I loved the idea for Zero no Tsukaima... Although I was disappointed that they din't explore more of the world and instead chose to focus on the usual harem comedy... Which should be expected but it's still a let down. :(

I am not the biggest baseball fan either, but the series was a great take on a League Of Their Own, I would STRONGLY suggest you check it out.
1) These claims seem to get perilously close to saying that media or literary portrayals have no impact at all. That mass media has no effect on shaping culture or individuals. There's a lot of space between that and "violent video games don't turn people into murderers".People are not stupid. Most people might be uncultured, but surprise, surprise... They. are. not. stupid. People can tell fiction from reality, at very least when it's presented in a highly over-the-top fashion like anime often does.
Does media influence people? Of course it does... But 99% of humanity is smart enough to differentiate fiction from reality. My 8-years-old nephew knows that violence is wrong, but he still loves seeing heroes kick the bad guys asses.
And yet, every time someone says something is bad influence on whoever, they never include themselves in the group being influenced, it's always "Well, I'm not affected by it, but all those stupid people are!". Funny how that works...
4)Fanservice (of the kind we're talking about) is sexist. It's an aspect of sexism. It's putting women's bodies on display draw male eyeballs. And money.Sure, you're presenting attractive people to attract more viewers... So what? How the hell is that sexist?
It's seems pretty obvious that a show with a mostly male audience will include stuff that interests most male viewers (and, who knew, that includes attractive females), just like a show with a mostly female audience will include stuff that attract most female viewers (and that includes attractive males).
There is nothing wrong with having attractive characters. Absolutely nothing. You're not discriminating against...
1) I didn't say people were stupid or couldn't distinguish between fiction and reality. I said that fiction and the media influence people. Can you see the difference between those two things?

I'm also amused that I just described one of the differences between anime fanservice and more traditional Western sexism seen in older comics and elsewhere is that the girls in anime are competent developed protagonists, not just subordinant to the male leads. But they still have to flash their panties. That they still have to do the fanservice is the point.

Really that's what bothers most about it. If it was just stupid completely sexist shows where the women were nothing but bimbos or helpless screaming hostages, I could just ignore those shows. Instead the good shows with interesting strong female characters keep interrupted with random irrelevant fanservice. Often it seems forced and completely out of character.

I really want to enjoy Lord Marksman and Vanadis, but the harem elements really detract from it. And DAMN those outfits look cold.
I watched a few episodes of that show (about half, actually... 5 or 6... Maybe 7? Not sure), because it was supposed to be about the protagonists winning battles with wits and good tactics... It isn't. They win battles with giant anime energy attacks... Pretty disappointing. :/

I really didn't like the series for the above listed reasons. To me, it skips deus ex machina and goes straight to gary (^_^)stu/Mary sue levels of wish fulfillment. it's what is also keeping me from enjoying/finishing log horizon.

This is reminding me I need to watch Bodacious Space Pirates at some point. My friends have described it as an amazing hard sci-fi space combat series where the author specifically said that he made it about a crew of high school girls because if it featured normal people it would never sell, and he wanted to make money.
loooooooove bodacious space pirates. Love it. Strongly suggest it for the rather hard Sci fi aspects.
Crying watching the last gundam movie. Always gets me in the feels.

So I finished Ga-Rei-Zero. Pretty good, but is there more to it than just the 12 episodes I watched on Hulu? The way it ended I could see as an ending but the villain just completely walks away from the situation with what amounts to a "I'll be back." statement. Seems like there could be more.

In fiction, EVERYTHING works because the writer says it does. But sine you want a specific example, let's go with the Battle of Molsheim from Episode 3, which I had figured you were specifically talking about when I made my reply.
Zhcted begins by charging 400 of their 900 Cavalry units into Thernardier's larger force. Elen and Titre head this force, using their skills to defend the unit from enemy archers.
Tactic A: Use of special assets (wind shield and sniper) to conserve the momentum of your charge. With Ellen and Tigre taking care of those elements (archers, pikes) that usually blunt charges, the Zhcted forces hit Thernadier's line like a freight train.
After their infantry get stomped, rush in their own cavalry, which engage the Zhcted forces, and follow up with their Earth Dragon. As the dragon attacks, the Thernardian cavalrymen split off and flank the Zhcted force, pinning them against the unstoppable draconic assault.
Tactic B: Hammer & Anvil - lock the enemy in place with one unit, then use another, hard-hitting unit to pound them flat.
Lim leads another 400 cavalry in reserve to hit one of the flanking forces from behind, giving Elen's force some breathing room to fight back, and Elen herself the opportunity to take out the Dragon with Let Admos.
Tactics C: As far as tactics go, a flank charge from reserve forces is pretty textbook, yes, but it's simple and effective, which is why it's in the textbook in the first place.
And here we have the first "Anime Energy Attack", used to neutralize the Dragon. I guess you could call it extraordinary and overpowered, but then, so was the Dragon.
Thernadier splits off a flying column of 400 troops to flank the reforming lines. Lim falls back with her forces, goading the flying column to pursue, where they fall for a rope trap set before. With the enemy charge stopped in it's tracks, Lim's force turns around and runs them over, possibly literally.
Titre then signals the last of the Zhcted cavalry to appear at the enemy's rear, with the setting sun at their backs. The sun keeps the enemy from realizing that this force of only about a hundred men is using the army's spare horses to make the formation look twenty times it's actual size. Thernadier loses his nerve and calls for a retreat. Zhcted forces pursue and rout them. At this point, the battle is effectively over.
Tactics D: Deception and Psychological Warfare are important tools of any good strategist. Here, they go a step farther and even set an actual trap. Between the crushing of the infantry, the destruction of his first dragon, and wiping out the flying column, the enemy commander, admittedly a bit of a cowardly braggart as it was, is afraid to commit to further action, especially with what he thinks is an even larger force at his back.
The Zhcted forces make it all the way to Zion Thernadier himself. He tries to salvage the situation by challenging Tigre to a duel, but loses. As his remaining men rush to protect him, he tries to escape on his other Dragon, but Tigre shoots him down with the second Anime Energy Attack of the day. The End.

You know my thoughts regarding the format wars. That said, prepare your calendars folks- the voice of Kinos companion dubbed was quite good. Raspy and sarcastic, excellent for dialogues.

It's only clever tactics if you show how they work and why they work. Showing chess pieces making generic movements and saying it worked is not clever, it's lazy writing and boring visuals.
How did they succeed? How does the plan work so flawlessly? Did the enemy just stand still doing nothing why the protagonists perfectly positioned themselves? Don't enemies ever learn, adapt and counter-attack?
The author never shows us how or why tactics work. He shows a bunch of chess pieces and has the narrator say it did work... At best, the narrator explains why those tactics should work in theory, then cut to a scene where they worked perfectly...
And yes, lack of action scenes is also an issue. Anime is a visual media. I'm not reading a book, I expect the show to actually SHOW me something... And if its an anime that is supposedly about using tactics, don't just give every hero super-anime-power that outclass all enemies.

Almost finished with my annual rewatching of Angel Beats. I think its a contender for my all-time favorite anime.
Actually intrigued by The Heroic Legend of Arslan... The OVAs were plagued by budget concerns so that the story never finished playing out, so I'm hoping we'll get that with the series.

Yamada and the 7 witches will be worth watching, manga is a great series and really fun. (lot of kissing though. Boys kissing girls, girls kissing boys, girls kissing girls, boys kissing boys, everyone gets kissed)

Halfway through Gundam Wing right now, my wife is showing it to me, as it was one of the favorite animes of her youth.
Still haven't decided if Heero Yuy is one bad ass kid or just a high functioning psychopath, though the one that really concerns me is Relena Darlian who seems to have great affection for him despite his threatening to kill her not only the first time they meet but several times after for awhile.
Lessions I Learned From Anime: Step 1. If the prettiest girl in school hands you an invitation to her birthday party, humiliate her in front of her friends by tearing the invitation to shreds then throwing it on the ground. Wipe away her tears as she starts crying but before she thinks maybe you're not actually a monster as you walk away issue a death threat under your breath, soft enough that her friends can't hear but loud enough so that she knows for sure you want her dead.
