Well it's about f#~$ing time.

Hmmmm . . . maybe I'll skip mowing the lawn this weekend.

Why The World Will End On May 21st

It's the anniversary of Noah's Flood:

A great deal of effort has been made by biblical literalists over the years to identify the exact chronology of the events dictated in the Old Testament.

Some scholars, including Camping, adhere to the theory that the Biblical Flood took place on May 21 in the year 4,990 B.C.

This is the first thread I have seen on this topic.

May 22. I don't think the world will be over. (I think The Book of Revelation was a metaphor heaped with Babylonian astrology that nobody can really grok because we don't understand, firsthand, the times it was written in). However,......in a weird other universe that is identical to this one except for the fact that indeed, the world IS going to end on May 21, do you think your identical twinner there is maximizing his life's output? And on May 22, if the metaphysical superheroes there won and somehow made the powers-that-be turn over the universe's hourglass....armageddon preempted for another age of man,......what should this identical twinner do that he/she/it isn't doing right right now?

Liberty's Edge

I don't think THE world will end May 21, 2011. Or 2012 whenever that Mayan calendar says.
However, there could be a tornado rip through my neighborhood. Or an automobile accident. OR I might have an aortic aneurysm that I don't know about decide to pop like a zit and gush my blood into my abdominal cavity and send me off to my dirtnap.
MY world might end at any time.

Personally, I am thinking about throwing an end-of-the-world party. The 21st is my birthday and I think being the Herald of the Apocalypse is just swell.

Y'know...

I hang around some pretty serious conservative Christians, and I gotta say, discussion about the date of the End Times is probably the least useful topic I've every heard.

It's the one piece of information that scripture tells us, up-front, we won't know. It's the one datum that Christ says is withheld even from Him.

It's unhelpful to speculate: what good does it do, if the Last Judgement is on the 21st, and you intend to put your life in order on the 20th, and you get hit by a bus and killed on the 18th?

Liberty's Edge

Because everybody dies, man. Not everybody lives.

We had at least one other. It is some seriously misreading of, well everything. And like Chris says why bother, You could get hit by a bus on the 18th.

What movie was that from?

f&*~, I don't know anymore.

Ferris Bueller? Or Braveheart? I get the two confused.

I use to be an end times biblical scholar. I've studied just about every biblical passage that even hints on end times and other biblical scholars of end times.

And my stance on this May 21st thing is "whatever."

Braveheart

Edit: Ninja'ed.

Liberty's Edge

I'm glad we had that MLK//Mark Twain misquote thing a week ago, because I've seen that "not everyone lives" thing quoted as the Dalai Lama in a few friends' facebook status.

Mildly heretical thought here, but imagine if judgement days happens, God is standing there and goes "No, you know what, no. Everybody come in, sinners and saints, we'll all sit down and talk about what we did wrong this time before I reincarnate everyone."

Can imagine all the religious sorts who use their faith as a pedestal for their own egos going "....................". (warning, contains swearing!)

Do they have internet in heaven? Will I still be able to play MMOs and would God be willing to let Gary Gygax be the GM in my game?

*snorts*

Just had the mental image of a Bhudda, God, Allah and Shiva sitting around a table while Gygax says "Roll for inniative." Dear lord I am heading for Hell, and I don't care.

Origen was right!

(my favorite heretic of all time too)

Also, Mayan descendants are really sick and tired of the 2012 crap the rest of the world around them has been fretting over. Their general attitude about the whole thing is "What the hell is wrong with those people?"

I 'liked' their Facebook page just so I could see what they say on May 23rd.

They promised me they will not delete the page if they are proven wrong. I hope that they follow through on that promise.

Camping's reading of scripture says that this rule only applied during the "Church Age," which ended somewhat recently. He has denounced organized religion and churches, which he says have been fully infiltrated by Satan.

So that's how he can pinpoint the day.

Ah so he is basically saying he is better than everyone else. As well as playing on the american dislike of anything organized, religion specifically.

I have lost count of the number of times the world is supposed to have ended in my lifetime. It used to freak me out as a kid... but then again I grew up during the cold war and I was also expecting to be nuked at any time.

I am so over it that when some nutter starts up with the end of the world crap I just laugh.

Grand Lodge

I will be rather upset if the world ends while I'm away from my wife. I would be forced to stop the apocalypse through sheer determination.

Silver Crusade

I'm still not entirely convinced time isn't just going to loop. Because that is exactly the kind of tricky @#$% He would pull.

;)

Grand Lodge

If you ever decide that your life is not too high a price to pay for saving the universe, let me know. We'll be ready.

Ah, he's invented the Blind Slit version of atheism/heresy with a side of Snobish A**hatery.

This guy probably thinks it works like the lottery. If you guess enough times it'll happen.

Joking aside I've heard of various splinter groups from christianity claiming that the world would end every so often. Best not to pay attention as this guy and his cult and clearly just trying to draw attention to themselves and grab more followers.

That should be just enough time to finish the [i]Honest Hearts[/i[ DLC...

On the off-chance this is actually true, going to go pump some more hours into Oblivion ...

I refuse to let this happen while I still half a season of Game of Thrones to see.

There. I have officially Forbid It. When we're all still here on the 22nd, you're welcome.

Given Time is caused by change in possibility at the Singularity, has it already happened? or do we need to make it happen to isolate all the trouble makers in a pocket reality? Close the loop on you and trap you on a mobius.

To this day, I still crack up every time I see this Jack Chick tract. For all the Rule 34 reasons. YES!

Is it wrong that I consider the Chick tracts less evil than Rob Liefield's "art"?

HalfOrcHeavyMetal wrote:

I thought that was SOP in Jack's World.

I see ads for this on the train all the time lately. I'm wondering what's going to happen if he's wrong.

I'm already on the case. Rest assured your Alton-/Whedon-hating ways can continue unabated.

Thank god. I was about to call my lawyer regarding what to do with all those unsold boxes of Haterade(tm).

And to think that there are Christians who say that atheists are immmoral. This guy is thinking about your poor Fluffy after you're gone.

I'm telling my paizo Parents on you -- This is a completely offensive comment.

I'm flagging you.

You're right. I apologize. I knew putting an extra "m" in the word "immoral" was going way too far.
