Popularity is the American Idol portion of RPG Superstar. They want to find someone that can resonate with the community. The person may become a closer part of the Paizo family and they may not want a person that is generally unliked or just a meanie. I think anonymity may lead to a better subjective community review of the submission, but personality can sell goods.

Quite true. How we performed in previous rounds and how we conduct ourselves on the forums have a BIG impact on future rounds. For instance, I suspect Eric will get a lot of votes from people who are curious to see what he will do in the monster round, because of his previous work with home-made monsters on the forums.

Likewise, a lot of people will vote for the creator of the item they liked best, even if their round 2 submission might not be stellar.

On a second note, I just reread my organization, and I feel relieved that it's actually pretty interesting (but really lore-heavy. It might be Greek to people not familiar with the setting. :/). I was in such a state when I submitted it that I wasn't sure until now.

One of the things I really struggled with in this round was how much to demonstrate knowledge of the setting vs. going for more mojo. I had one that was very intrinsically connected to Golarion and one that I thought just had a little more "kewl" factor and I was trying to figure out what judges and voters would most respond to.

I certainly hope that's true, but I'm not taking anything for granted.

When it came time to design my organization, I said, "What if most voters don't know that I've been doing a lot of monster design work here on the boards? How do I convince them to send me to Round 3?" Answer: design a Golarion organization so kick-ass, it wins votes on its own merits.

(Did I succeed in doing that? Only time will tell.)

I will, of course, be grateful for every voter who picks me because they want to see what I can do in the monster round, and I'll try to live up to the hype. But I'll also do my best to win over voters who've never heard of me by designing stuff that's as awesome as my skills as a designer can make it.

Thanks for the kind words I hope to live up to every one of them, cause your going to be serious competition in the next two rounds.

I'm gonna skip invoking the Blue Ones, as being called Smurphy is a family burden I bear.

GM v player? I like both a lot, though outside of Society play, I haven't run in years. However, my group is running Kingmaker now, then we're taking turns in the GM chair, doing Serpent's Skull, Carrion Crown, then I get to run Jade Regent. We estimate I will be GM in less than three years. When I read that, it sounds like a long time. But three years of gaming is a lovely fate to contemplate.

EDIT: I still got blue-faced!

That would have worked for a round, unfortunately she had him for 5 days. It was over an hour at the table before someone finally remembered that the rogue had a wand of break enchantment, I didn't even knew we had.

It was quite a bit of fun anyway the other player and I kept bickering ICly.

Anyone have a good suggestion for checking if a monster idea has been done before? (Google turned up nothing, which is good I guess)

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 , Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9

I know what you mean, Steve! By the nine hells, I HOPE beyond hope that my organization is original! I know Pathfinder has only been out for five years now, but Paizo has produced a LOT! I'm not complaining. I own most of it and have read about half of it. It's hard to keep track of what's already out there!

Sorry I haven't posted here in the Guildhall for a while. Life is just busy. Family, work, church. Crazy! I had a lot to catch up on! :) You guys all rock, by the way! I'm glad to know ya! Hopefully tomorrow I'll finally get to read the other half of the Round 1 entries.

I'm relieved to have Round 2 submitted and hope it goes over well with the voting public, lol. It's got to be better received than my magic item was! I don't think it helped that I was first alphabetically. Although if I write something better (which I hope I did)...

Time to begin my monster research. Admittedly, I think this might be a hard round for me. I think I'm better at fluff than crunch. But you know, where there's a will, there's a way. And I'm not going to psych myself out. I'll take a good idea largely realized and well-written any day! Let's just hope the muses keep the inspiration flowing. I KNOW I'll keep the Dr. Pepper flowing!

Oh, and as far as I can remember, I'm a smurf virgin...

EDIT Oops! Not anymore! :) Speaking of Smurf virgins, have you noticed how many boy smurfs there are? Smurfette's virtue may have been compromised. Just sayin'!

Grand Lodge Contributor , Dedicated Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9

Oh and by the way, thank you very much for the reviews, Mark and Eric! I appreciate both the praise and constructive criticism! :)

I wish it was already Tuesday. After Thursday when I submitted, I had not even looked at it, but today I read it again, and I'm proud to say I still am very happy with what I submitted! I just hope that other people like it too... :)

Liberty's Edge Contributor, RPG Superstar 2012 , Star Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 9

I wanted to get all 32 items done last night, but once it hit midnight, I realized I was going to be gibbering in post form. I got the remaining 4 this morning. Yay! I focused on what made the item stand out for me as cool--nothing terribly insightful, just a reaction upon reading through.

I've managed to come up with at least 5 different reasons why my organization stinks. The extra time makes it easy, but I am a worrier by nature. :)

Good luck to all of you with your organizations!

I'm interested in hearing more about this, Jacob. I'm a Cancer Survivor myself. Last year at this time, I was in the final stages of chemotherapy treatment for Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma. During my sickness, I set up a blog where I told my story and encouraged people to sign up as blood and bone marrow donors.

Jacob T., that's great that you beat cancer. I'd love to see your blog (assuming it's in English...).

I've been raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society since 2007, when I first got involved after getting a pamphlet in the mail. Since then, I've raised about $12,500 and plan to push that total to above $15,000 (plus I was the fundraising mentor for several teams, including one that raised about $100,000).

I hike in memory of a college friend, a sportswriter named Casey Kane, who died in 2004; and in honor of one of my closest friends, Kris, who just celebrated being cancer-free for two and a half years after a bout with Hodgkin's disease. Kris is one of the guys I game with and one of my beta readers for everything you're seeing from me in the contest.

You can find more information on my fundraising page. (I hope it's OK that I posted that; if not, please feel free to delete it someone.)

Rather than review items or work on the later rounds, I have been working on both my campaigns and random jotting ideas. The judges covered more than I think I would have noticed. And why worry too much about the later rounds due to surprises?

Question:
How often did the Judges have to revert to the rulebooks to be able to assess items? Quite a bit I would hazard to guess, but probably only for the keep pile.

Maaan I'm so doubtful. Did I pick an area of the map that has been covered too much already? Should I have picked a peripheral area like Azlant, Crown of the World, or southern Garund, where there's less content explored and more freedom to make up fun stuff?
.
.
Should I have picked one of my more wild ideas? Some of the ideas I didn't pursue were:

  • Some sort of Goblin organization (can't go wrong! :p)
  • A group of weapon masters, each hailing from a different area and specializing in a different weapon, wandering the globe in search of a challenge, replacing members with whomever bests them in combat (so you can have anime-esque one-on-one tournament style fights? I dunno. :p)
  • Or, haha, a combination of the two above ideas!

But every time I read my idea, I start to really like it again... it strikes me as something that should exist but doesn't... (or what if it DOES exist and I missed it!? Worry worry worry...)

I suppose I'm concerned that while my concept is pretty solid and useful, it's not all that flashy. Well, we'll see how it resonates with the public. Must build up messageboard reputation as a cool dude to make up lost ground! XD
