So I finally got around to watching the entire Star Wars original Trilogy. Totally underwhelmed. Poor story and horrible script, ok effects for the time, and I`m totally mystified as to why it was so popular. I guess I`m just not a good geek.

And I don`t like Star Trek either :P I think William Shatner couldn`t act his way out of a paper bag.
He kept forgetting his lines, hence all the pausing. But I digress. There are gems in the rough in Star Trek that still stand the test of time despite the acting sets and well just horrible other things. City on the edge of forever being a classic.

WOOT!!! Great start of the day opened up the mail today, saw a letter addressed to me from National Science & Engineering Research Council. First lines of the letter:
"NSERC wishes to inform you that your application for a doctoral fellowship was approved based on your research potential, and communication, interpersonal and leadership abilities. To this end you have been approved for $80 000 over a 24 month duration.

The original trilogy has been permanent etched into many a geek's brain as the "end-all-be-all" for movies and it just ain't. Is it an excellent popcorn movie? Yes. Will it always fill me with giddy memories and nostalgia? Yes. Was it cheated out of the Best Picture Oscar for 1978? HELL NO. (And if any of you can honestly tell me that the movie had a better script, direction and acting than any of the other nominees-Annie Hall [winner], The Goodbye Girl, Julia or Turning Point-then you are lying to yourselves).
I find it amazing how we (as geeks/nerds) can sit around and complain about Peter Parker's organic web shooters in Spider-Man, yet gloss over a LOT of the bad dialogue and such in the original trilogy.
That said, I still own multiple copies of the movies and will be first in line for the 3D re-re-re-releases. :P

Morning, all. What did I miss?
Well, Jeremy, Justin, C.R., and Ashe accidently stumbled into an annual Star Wars convention wearing their I Hate Star Wars shirts, thus instigating a riot that turned the downtown into a chaos-filled warzone. Meanwhile, Nathan received some friendly advice on steering clear of bad influences, causing him to cancel his weekend ski trip to upstate New York with James Jacobs. And, across town, Gary and Sara were concerned when, after their wild night on the town, they awoke to discover their bathroom filled with mutliple containers of baked.....No, wait! That's my soap opera.
I think Star Wars is considered more high camp than high cinema.
Properties like Star Wars and Star Trek are hard for some to stomach today because they are taken out of context for the times, and haven't necessarily aged well. But Star Trek was sold to the networks as Wagon Train in space, and managed to be so much more in a time where space exploration was still a dream. Star Wars was a tribute to the adventure flicks of the past. It, too, outstripped its intent. Are they great works on the Absolute Scale of Art? Not really. But they sure struck chords with a lot of people at the time, which is more than a lot of higher-quality work can say.
