And for the record:
(1) Mom had her first stroke at 91. Being a "grizzly woman", it only affected her physical mobility, not her mental capacity. The day after the stroke the physical therapist walked in, took one look at her determinedly doing every rehabilitation exercise obsessively, and said, "She'll be fine."Sure enough, Impus Major visited her over the holiday weekend and said that she's back to walking a mile a day. She needs a walker, but she's determined to get back up to two milse a day.
(2) GothBard starts her new job today!!
193 days of unemployment heck. At $450/week for unemployment with a $10,000 max, she drained her unemployment fund to $150.
Nice timing, but considering unemployment is less than minimum wage, she'd've rather have had a job.
Woohoo for GothBard! Cookies for everyFaWtL!

It's been just under 3 years since COVID turned our corporate meetings into remote online Zoom sessions. Three. Years.
So, how is it that we STILL have people who join meetings then fail to mute themselves while they wander off and do something else?
This morning's tirade brought to you by a team meeting of only 8 people, one of whom started a call with a family member during the team meeting, not muting themselves, and completely disrupting the meeting.

The world of taxes is truly bizarre:
(1) I was complaining to Shiro that unless you withhold extra money, you always end up owing. Shiro pointed me to the pertinent tax law: If you fail to pay your taxes, the maximum penalty is a percentage of what you owe. So if they properly withheld the correct amount, you wouldn't have to file taxes.
(2) Somehow, in spite of GothBard being laid off, we made more money last year. I'm sure it was the generous severance plus two months of medical coverage. (Apparently our medical plan at her company was a $3000/month plan. No wonder it was so good.)
(3) In spite of the extra income, they taxed GothBard's severance at the "full rate" (don't ask me where this comes from), so we're getting decent refunds from both the state and the feds this year.
In short, I'm a Ph.D. in mathematics and taxes make no sense to me.
Mathematics has logic as a prerequisite...

Whereas we will be paying for the first time in 12 years. WW's job puts us in a different bracket than before, but we own no property and can't claim more than the standard deduction.
We're paying all the taxes and insurance on Daisy's house, but through her, because everything is still in her name, so we pay the money and she gets the deductions. Which stinks. When we finally put the solar panels on the roof (probably this year), it's going to be the same story.

I always ask to be taxed as heavily as possible.

What's it like living with kids?
Last night we had an extremely rare (once per 10 years or so) lightning, hail, and thunderstorm here. The hailstones hitting the corrugated plastic roofing on the garage woke me up, the flashes of lightning were so bright that they lit up the room in spite of the light-blocking curtains, and the thunder was powerful enough to set off car alarms.
How did the cats react to this?
They both slept comfortably through it, completely accustomed to random loud bangs, flashes of light, and shaking around the house. They live with teenagers.

The smallest Purrbarian Brother, Squeaker, has injured his leg, poor chap (nothing serious, we think - just a sprain got while Gallivanting About). He's presently snoozing behind me at the moment on what's usually my computer chair, wrapped in a sleeping bag, and will be checked out more thoroughly by the vet tomorrow.

More seriously, it was pretty cool in that we got a rare storm where the snow level dropped to just over 1000' (330m), so as I was driving along the highway today I got to gaze in wonder at the snow-capped foothills, and this morning mother-in-law had patches of hailstones on her steps. But when the kids were in the 6-9 range we got a solid 3" of hail one night, so it's not a "once in a generation" storm or anything.
I was surprised that it was L.A.'s first blizzard warning since '89. They get snow in the Grapevine every 2-3 years. I think this was just unusual because we got enough snow to stick for more than a day. (8-12", or 20-30 cm, as opposed to a more typical 1-3", or 2.5-7.5 cm.)

I thought it was that wind. Light rail service in San Jose and Campbell got knocked out for a while. Bunch of trees got uprooted.

A quick paraphrase of a conversation we had at game on Friday:
Players: "Why are all the NPCs we meet a!@~$#@s?"
GM: "Two reasons. First off, they aren't necessarily a#%%#*&s, they just aren't treating you as special. After all, you're random strangers who just walked into town and are demanding that people spill all their secrets to you. That's likely to be met with hostility. Secondly, your GM is an a!!+%."
Yes, I am the GM in this scenario.

There was also a fun moment when the Inquisitor tried to Intimidate an NPC drill sergeant.
NPC: "Who the f!~@ are you?"
Inquisitor: "I'm an Inquisitor of Pharasma! That's who the f~!* I am! You really wanna push me?" *rolls a 2, for a total of 4 on his check*
NPC: *rolls a 27 CMB, pushing him back 5'* "Yeah, I do!"
Inquisitor: *turns around and walks away in shame*

I have finished Titansfall 2.
It was a fun ride. Very good first person shooter, with excellent pacing, good combat, and lovely companion. I want my own BT now.
The game handled first person platforming much better than the new Doom and the combat wasn't as insane.
The bad thing is that the single player campaign is terribly short - I was done in 7.1 hour. Some people apparently went through it even faster.
Besides the short campaign, the weapon selection was a minor issue - while the game has quite a number of weapons, the difference between many of them are marginal, often you wouldn't even notice which of multiple rifles you are actually using, simply throwing at enemy whatever you have at the moment. The precision/sniper rifles were nice at least.
It could also use some xp and skill system to represent the main character's development during the game.

I agree with all of these points, it's also super fun in multiplayer. Or at least it used to be.

I have now learnt the true meaning of old age. This evening, as I lay basking in the dying sunlight on my veranda, my beloved wife, who had been engaged in some domestic maintenance, came to me and said "Dear, what I truly need right now is a really long screw". And I, without a second thought, immediately roused from my chaise lounge and headed out to the shed to look for one.

Really weird phenomenon going on around here since roughly mid-January: A manyfold increase in the number of cars parked facing the wrong way on the local streets.
It used to be unusual enough that you might see it once or twice a month. In the last few weeks we've seen more than two dozen cars parked facing the wrong way, all over Albany.
It's just... weird...

Mayhaps you have an influx of people from Dubuque, Iowa. Those people absolutely hate parking on the correct side of the street.

Also weird: I've been seeing ton of vehicles with California license plates in Iowa, starting about mid-summer last year.
