.

Essentially I got one of those panty hose bags my wife has, I put them all in there, and run them under the water.

What did you think I was talking about??

Liberty's Edge

I should mention that an old toothbrush is the best tool for cleaning dice. The bristles can easily clear the grime from inside the numbers or dots.

I don't recommend using your current toothbrush though, unless you enjoy living on the edge!

In the 20+ years of gaming, I have never intentionally cleaned my dice.

Whew! Thought i got directed to a hustler forum for a second. :p

the dirt on the dice is part of their history, if you don't honour/mind the history you can buy new ones. At least that's how I see it, no offense to anyone. On the other side I don't have 20+ years of gaming behind me.
