Can an Inquisitor get a familiar or animal companion?

Rules Questions

All,

A friend of mine is planning to make an Inquisitor. However, he is obsessed with the idea of taking a level of Wizard in order to have a familiar, even though he knows it wont scale.

I was just wondering if there is a feat or a trait or something that would let an inquisitor get one. I dont really know anything about inquisitors, so I figured I would ask here.

Thanks!

Yes. Eldrich heritage would work, sadly it also needs Skill focus and 13 in char.

Animal companion can be obtained with the animal domain (or better, the feather subdomain).

Okay. Eldritch Heritage feat, Eagle Domain, Frog Domain, Monkey Domain, Serpent Domain all grant a familiar.
No multiclassing needed.

Wow thanks! The only other thing he liked from Wizard was the ability to (as a universalist) throw his weapon.

Is there a spell that lets an Inquisitor do that?

Thanks for the help!

Grand Lodge

Throw what weapon? There are thrown weapons available.

I think there is a domain that gives the same power but I could be wrong.

Grand Lodge

There is a throwing enchantment.

The magic domain will give you the hand of the acolyte. Skill focus in any knowledge skill then take the arcane bloodline with the eldrich heritage feat. Sounds like an Inquisitor of Nethys to me. You will still have to have a 13 cha to make it work but you can have everything by third lvl.

Thanks, I will point him to that option.

And if it wasnt clear, the Wizard power with throwing, that he hoped to have or emulate, is the Universalist Wizard's power to throw your weapon and have it return.

I personally think he should abandon that and go with the animal or feather domain, and then take that companion boon feat to push the animal companion up to full power.

But I will let him know all his options.

Thanks much!

Inquisitors get Returning Weapon as a 1st level spell... he only has to pick a weapon that he could potentially throw: Spears, Hammers, Axes.

However the throwing range of such weapons suck, so he'll either have to live with the penalties from range increments or enchant the throwing weapon for "distance".

Also returning weapons can't be thrown twice in the same round if you have a high BAB:

So he might want to have gauntlets/spiked gauntlets/cestus to be able to do AoO while his weapon is flying. ;-)

Assuming that this isn't PFS...

There was a third level WotC spell that allowed you to throw your weapon, attacking everyone in a line. It's closed content so I cna't post it here.

Thanks for the responses. I will pass them along!

There are "Animal and Terrain" domains in Ultimate Magic that may also be taken by a non-druid. Four of them give a familiar: Eagle, Frog, Monkey and Serpent.
The Eagle domain also gives a bonus to ranged attacks.

Artifice domain at level 8 gives your weapon dancing.

although all possibilities are all good and well, as a dm you can move heaven and earth. so giving a familiar would be possible too.
if you like you can make him do something (roleplaying wise)to gain it.
i still think that rukes are made to guide the players and GM.
not to force someone to play almost the character he or she envisions. But then... some people like the rules to be explicit. even in a fantasy world ;)
