Ugh. I may have a different explanation for your steep hotel rates, Freehold: Your ZIP Code.

EDIT: Or perhaps you violated their dress code?

No, that graduation was in my neck of the woods. Unfortunately, even though we were in the same town at the same time it just didn't work out to meet up.

It's where you're flying from that matters -- the booking agencies have been "caught" jacking up prices for people from more "affluent" areas such as San Francisco. So if you and Freehold stayed at the same place it'd be interesting for you to compare prices. The exposé was on sites such as Booking.com cranking up their rates for people booking out of San Francisco, but I'm sure they do similar things to New Yorkers.

And here I was pissed just because I got a call about a server being down at 2:03am. It rebooted for updates at 1:20, and the system detected it up by 2:05. Which means it was already up for about 5 minutes before they called me.

Does it help or make it worse if I say they're the same kid?

Misunderstood. Thought we were talking about hotels still. No, it was definitely easy driving distance for me. gran may have unknowingly met Freehold though.

It's hotels. If I book a hotel through Booking.com from an IP address in the Bay Area, I'll pay more for the exact same room on the exact same date as you would through Booking.com from an IP address in Illinois.

They're tracking IP addresses and charging higher rates to people from more affluent areas. Variable hotel rates to the extreme. Since Freehold's in the New York area, I'm sure his IP address would qualify him for higher rates.

Just further proof that a VPN subscription is going to be more and more necessary, one might say mandatory, going forward.

At least, until some business gets the bright idea that doing so is "presenting the consumer fraudulently" and lobbies to have it banned.

Personally, I find it entertaining that my corporate VPN goes through Phoenix, of all places, which the article lists as consistently getting the lowest prices. So from now on *if* we use one of those sites we'll apparently be booking our trips on my corporate laptop while connected to corporate VPN. A wee bit of ridiculous there.

A university lecturer threw chalkboard eraser at me. I questioned her choice of cake to represent cake ideal when discussing platonic philosophy.

Lol, when he went to a Jesuit high school (as a mouthy, know-it-all Protestant), WW had not only chalk thrown at him, but on the odd occasion, shoes, and once a Bible.

NH can attest that it can be very, very difficult at times to NOT hurl random objects at WW, and yes, parochial school teachers have more license to do such things than public school teachers do, but still...

That's kinda the boat we're in as well. Trying to save money, or at least cut down on spending and bills, in preparation for [REDACTED].

We're down to YouTube Premium and Nebula now. I do keep being tempted to try CuriosityStream, but ... yeah just not a good time for it at the moment.

I have youtube premium, netflix, and crunchyroll. I rarely watch Netflix anymore, but do from time to time. Crunchyroll I keep planning to watch something, but can't choose what to start. Although, I did just finish my 3rd watch through of Frieren on Saturday.

I had Macross 2 on VHS once upon a time. Pretty sure I got rid of it once I no longer had a VCR. I still have my copies of Macross Plus on DVD, both the 4 part series and the movie version.

Ah. I didn't know that. I tried the free tier for a week or two way back when, but the ads were too annoying, so I started paying.

Ads are an interesting area for me:
Netflix: We're introducing ads. You can continue paying what you are now and stay ad-free, or you can pay less and accept ads. We kept NetFlix.

Disney Plus: We're introducing ads. You can continue paying what you are now and get ads, or you can pay more to go ad-free. We dropped Disney Plus, even though its ad-free tier was still cheaper than Netflix.

Amazon Prime: We're introducing ads. You can continue paying what you are now and get ads, or you can pay more to go ad-free. We stopped watching Amazon Prime (can't exactly unsubscribe because it's part of the overall Amazon Prime membership and you can't split out what you want or don't want. And yes, I checked). Though we are now looking into whether we can cancel Amazon entirely, so they managed to make their video services so untenable that if we drop free delivery, we'll drop video in a heartbeat.

In all cases, it was, "We're forcing ads on you unless you pay more," vs., "You can have a discount if you accept ads." I find the former extortion, and the latter reasonable.

Homeschooling sucks.

As far as streaming services I can't live without Spotify and I guess Hulu. And then we also have Netflix, Disney+, Peacock, and Paramount+.

Spotify is good for older stuff (as is Youtube - maybe better), but Bandcamp is where I look for new music.

That's what you get when you let the crack ranchers... ranch... crack... DAMMIT! I thought I was going to be able to come up with a joke by the end of that sentence. Winter's got me off my game. So dark. So cold.

I wish I paid better attention to Bandcamp than I do. I've found so much good stuff there, downloaded it, occasionally still listen to the MP3s, but have forgotten to ever go back and look for more/newer.

Limeylongears wrote:

I might have subscribed to MoonJune Records to get all of their releases...Soft Machine, Tony Levin, Markus Reuter, Wingfield, Gary Husband, a bunch of obscure jazz fusion groups ranging from Italy to Indonesia...good stuff.

Hulu is down.

I'm so far down the independent music rabbit hole on Spotify I only get obscure band recommendations for new music.
