As another Librarian (albeit a Chaotic one), I wonder if there is a model for this based on boardgames in the library-- a reference copy for library events?

This particular incarnation of the rules will never be anything other than what it is—the books tie in to everything else in the box so strongly that they'd make little sense on their own.
That said, we do recognize the difference between an introductory box set and a simplified version of the rulebook, and one does not preclude the other in any way. But I will tell you that we're only doing the former this year.

What Vic says. We understand that the box format is not ideal for everyone (and that everyone interested in a "basic" version of the rules doesn't necessarily need dice, for example), but we're still working on how best to address this issue, and won't have anything formal to announce regarding it for a long time.

Thanks, Vic and Erik!
I started with the classic Red Box, so I'm definitely going to buy the box for myself (and, like Dale, for my nephew), but I hope you guys will eventually publish those "library-friendly" books as well. :)
Another option would be to buy the box for our collection, but catalogue and shelve only the books (as individual titles) so that our patrons might check out at least them. However, it's not a common practise over here; even other gamers in our staff feel boxed sets are not suitable for library collections. Of course, we might do as Jeff suggested; the boxed set as a reference copy for RPG events/club might work, but it would be even better to run a game that we actually have in our circulating collection.

It's gonna be interesting if the ruleset of the product is aimed as truly a light version of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core book (i.e., basically the first five levels, their associated abilities, equipment, monsters, magic items, etc. but enough to run a low-level campaign) or aimed specifically at newbies. The latter will not only require a different language, but a reworking of the rules so not to overwhelm the fledgling players and GMs. I would, for example, only provide details on the archetype races and classes (i.e., dwarves, elves, halflings, and humans; cleric, fighter, rogue, and wizard), all skills, and select feats and spells. Combat would be broken down in the simplest of terms -- especially AoO -- using CMB/CMD kinda as a "catchall" for all the various things PCs are liable to do.
Looking forward to purchasing the set.

I have a tactic for having the box set at a library ... how about having a librarian act as a GM to demo the product and carry the other books in the library's reference section? ;)

Hmmmm . . . . this is sounding more like an "Intro Set" than a "Basic Set." By that I mean everything needed to play in one box, but not necessarily a lighter or more basic version of the rules. Still, I hope that they make it less intimidating w/ limited classes, class options and feats, and maybe leaving out the combat maneuver stuff. We need to keep younger gamers coming into the hobby.

It may seem weird but a text-clearance for being punched and grouped in a ring-binder (not included in the box but std compatible) and a little cover-slip-page/mini-poster might do alot...

Well, a lot of feats and options etc. would be unnecessary for level reasons alone (look at the core feats - this alone will be quite a cut). The four base classes only could work, though. But Combat maneuver could be handled easy enough, imo.
I'm looking forward for this. Even though I'm probably have to wait for the german translation... damn you, nephew. Learn english already. ;)

I would not assume this to be true. There is a fair amount of assumption going on based on very limited info. I cannot, unfortunately, give any more at this time, but I can say that I do not think you will be disappointed.

Thanks for the reply, Jason, and no, I can't imagine I would be disappointed, regardless.

That is indeed one of the options I mentioned in my follow-up post; however, I'm not sure if my colleagues want RPGs in the reference stacks, so we'd probably have to restrict its use for staff members only (and especially so if we're going to use the box to showcase RPGs).

yes! I will definitely buy this product. I can't believe everyone finally gets it. It's time to INTRODUCE gamers to our beloved games. I hope, and I'm sure, that Pathfinder Basic will be like the ORIGINAL Red Box D&D and the recent Dragon Age, and not half-butt-cheeked version of the game, ala D&D Essentials Red Box... ugh, that set was pathetic.

It doesn't matter much to me. I'm getting two copies rain, mud, snow or blood. I can see how Paizo may not want to require RPG subscribers to buy a second, incomplete, version of the core rules, though.

Don't tell us yet! We'll have a specific thread asking RPG subscribers to tell us whether it should be part of the sub or not—but we won't be asking until after we actually tell you what's in the box!

Hmmmmm ... my plan to estimate the number of charter superscribers is almost complete ... :)

Not saying Pazio is at this point but sometimes things like this could be close to break even.
Where they profit is from people buying more products from getting interested.
The age old saying "it takes money to make money". Meaning an investment now can produce tremendous results later on. Hopefully!

A relevant question is if the printed contents of the box will have PDF copies, and will these PDF copies be for sale separately, and also will they come free to those who have it as part of their subscription or a special one-time pre-order.

All good questions. For now, we're still busy refining the box, and we haven't spent much time thinking about those things yet.

It is doable, as Catalyst just put out their new Runner's Toolkit boxed set for Shadowrun in both physical and pdf versions.

Our goals for our basic set are unlikely to be all that similar to their goals for Runner's Toolkit. We will consider it deeply before we decide anything. (And we probably won't make a decision on that until after PaizoCon.)

I know cardboard pieces fit in a box better and cost less, but will there be a "set" of minis to match available separately as minis do add to the first impression of the game?
