Dwarf Monk

Advice

Some friends of mine are starting a new campaign and I intend to play a dwarf monk. Yes we still roll and the rolling system the GM uses usually ends up with higher stats, I rolled fairly well.

Str 16
Con 17 (18 at 4th) (Racial's already figured in)
Dex 16
Wis 18
Int 14
Cha 10

I intend to put the fourth level stat point in Con (cause I can't stand looking at that odd number).

We are starting our characters at fourth level.

Thing is now I am just stuck. Feat wise this is what I got:

1)?
monk bonus) Dodge
monk bonus) Improved Grapple
3) Power Attack

I was thinking Deadly Aim (Gm has rulled that since we are starting at first level, it will be fine even though I don't qualify for it at 1st level)

Was also thinking of taking the Sacred Mountian archtype. Any thoughts and insight would be greatly appreciated. The campaign will most likely go up into the higher teens and maybe to 20 but not sure.

What I know of the rest of the party consists of a Duel Wield Rogue, Ranger (all I know about him), an Oracle of Battle, Magus, Wizard (no idea on speciality, but I know the guy and think he will try to make a blaster), and I believe an Anti-Paladin (not looking forward to that)

Thanks for any help.

go zen archer.

dwarf monks can be a better ranged character than an elven ranger. Put them to shame.

+1 to that. And starting at level 4 means you start after the switch to WIS as your archery stat. So no growing pains.

If you stick with the Sacred Mountain archetype, you could always go with Toughness for that feat. With your already high con, favored class bonuses going to hp, and toughness, you could have an insane amount of hp's.

Welcome to being one tough nut to crack.

Are you rolling the game up immediately? I'm hearing that the Ultimate Combat book has lots of excellent options for a monk. :)

We just started a new PF campaign (up to now we had been playing 3.5) and I picked a Dwarf Monk as well-starting at 2nd lvl. I picked Combat Reflexes, Dodge and Deflect Arrows as my first three feats-but only because the GM said that it was a campaign where we fought a LOT of Kobolds.
PF is great-combat moves so much faster now.

Liberty's Edge

If you play a Monk of the Sacred Mountain, you automatically get Toughness (in addition to a bonus feat) at 2nd level. You don't need to take it explicitly.

Really thinking about Zen Archer, but role-play wise it isn't as good a fit (though not discounting it yet).

If I don't go Sacred Mountain I am pretty sure I will take Toughness, was kinda thinking of taking the feat from APG that gives +1 Nat Armor. Gives me a fairly decent AC. After reading Treantmonk's guide I think it would help especially since I will be standing in one spot more.

We won't be starting the game for a month or so (what is the release date on Ultimate Combat?)

What about advancement? Anything in particular I should be looking at as I level up?

Is Deadly Aim worth it for the Shurkien?

Have to say I am pretty excited about the character.

deadly aim is the only real way to make shurikens worthwhile. Well that and poison.

A volley of deadly aimed shurikens with poison on them is rude.

Go with the Zen Archer, I'm playing a 4th lvl Dwarf Zen Archer and he is just sick!!!

At 4th my feats are Perfect Strike, Point Blank Shot, Deadly Aim, Precise Shot, Weapon Focus (Comp LB), Point Blank Master, and Improved Grapple.

Not really sure why I took the last one, (I'm kind of hoping that the GM will let me replace it when we recieve Ultimate combat.)

Str-16,Dex-14,Con-14,Int-9,Wis-18,Cha-5 20pt buy

Yea, not your typical dwarf fighting with a composite longbow, but very effective.

If I would play a Dwarven Monk, my first level feat would be Steel Soul. You won't be stopped by magic. Ever.

Steel Soul? Is that in Ultimate Combat?

You are especially resistant to magic.

Prerequisites: Dwarf, hardy racial trait.

Benefit: You receive a +4 racial bonus on saving throws against spells and spell-like abilities. This replaces the normal bonus from the dwarf's hardy racial trait.

Normal: Dwarves normally receive a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against spells and spell-like abilities.

Thanks, missed that.

You're welcome.

I really like this feat. It basically Iron Willl, Lightning Reflexes and Great Fortutude all in one. Ok, it works "only" for maybe 50% of all saves, but 50% of 3 feats is still one and a half feat.

Combined with the high saves of the Monk and decent Dex, Con and Wis scores, your can have VERY good saves without even trying.

Ya I really liked that feat as well, and had pretty well forgotten about it.

I talked to the GM and we have worked out story wise why he would be a Zen Archer and as there is no other archer in the party he is on board with it!

So How does this look:

1) Steel Soul
MB1) Perfect Strike
MB1) Point Blank Shot
MB2) Presice Shot
MB2) WF Composite Long Bow
3) Deadly Aim
MB3) Point Blank Master

Is there any reason to take Rapid Shot or Manyshot with a Zen Archer? You can't do them while using flury. Any suggestions on advancment?

Also suggestions on traits. I can only have one because for Role-Playing reasons I have to have Birthmark.

GM told me I could take Glory of Old (+1 save vs Spells, Spell-like ability, and Posions) Is that getting just a little overboard? Is there something better?

I plan on Improved Init, Combat Reflexes, Cloud and Spider Step, and possibly Gtr Grapple. Then Improved Precise Shot @ 6th, Improved Crit @ 10th, and Pinpoint Targeting @ 14th. Haven't put a lot of thought into it though, kind of waiting until I get my hands on UC.

Enjoy your Archer, he'sgoing tobe a blast to play.

By the way, would the dwarven ability to move at the same speed while encumbered remove the penalty from the vow of chains from UM?

I've been trying out different dwarven monk builds after being told to get a backup ready for one of the campaigns... I think the zen archer will be very cool and useful to your party.

However, for an evil party (since there's an anti-paladin), a hungry ghost monk of the sacred mountain (maybe worships Droskar?) is a cool combo too.

Or an LE monk of the four winds that picks Aspect of the Oni at 17th level. Lots of cool options to choose from nowadays.

Have fun!
