Replies to Further Questions:

1. Why would character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?

Why wouldn't I? The world is vast! It is immense, it is more than mountains and cities and towns! If I am to be honest, I do not think I would enjoy life were I to stay prone for years in one place. There is this sense of... wanderlust that oft leaves me wanting the days I travelled ...

2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?

I'm running one. It'll start tomorrow. The biggest reason I'm applying, though, is that JR intrigues me - and you do too as a DM. I really wish I could play for once. The sensation of being a player, to me, is very different from being a DM.

1. Garand is seeking a connection similar to that of a family or tribe, one that he did not feel with his own people, and coming from a nomadic tribe of Shoanti, does not associate 'home' with a place, but with a group of people.

2. Nope. I am in a fair number of other PBP games, so I will understand if someone who is not so fortunate may rate a bit higher in the selection process.

1:Mostly because this place is so dull... it's why I went travelling in the first place, but so far I've been a little worried about leaving Varisia alone. Did you know there are places where undead are given the same rights as people? Crazy... Where was I? Right! With my friends, I could leave and still keep a piece of home with me.

2:Not in a game, been trying to get into a lot of them. And God do I agree with what Patcher said. I'm sick of DMing all the time.

1. Why would your character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?

"As Sinashakte teaches 'May the light carry you far today'. My home is wherever my feet may take me, and there is much within this world I have yet to discover. A journey across the spine of the world would be one worthy of remembrance"

2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?

Nope

The Questions
1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local? Having recently finished studying religion in temples, libraries and monasteries throughout the Inner Sea, Kallista has decided to return to Sandpoint to check in on her old friend Ameiko, who she hasn't seen in almost a decade.
2. Which NPC are you connected to? Ameiko. They were good friends in their early teens. (Or what passes for an early teen for a gnome)
3. How would you describe your personality? Bright and a bit bubbly. Somewhat obsessed with learning about new religions and cultures based on the worship of gods. Friendly, somewhat impish in her humor and rather free-spirited. She doesn't always follow the rules, but has a very big heart in her tiny body.
4. What will your character contribute to the group? Primary Healer. Some ranged damage, mainly fire-based and battlefield buffing/de-buffing. A bit lacking in raw melee damage, but can hold her own if she must. Will probably summon azatas, celestials and fire elementals if the game progresses to later levels for added frontline and ranged support.
5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her? Full Cleric, not looking into any archtypes, stacking, prestige classes or multi-classing at the moment, but might look into something further down the line to enhance her fiery nature and/or help with skills. (a few bard levels maybe, but likely not)
6. What is your day job? Scholar and itinerant priest of Sarenrae. You mean in character, right?

1a. Are you in another Jade Regent PbP? Nope. I am currently in only one other PbP, which would be DM Patcher's Serpent Skull, as Kythas.
2a. Why would you leave Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the World? To learn about strange new religions, Kallista would travel across the shifting realms of the infinite Abyss and explore the tortuous depths of the Nine Hells... well, maybe not NOW... but she's really looking to encounter new faiths and people to fulfill her gnomish OCD and if it means she gets to travel with her old friend Ameiko, then all the better!

Just For Fun:
"Did I ever tell you about the time I went sailing?" the eager gnome queried her unimpressed-looking listener as she cut into the flaky crust of a rather over-stuffed cream puff. "Horrible experience let me tell you. We gnomes mustn't be made for seafaring. Spent the majority of the trip sick, I did. Yup-yup. Good ship though, and an interesting group of passengers. There was this fat human holy man. Not a cleric like me, mind you, but what some folks call an Oracle. Decent chap, a bit on the portly side, Chellaxian I think. OH! and the captain had this slave girl that I think was really into some weird stuff. Liked to be whipped and what have you. Good singing voice though... There was an elf that boarded just before I got off, one of those wild ones from the Mwangi Expanse that cover themselves with tattoos and dance naked in the jungle to bestial totems and forgotten gods... Should've stayed on a bit longer, he seemed like he'd have been entertaining conversation... Kinda cute too... Ah well..." The bright-eyed gnome sighed in apparent dismay at the opportunity lost and shoveled a massive chunk of the pastry into her mouth. Continuing the verbal assault on her bored companion, despite the mouthful, she rambled on. "I guess it was a good thing I did get off when I did though, I heard later that the ship never reached port in Sargava, Nope-nope... What was the name of that boat... hmmm... Ah yes!... The Jenivere!"

Additional Questions:

1. Fu'lao is intent upon following his masters wishes and gaining experience within the world. This would seem like the perfect opportunity. In addition it would be a great time to possibly repay his life debt to Shalelu.

2. No I am not in any other Jade Regent game.

Nik'o is ready, except for equipment and a trait (I'm thinking something having to do with Bluff). You'll find answers to your questions (with the additional two) in the Q&A section of his profile.

I'll be lurking if you have further questions.

If it's not too late, I'd like to throw my hat in the ring, but with a small note: I'm new to PbP, if you prefer non-noobies to your game that's completely reasonable as initiating people to it can be difficult I'm certain.

That said, here's my offering:

Backstory:

Nami was born in the ghettos of a Tian(I havent been able to find much info on the continent unfortunately) city of great wealth. His father made a meager living as the servant of a minor merchant lord taking him far from home for long spans of time, while his mother was a cook in a local tavern, and often Nami's daily meal consisted of scraps from the tavern's tables.

Nami's father, Nimoto, came home one day with great news, his lord was traveling far away and would return with great wealth. Nimoto never returned. Life became much harder with one parent missing and no source of additional income. Nami took to scavenging for his food, stealing and bullying where he had to, his fists became hard, he learned to use his size to his advantage against larger foes, and he became fearless.

After years of living on the cusp of death, Nami came upon an old man set upon by a gang of street thugs demanding the man's large heavy purse. The old man refused and things quickly turned ugly. Nami rushed to help, but the fight was over before it began, the thugs lying in heaps on the ground. Once the gang had fled, the old man continued on his way, but had to stop to look down at Nami kneeling in his path.

"Why do you kneel, child?" The old man asked.
"I wish to learn your ways, master. To be strong and fierce," Nami said.
"Then answer me this, of all types of victory, what is best?" The master asked.

Nami puzzled over this for many minutes and the master continued on his way down the city streets. Nami followed, watching the cobblestones pass beneath his feet as he pondered the question.

Seeing that the young man was intent upon the question, the master turned to him and said, "When you come to an answer, seek me in the temple on the hill."

Nami did not sleep that night, nor the next, nor any night that week. The question burned in him. Finally, exhausted from lack of sleep, he fell into his mat of straw and dreamed of his mother. How he sometimes fought and railed against her, but she always won in the end with a laugh and caring smile. He awoke with his answer and ran to the temple gates.

The master practiced in the training yard and saw the quickly approaching young halfling.

"Do you have an answer for me, child?"
"I do, the best victory is one without fighting, to overcome your enemy with understanding," Nami said.
"This is the answer I sought. Come inside and learn to be a man." The monk opened the gate and invited him inside.
Nami asked "If that is what you teach, then why train to fight?"
"We train to harmonize with the universe, to understand and overcome, push is met with pull. I am Sensei Okara, come, train, and you will understand."
Nami strode through the gates, eager to learn.

Nami trained with Okara for long years learning many things other than fighting. Then the call came from Okara that a group, lead by Nami would be sent across mountains and glaciers to establish a new temple in Sandpoint where a friend of the temple (Ameiko) resided.

After trials and tribulations by the bucketfull, Nami found himself in Sandpoint, alone and empty-handed.

Questions:

Wasn't sure if you wanted these in character
1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?
To setup a temple and establish trade between that temple and the one in Tian. Visiting

2. Which NPC are you connected to?
Both Ameiko (by story) and Shalelu by simple admiration of her beauty and exotic charm.

3. How would you describe your personality?
Young, impressionable, strong and out to make a difference in the world influenced by a monastic code.

4. What will your character contribute to the group?
I can contribute survival skills, stealth, speed, mobility, keen senses, raw damage, battlefield control maneuvers and also general wisdom.

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?
I will be taking him most likely into to both panther and snapping turtle styles while getting combat reflexes, dodge and mobility for battlefield maneuverability.

6. What is your day job?
I'm a monk, I do a bit of everything, washing, building, cleaning, cooking, training, training, training, gardening, bookkeeping, etc. Hard work is a way of life.
Additional Questions:
1. Why would character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?
To return to my temple home and report either success or failure to Sensei Okara.

2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?
No.

Look forward to some good times. :)

1. Why would your character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?
Harold is quite happy in Sandpoint - he has settled into a routine that he is comfortable with. However, he would follow Ameiko on a trip right around Golarion if she asked him to, and he would do anything in his power to keep his adoptive mother Koya safe is she got it into her head to travel...

2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?
I am neither running, nor participating in, another JR camapign.

1. Why would character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?

"I've lived my whole life in this area. I'm ready to see the world outside of it. I am afraid that if I don't do it soon, My life will slip by before I get a chance."

2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?
As I said, I am in another JR PbP game. I'm trying to get into as many PbP games as i can right now. I'm relatively new to Pathfinder, but am the designated GM in my homegame, so I'd like to get as much playing in as I can before I have to GM the game at home and then really know all the twists :). I'm not running JR now, though.

1. Why would character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?
A: A Ranger's life is in constant motion, seeking out the unknown. And... I would follow Shalelu anywhere; even to Hell.

2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?
A: No.

Liberty's Edge

1. Why would character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?

My character would consider leaving Sandpoint because she has begun to feel uncomfortable again as her strange "transformation" becomes more pronounced. She feels people staring at her each time she comes into town and if she is really honest with herself she has never been happy with village life. It is too different from what she is used to.

2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?

No I am not.

Oh my, another GMT game. He's an awesome GM, everyone that gets in should be lucky to have him :)

Now that the obligatory sucking up is done, I see you have alot of applicants already, so since I'm already in one of your games, I'm not sure I even have a realistic chance to get into this, even though I would love to.

I think I'd give the Ninja a chance, human most likely - you said racial diversity, but so far you almost have only non-humans.

I admit I've not read the player's guide yet, so I can't actually answer your questions just yet. But I will if I know that me being in your other game won't negatively impact my chances.

1. Why would character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?
Ental has not decided that Sandpoint is his permanent home, and would like to see more of the world.

2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?
No.

1. Why would character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?

"Although Sandpoint has been my home for some years, as a varisian I yearn to see other places. I've just started actually living my life, and there's plenty to see and do."

2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?

I entered into one, but it got dismantled on the "Hi my name's XXX, what's yours?". This character was created speciffically for this game, though (in the other I played a human samurai).

I know that feeling Patcher, I have been DM 95% of the time for the last 5 years, and Have not run or played in a single AP.

And GM_Todd
Mai Sagara is almost done, just a bit of extra background data and double checking the math.

Liberty's Edge

And here is Garand's profile.

I added stuff about appearance and threw together some stat blocks for the summoned critters he'd be using.

Due to his shamanic / totemic training, he regards the animals that he calls with summon nature's ally as agents of the spirits, and refers to giant centipedes as 'hunger spirits' and fire beetles as 'cinder spirits,' etc.

Suyu Iwokichi - female human (Tian) Ninja

Grammar: I apologize for any grammar errors already. I'm aware there are some oddly constructed sentences, that's just how Suyu talks. Also she might be slightly drunk when having this conversation. :)

1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?
"I'm a local. My father came to this land a long time ago from Tian Xia, as part of a trade caravan. He had been gravely wounded and so he stayed behind to cure that injury. In the following months he had become quite fond of the local woman that was tending to his wounds, and him, and so he decided to remain here even after he was completely healed again. And how those things go, a short time later they married. A few years later I was born, but unfortunately my mother died in childbirth, so my father was left with raising me on his own. Some of his methods were unusual for this region of course, but I think overall he did a great job. Sometimes he talks of Tian Xia, but I'm never really sure if he misses it or if he's glad if he never sees it again."

2. Which NPC are you connected to?
Ameiko.
"Since we were kids, the two of us got along just great, even though she's a couple of years older. I think it's because we both got Tian blood in us, maybe. Made us not feel like complete freaks, me at least. And I probably shouldn't tell you this, but ever since I got older, I got thouse thoughts about her, you know? - Why am I telling you all this? Are you sure this is really just water?"
Childhood Crush trait (or Best Friend, if you prefer to skip the romance parts). I haven't completely decided on an Age for Suyu yet, since it depends a bit on Ameiko's age as well.

3. How would you describe your personality?
"Ah well, I guess you best ask someone else if you want an honest opinion, but alright, since you're asking me, I'll tell you. I'm a really easygoing girl, smart, witty and overall fun to be with. Everyone just loves me and wants to be my friend. Oh, and I know 17 ways to break every bone in your arm without getting out of this chair if you don't take your hand of my leg right now"

4. What will your character contribute to the group?
"My father trained me in the ancient art of the Ninja since I was little. That's what he was, before he came here. Never seen one, you say? Yeah, that's us. If you want someone to spy on your enemy, or make sure they wake up with a dagger between their ribs, we're the best. Also he told me alot about his home, the continent of Tian Xia, so if we ever go there, or meet people from there, I probably can tell you something about them too."
sneakyness, sneak attacks, poison, maybe trapfinding (see question 5 too) and a couple of other usual ninja/rogue things.

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?
So far I'm planning on taking mostly Ninja levels. I may pick up a level or two of rogue as well, if we need a magic trap disabler. I might take some face-skills, but I have other priorities, but I can perhaps spare a skillpoint or two a level to go into these.
Edit: Just found out I apperently can't multiclass between Ninja and rogue, since ninja is a rogue alternate class. So instead I might pick up the Trapper Ranger archetype, as that gives me trapfinding as well - also better for my BAB. Maybe the 2nd level for TWF feats.

6. What is your day job?
"I'm currently a waitress at Ameiko's tavern, the Rusty Dragon. It's the best tavern in Sandpoint, you really should go there."

Additional Questions:
1. Why would character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?

"It's getting a bit boring in Sandpoint. Ameiko has been of on an adventure herself a few years ago, did you know that? Well, she doesn't like talking about it, but I'm sure it was exciting. And now she's considering doing it again, and if I could go with her, that would be awesome. Oh and also my father has told me about his travels, and maybe one day I want to actually visit Tian Xia to see if it's really like in his stories."

2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?
No. Neither am I GMing one, participate in a JR P&P game or have the books/pdfs. :)

The Questions II because I missed the sneaky "in character" line at the end and was wondering why everyone was posting like this... =D
...overheard at the Rusty Dragon...

1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?
"It has been over a decade since I was last here, can you believe that? I don't recognize hardly anyone here. Except the elf, but she never changes, just scowls more. Yup she does. I used to hang around a lot with Ameiko when she was a wee thing. What do you mean? Haha! Good one, short jokes, I never hear those! Anyway, I heard she was thinking of selling the place and hitting the road, now what kind of best friend would I be to let her go off exploring alone? Hmmmm?"

2. Which NPC are you connected to?
"Ameiko and I were inseparable when she was a lass, we were. Like two peas in a pod they say! Yup yup! I missed her so much when I went abroad to study unusual and ancient religions. Next thing I know its over ten years and I decide to come see my friend and tell her some of the interesting things I've learned. Hanspur you say? Why yes, funny story actually. This one time, in the Stolen Lands, a dwarf cle... whats that? Yup I know right! but yup it was a dwarf cleric of the Drowned God, and whatdya know, sure as I'm sitting here eating this creme puff, the rat tried to..."

3. How would you describe your personality?
"Obsessed, thats what simpler humans like to call folks that have any desire to learn something more than how to kill, breed and farm. Compulsive too. Yup, I get it all the time I do. "There's that Kallista with her face in a tome looking for answers!" they all say! Of course all you tall races seem to think we littler people are just cute as buttons. Oh, and thieves. Never could figure that one out. I'm a good girl though! Once you get to know me I come out of my shell too, I'm usually way more talkative than this..."

4. What will your character contribute to the group?
"Haha! I know you're teasing me now! Nope nope, I'm not long for a stand-up toe to toe fight, I like to stick to the back and let my faith in the Dawnflower keep my friends free from harm. With a quick prayer and a little faith, I can mend a mortal blow or strengthen the resolve and armor of my allies. I'm pretty good at talking to... Wow! You're just a laugh a minute today! But yup, I've been all around the Inner Sea, from Port Peril to Chelliax and I've learned a lot about how to deal with people. Yup I have!"

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?
"Surely you jest! The calling is my life and hearts blood. I take my service to Sarenrae above all else, even my studies pale next to the warmth she inspires within me. I have no desire to be a warrior or wizard or sneak. An entertainer? Awww... You insult me one minute, then flatter me the next. I suppose given the proper motivation I could practice my singing voice... Really? OK, listen to this short ballad to Iomedae that a Paladin from Brevoy taught me once. Huh? no, I think he got mauled by a bear."

6. What is your day job?
"What do you mean a priest and scholar isn't a job? A good one that! I suppose peasant isn't really a job either if you want to get technical about it as my Granddaddy used to say. Yup yup. He was an inventor you know? You ever hear of the term hydrodynamics? I thought not! Although I have done some scribe work from time to time, but that was when I was young and needed the money..."

1a. Are you in another Jade Regent PbP?
Nope. I am currently in only one other PbP, which would be DM Patcher's Serpent Skull, as Kythas.

2a. Why would you leave Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the World?
"Oh my! Why would you need to ask?! You know my best friend is going right? And if that wasn't enough, just imagine all the strange and wondrous religions and customs the peoples of those faraway lands must practice! Either of those is reason enough for this young gal to set back to the trail! It is, it is! Well sir, it has been most pleasant entertaining your company, but I fear must be getting on to see my friend before I start to talk to much. Yup. Good night to you."

Ok, everyone. Last call. If you want in, now's your chance. If you've previously dotted for interested or only answered the first set of question, you better get the app in soon. I'm putting an end to applications at 1:00 p.m. today.

Thanks everyone. We have a great group here!

Kallista:

Hey there. Can you email me, please. thetoddblog@gmail.com

Thanks!

I am finished to the point of usability (missing visual descriptions of other personas)

The Questions
1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?
I am a local resident and have lived here all my life

2. Which NPC are you connected to (I am assuming story wise, * marks trait selection)?
I am a Half-sister of Shalelu* and look up to her, and she has taught me how to survive in the forest if need be. I also know Ameiko as a childhood friend.

3. How would you describe your personality?
That depends on the persona I use when disguised.
But as myself (the base persona), I am protective of my family and friends, Kind, polite**, observant, and love challenges.

As the Pai (Martial artist) persona, I am more tomboyish and reckless, and even more honorable when I fight***, I sometimes even swear, but have a dislike of the prefix honorific when being addressed.

As the Twin Tails (Thief) persona, I am more cautious, plan things out more, and show a dislike for women with average and above average busts (even though she has above average, the bandages make it look below average)

4. What will your character contribute to the group?
Skills in scouting, talking, and information. Supporting comrade combatants by flanking targets, and weakening targets with modified sneak attacks.

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?
My design is for the most part laid out all the way to 20th level.
I will dip into Monk(Martial artist) for either 2 or 4 levels, but the rest is all Ninja. The gaps are to allow for flexibility as needed.

6. What is your day job?
I work as a barmaid in the Rusty Dragon and I make cloths on the side as a seamstress. The barmaid job is so I can watch over Ameiko as part of the Yuki Ryu clan's orders.

**(Using Japanese honorifics when speaking in Tein, I read enough manga)
***restricts her ninja tricks

****Second batch of questions****

1b. Why would character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?
I have orders that, if Ameiko moves out of Sandpoint I am to follow and protect her.

2b. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?
Nope, first AP Azure_Zero so far have ever entered for.

****GM questions****

A question for our generous GM
Do you consider Unarmed Strike a Natural Weapon?
(refer to weapon grouping in UC page 45)
If so, does it qualify for the Eldritch Claws feat(APG, page 158)

and in my profile will be a "DM eyes only" spoiler tags, revealing some secrets. (this will be up later today)

Azure: I might be willing to consider that. It seems like it makes sense mechanically. But I'm worried that it might be kind of overpowered - and awesome.

Good luck everyone! I'm having a great time being a player in his Serpent's Skull game. He's a great GM.

Another question for our generous DM: Can I use a trait (or even two) to get the benefit of the Veiled Vileness feat? (maybe not the bonuses to skills and saves, just the aesthetical effect)

Nik'o has his three traits. He's only missing equipment.

Good luck to all!

I know my sheets are mostly WIP, though I'll fix that in the unlikely event I get picked. Good luck to everyone.

Replies to Further Questions
1. Why would character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?
Harun wants to see what adventures he can have. He is hoping that it will somehow make Ameiko open up to him and tell him of her adventures and why she retired.
2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?
Nope

All right. Recruitment is closed. I am making my final decisions and will have the list posted here shortly.

Good work everyone. You've, once again, made my job both easy and difficult. I know that I can't go wrong with anyone I select, but I'm going to be hard-pressed to narrow it down to four (or five or six).

Mark Sweetman:

Hey there. Can you email me, please. thetoddblog@gmail.com

Thanks!

Thanks for the consideration, GM_Todd. If I don't get in this game, I hope to get in your next :).

GM_Todd
I found your "GMT's Jade Regent OOC Discussion" thread, but can not access it.
Can you please provide a link into the thread.

Edit: Nevermind, The forum link finally worked.

It is with great joy I announce my selections for the Jade Regent PbP game. As already stated, the decision was a difficult one to make, as there were many tremendous applicants. But, as the game would be unwieldy with 19 players, I have narrowed it down to five.

If you weren't selected, take comfort in knowing that there will be countless other PbPs popping up for this AP in the coming days and weeks, and you have some incredibly strong characters ready to roll for those recruitment threads. Also, if there are any GMs in here looking to run the Jade Regent AP, skip the recruitment-thread process and select from the fine players who applied here.

The Five:
Nami Chiisai
Mark Sweetman
Kallista Firebloom
Dreaming Warforged / Nik'o
Patcher

For those selected, head on over to the OOC Thread and finish up your character sheets.

Again, thanks to all who applied.

Well I'd be lying if I'd say now I'm not sad I didn't get in, but it wasn't completely unexpected.

GMT is an awesome GM, congrats to everyone who made it into the game!

Well at least I got a character concept now for another game.

Well, I tried, and according to the math, had a slim chance

Best wishes to the winners

**through I like DEWN MOU'TAIN's idea of breaking down the entries into groups for "The World's Largest Dungeon." so those 13 that applied still got to play. The groups are not perfect, but still usable.

*pouts* I take back my previously stated sucking up...jk GMT I still love you!

Dark Archive

Congrats to those who made it! Good gaming!

I'm curious to see how this plays out. I was at GenCon for the entire recruitment here or I would have definitely applied.

Interestingly, there don't seem to be as many recruitment threads for JR as normally pop up when a new AP is released; I wonder if it's because of the theme or if the people willing to GM are already busy doing so.

Ah, that makes sense. And matches up pretty well with the luck I tend to have regarding such things.
