I know a great way to build effigies taught to me by pacific islanders. They stomped and beat that thing all night before setting it on fire, using a technique I'd never seen before. And they did it all in my honor! What amazing folks they are, even after I stole a bunch of their crops to survive.

Probably not, though, unless you can wave a magic wand and make it universally understood that making light of rape In the physical presence of a survivor is just bad form.

Yeah, I just sent off the "hey, dude, that wasn't cool and here's why" email. Past experience confronting these kinds of situations is a big part of my current anxiety. It almost never goes over well.

*sigh* it never ceases to amaze me.

It's this simple.

There's women playing.

It doesn't exist.

It's that easy.

I notice how the rules don't make allowances for such realistic eventualities as losing male reproductive organs to a really nasty axewound. Gored by a minotaur? I don't see a "Bigby's plastic testicle" spell anywhere. Now.......
taking that a step further,......
if you were in the room with somebody who had actually suffered such an event,
I doubt you'd talk about it unless you wanted to be their enemy.

Silver Crusade

Sincere condolences. You're handling it with far more grace than most of us could muster, I'd wager.

Some people... >:(

edit-No matter what, don't let the douchebag or his drama make you feel bad about calling him out.

That would be the sensible approach, and the way this group operated before this player joined. I hope this was an aberration and that we can go back to that mode next time. Assuming, of course, that this doesn't blow up in my face.

Oh, and lesson to the youngsters:
when the dungeonmaster's wife is playing,
uuuuh.....you don't have to have your lawful neutral dwarf kill all the recently defeated tribes' orc females and children. Just....let it go.

You learn these things by crashing your durn fool head into hard objects. One way or da otha.

I should start a column: "stupid crap I did that you don't have to do just learn from me and don't be a goof."

Thanks. I've had more practice at this than anyone should have to have. (which is any, really.) But as anxious as I get about the confrontation, I'm pretty much immune to feeling ashamed or awkward about telling people they've crossed that line these days.

Sounds like either the guy is a complete douche scumbag, and probably won’t react well to being called on it, or he was just insensitive and clueless and might, with any luck, be horribly embarrassed and apologetic about making light of a subject which is anything but, no matter who is present. Hope it turns out to be the latter Lindisty.

He's actually someone I've liked and respected since college, though we've only recently reconnected after *mumblety* years. I hope it turns out to be the latter, too, for the sake of old friendships, if nothing else.

Liberty's Edge

I was in a situation recently where someone made a rather inappropriate remark about this very subject. Now, this guy is generally a nice fellow (a bit crude at times) and has a wife and teenage daughters; I was quite surprised at the remark. It wasn’t graphic, or about anyone in particular (or even anyone in general) but it did very much make light of the topic. Had the guy not been a valued client, two decades my senior and from a different cultural background I probably would have voiced that I didn’t think the comment was appropriate ... maybe I should have anyway, considering that I still wonder if I should have a week later.

I can't speculate about what would have been the right thing for you to do in that circumstance. Not my place to judge.

But if it makes any difference to you in potential future situations, I'll say that I always appreciate it when men call other men out on that kind of behavior. I'm willing to do it, but with the kind of person who's going to do that, a man's disapproval means more than mine would, and I see nothing wrong with bringing the most effective social pressure to bear in those circumstances.

Not weird: The ending is satisfying, if not revelatory.
Awesome: The ending is revelatory in some way.

And this list.

Dear god...Here's hoping it's the latter. I have all male groups, all female groups and mixed groups, and the one time something like this came up recently, one of the females around the table quickly informed the person making the comment that it was not welcome. He apologized, stated he was trying out an evil character for the first time and didn't mean to offend anyone. We then moved on. We've all been friends for years, so it was relatively easy to smooth things over. Chances are it was a stupid insensitive comment that the person didn't mean, especially since you've known him for years. I don't think it will blow up in your face.

Silver Crusade

Morning, all. What did I miss?

What? People want me to write my lists out? Oh, man. I remember Fruit Baskets fit into the "So Weird of an Ending I was Pissed" category. One thing I've noticed about several of these, is they start out strong, lose steam over the course of the series, and I've wondered if a super weird twist is all they feel they can do to try to revive things at the end. Doesn't work.

So. Much. Stress.

I have a big book of the collected works of William Blake. It'd be more impressive if it were leather bound, though.
